The Hipparcos Transit Data: What, why and how?
The Hipparcos Transit Data are a collection of partially reduced, fully
calibrated observations of (mostly) double and multiple stars obtained with the
ESA Hipparcos astrometry satellite. The data are publicly available, as part of
the CD-ROM set distributed with the Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues (ESA
SP--1200, 1997), for about a third of the Hipparcos Catalogue entries including
all confirmed or suspected non-single stars. The Transit Data consist of signal
modulation parameters derived from the individual transits of the targets
across the Hipparcos focal grid. The Transit Data permit re-reduction of the
satellite data for individual objects, using arbitrarily complex object models
in which time-variable photometric as well as geometric characteristics may be
taken into account. We describe the structure and contents of the Transit Data
files and give examples of how the data can be used. Some of the applications
use standard astronomical software: Difmap or AIPS for aperture synthesis
imaging, and GaussFit for detailed model fitting. Fortran code converting the
data into formats suitable for these application programs has been made public

Perturbation theory and the two-level approximation:A corollary and critique
This analysis addresses the use of a two-level approximation to simplify expressions derived from perturbation theory. It is shown that the limitations of validity for the emergent results are more stringent than is commonly understood, being equivalent in effect to the adoption of a more extensive approximation - one that significantly undermines the perturbative origin of those expressions. Effectively truncating the completeness relation, a series of interconnected operator relations comes into play, some with physically untenable consequences. A new theorem on the expectation values of operator functions highlights additional constraints upon any molecule modelled as a two-level system. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Peanut ball for decreasing length of labor: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
INTRODUCTION:
Prolonged length of labor is associated with increased maternal and neonatal complications. Therefore, great attention has been given to interventions aimed at reducing the length of labor. One such intervention is the peanut ball, a large elongated exercise ball placed between a woman's legs during labor.
OBJECTIVE:
The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was to assess the effect of the use of peanut ball in reducing length of labor.
STUDY DESIGN:
Data sources: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Sciences, Scopus, ClinicalTrial.gov, OVID and Cochrane Library were searched from inception until January 2019.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Selection criteria included RCTs of laboring women with singleton gestations in cephalic presentation at term (≥37weeks) who were randomized to either use of peanut ball or control group (no peanut ball).
DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS:
Four trials with 648 nulliparous and multiparous women in spontaneous or induced labor were identified and included. 330 women were randomized to the intervention (peanut ball between the knees during labor) and 318 women to the control. Summary measures were reported as mean difference (MD) with 95% of confidence interval (CI) using the random effects model of DerSimonian and Laird. The primary outcome was total length of labor. PROSPERO Registration Number: CRD42018082438 RESULTS: Total length of labor was 79min shorter in the peanut ball group, but this was not significant (MD -79.1 min, 95% CI -204.9, 46.7). Peanut ball use showed trends toward higher incidence of spontaneous vaginal deliveries (RR 1.1, 95% CI 1.0, 1.2) and lower incidence of cesarean deliveries (RR 0.8, 95% CI 0.6, 1.0).
CONCLUSIONS:
Peanut ball use was not associated with a significant decrease in total length of labor. Since there were trends toward reductions in length of labor, an increased incidence in spontaneous vaginal deliveries, and lower incidence of cesarean deliveries, more research is needed
The Primordial Binary Population - I: A near-infrared adaptive optics search for close visual companions to A star members of Scorpius OB2
We present the results of a near-infrared adaptive optics survey with the aim
to detect close companions to Hipparcos members in the three subgroups of the
nearby OB association Sco OB2: Upper Scorpius (US), Upper Centaurus Lupus (UCL)
and Lower Centaurus Crux (LCC). We have targeted 199 A-type and late B-type
stars in the Ks band, and a subset also in the J and H band. We find 151
stellar components other than the target stars. A brightness criterion is used
to separate these components into 77 background stars and 74 candidate physical
companion stars. Out of these 74 candidate companions, 41 have not been
reported before (14 in US; 13 in UCL; 14 in LCC). Companion star masses range
from 0.1 to 3 Msun. The mass ratio distribution follows f(q) = q^-0.33, which
excludes random pairing. No close (rho < 3.75'') companion stars or background
stars are found in the magnitude range 12 < Ks < 14. The lack of stars with
these properties cannot be explained by low-number statistics, and may imply a
lower limit on the companion mass of ~ 0.1 Msun. Close stellar components with
Ks > 14 are observed. If these components are very low-mass companion stars, a
gap in the companion mass distribution might be present. The small number of
close low-mass companion stars could support the embryo-ejection formation
scenario for brown dwarfs. Our findings are compared with and complementary to
visual, spectroscopic, and astrometric data on binarity in Sco OB2. We find an
overall companion star fraction of 0.52 in this association. This paper is the
first step toward our goal to derive the primordial binary population in Sco

GMOs: Non-Health Issues
The controversy over genetically modified [GM] organisms is often framed in terms of possible hazards for human health. Articles in a previous volume of this *Encyclopedia* give a general overview of GM crops [@Mulvaney2014] and specifically examine human health [@Nordgard2014] and labeling [@Bruton2014] issues surrounding GM organisms. This article explores several other aspects of the controversy: environmental concerns, political and legal disputes, and the aim of "feeding the world" and promoting food security. Rather than discussing abstract, hypothetical GM organisms, this article explores the consequences of the GM organisms that have actually been deployed in the particular contexts that they have been deployed, on the belief that there is little point in discussing GM organisms in an idealized or context-independent way
Fluid release from the subducted Cocos plate and partial melting of the crust deduced from magnetotelluric studies in southern Mexico: implications for the generation of volcanism and subduction dynamics
In order to study electrical conductivity phenomena that are associated with subduction related fluid release and melt production, magnetotelluric (MT) measurements were carried out in southern Mexico along two coast to coast profiles. The conductivity-depth distribution was obtained by simultaneous two-dimensional inversion of the transverse magnetic and transverse electric modes of the magnetotelluric transfer functions. The MT models demonstrate that the plate southern profile shows enhanced conductivity in the deep crust. The northern profile is dominated by an elongated conductive zone extending >250 km below the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB). The isolated conductivity anomalies in the southern profile are interpreted as slab fluids stored in the overlying deep continental crust. These fluids were released by progressive metamorphic dehydration of the basaltic oceanic crust. The conductivity anomalies may be related to the main dehydration reactions at the zeolite → blueschist → eclogite facies transitions and the breakdown of chlorite. This relation allows the estimation of a geothermal gradient of ∼8.5°C/km for the top of the subducting plate. The same dehydration reactions may be recognized along the northern profile at the same position relative to the depth of the plate, but more inland due to a shallower dip, and merge near the volcanic front due to steep downbending of the plate. When the oceanic crust reaches a depth of 80–90 km, ascending fluids produce basaltic melts in the intervening hot subcontinental mantle wedge that give rise to the volcanic belt. Water-rich basalts may intrude into the lower continental crust leading to partial melting. The elongated highly conductive zone below the TMVB may therefore be caused by partial melts and fluids of various origins, ongoing migmatization, ascending basaltic and granitic melts, growing plutons as well as residual metamorphic fluids. Zones of extremely high conductance (>8000 S) in the continental crust on either MT profile might indicate extinct magmatism
Effect of an exercise training intervention with resistance bands on blood cell counts during chemotherapy for lung cancer: a pilot randomized controlled trial
PURPOSE: Chemotherapy for lung cancer can have a detrimental effect on white blood cell (WBC) and red blood cell (RBC) counts. Physical exercise may have a role in improving WBCs and RBCs, although few studies have examined cancer patients receiving adjuvant therapies. The purpose of this pilot trial was to examine the effects of an exercise intervention utilizing resistance bands on WBCs and RBCs in lung cancer patients receiving curative intent chemotherapy. METHODS: A sample of lung cancer patients scheduled for curative intent chemotherapy was randomly assigned to the exercise intervention (EX) condition or usual care (UC) condition. The EX condition participated in a three times weekly exercise program using resistance bands for the duration of chemotherapy. RESULTS: A total of 14 lung cancer patients completed the trial. EX condition participants completed 79% of planned exercise sessions. The EX condition was able to maintain WBCs over the course of the intervention compared to declines in the UC condition (p = .008; d = 1.68). There were no significant differences in change scores in RBCs. CONCLUSIONS: Exercise with resistance bands may help attenuate declines in WBCs in lung cancer patients receiving curative intent chemotherapy. Larger trials are warranted to validate these findings. Ultimately these findings could be informative for the development of supportive care strategies for lung cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Hydrothermal circulation at the Cleft-Vance overlapping spreading center : results of a magnetometric resistivity survey
We report on a magnetometric resistivity sounding carried out in the overlapping spreading center between the Cleft and Vance segments of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. The data collected reveal a strong three dimensionality in the crustal electrical resistivity structure on wavelengths of a few kilometers. Areas of reduced crustal electrical resistivities, with values approaching that of seawater, are seen beneath the neovolcanic zones of both active spreading centers. We interpret these reduced resistivities as evidence of active hydrothermal circulation within the uppermost 1 km of hot, young oceanic crust
Informing Management of Henrys Lake, Idaho, using an Integrated Catch-at-Age Model
Henrys Lake, Idaho, supports a popular fishery for Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii bouvieri and Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout × Rainbow Trout O. mykiss hybrids. A majority of the adult population of fish in Henrys Lake are of hatchery origin that were stocked as fingerlings. The fishery is closed to angling during the late winter and spring months, but fisheries managers are considering opening the fishery year-round with catch-and-release- only regulations or with a two-fish bag limit during the extended season. However, there is concern that the proposed management actions may negatively affect the current fishery. Therefore, we developed an integrated catch-atage model to estimate population parameters for trout in Henrys Lake and used a simulation model to evaluate alternative management actions. Results of this study suggest that catch and release of both Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout and hybrids would increase and that abundance of trout in the spring (i.e., the start of the traditional season) would decrease under both proposed bag limits. Losses in abundance can be mitigated by stocking additional fish as long as no more than approximately 1,520,000 Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout are stocked annually. If catch-and-release-only regulations are implemented during the newly proposed season, total harvest is expected to decrease compared to the current fishery due to additional catch-and-release mortality. Ultimately, managers will need to prioritize harvest or catch-and-release opportunity, both of which provide additional utility to anglers, when choosing how to proceed with bag limit regulations
