Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy in 3D electrospun nanofiber mats coated with gold nanorods
Nanofibers functionalized by metal nanostructures and particles are exploited
as effective flexible substrates for SERS analysis. Their complex
three-dimensional structure may provide Raman signals enhanced by orders of
magnitude compared to untextured surfaces. Understanding the origin of such
improved performances is therefore very important for pushing nanofiber-based
analytical technologies to their upper limit. Here we report on polymer
nanofiber mats which can be exploited as substrates for enhancing the Raman
spectra of adsorbed probe molecules. The increased surface area and the
scattering of light in the nanofibrous system are individually analyzed as
mechanisms to enhance Raman scattering. The deposition of gold nanorods on the
fibers further amplifies Raman signals due to SERS. This study suggests that
Raman signals can be finely tuned in intensity and effectively enhanced in
nanofiber mats and arrays by properly tailoring the architecture, composition,

Association between Resistin Levels and All-Cause and Cardiovascular Mortality: A New Study and a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
CONTEXT: Studies concerning the association between circulating resistin and mortality risk have reported, so far, conflicting results.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between resistin and both all-cause and cardiovascular (CV) mortality risk by 1) analyzing data from the Gargano Heart Study (GHS) prospective design (n=359 patients; 81 and 58 all-cause and CV deaths, respectively); 2) performing meta-analyses of all published studies addressing the above mentioned associations.
DATA SOURCE AND STUDY SELECTION: MEDLINE and Web of Science search of studies reporting hazard ratios (HR) of circulating resistin for all-cause or CV mortality.
DATA EXTRACTION: Performed independently by two investigators, using a standardized data extraction sheet.
DATA SYNTHESIS: In GHS, adjusted HRs per one standard deviation (SD) increment in resistin concentration were 1.28 (95% CI: 1.07-1.54) and 1.32 (95% CI: 1.06-1.64) for all-cause and CV mortality, respectively. The meta-analyses included 7 studies (n=4016; 961 events) for all-cause mortality and 6 studies (n=4,187: 412 events) for CV mortality. Pooled HRs per one SD increment in resistin levels were 1.21 (95% CI: 1.03-1.42, Q-test p for heterogeneity<0.001) and 1.05 (95% CI: 1.01-1.10, Q-test p for heterogeneity=0.199) for all-cause and CV mortality, respectively. At meta-regression analyses, study mean age explained 9.9% of all-cause mortality studies heterogeneity. After adjusting for age, HR for all-cause mortality was 1.24 (95% CI: 1.06-1.45).
CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide evidence for an association between circulating resistin and mortality risk among high-risk patients as are those with diabetes and coronary artery disease
A prototype large-angle photon veto detector for the P326 experiment at CERN
The P326 experiment at the CERN SPS has been proposed with the purpose of
measuring the branching ratio for the decay K^+ \to \pi^+ \nu \bar{\nu} to
within 10%. The photon veto system must provide a rejection factor of 10^8 for
\pi^0 decays. We have explored two designs for the large-angle veto detectors,
one based on scintillating tiles and the other using scintillating fibers. We
have constructed a prototype module based on the fiber solution and evaluated
its performance using low-energy electron beams from the Frascati Beam-Test
Facility. For comparison, we have also tested a tile prototype constructed for
the CKM experiment, as well as lead-glass modules from the OPAL electromagnetic
barrel calorimeter. We present results on the linearity, energy resolution, and
time resolution obtained with the fiber prototype, and compare the detection

Regularity of higher codimension area minimizing integral currents
This lecture notes are an expanded version of the course given at the
ERC-School on Geometric Measure Theory and Real Analysis, held in Pisa,
September 30th - October 30th 2013. The lectures aim to explain the main steps
of a new proof of the partial regularity of area minimizing integer rectifiable
currents in higher codimension, due originally to F. Almgren, which is
contained in a series of papers in collaboration with C. De Lellis (University

The quiet Sun average Doppler shift of coronal lines up to 2 MK
The average Doppler shift shown by spectral lines formed from the
chromosphere to the corona reveals important information on the mass and energy
balance of the solar atmosphere, providing an important observational
constraint to any models of the solar corona. Previous spectroscopic
observations of vacuum ultra-violet (VUV) lines have revealed a persistent
average wavelength shift of lines formed at temperatures up to 1 MK. At higher
temperatures, the behaviour is still essentially unknown. Here we analyse
combined SUMER/SoHO and EIS/Hinode observations of the quiet Sun around disk
centre to determine, for the first time, the average Doppler shift of several
spectral lines formed between 1 and 2 MK, where the largest part of the quiet
coronal emission is formed. The measurements are based on a novel technique
applied to EIS spectra to measure the difference in Doppler shift between lines
formed at different temperatures. Simultaneous wavelength-calibrated SUMER
spectra allow establishing the absolute value at the reference temperature of 1
MK. The average line shifts at 1 MK < T < 1.8 MK are modestly, but clearly
bluer than those observed at 1 MK. By accepting an average blue shift of about
(-1.8+/-0.6) km/s at 1 MK (as provided by SUMER measurements), this translates
into a maximum Doppler shift of (-4.4+/-2.2) km/s around 1.8 MK. The measured
value appears to decrease to about (-1.3+/-2.6) km/s at the Fe XV formation
temperature of 2.1 MK. The measured average Doppler shift between 0.01 and 2.1
MK, for which we provide a parametrisation, appears to be qualitatively and
roughly quantitatively consistent with what foreseen by 3-D coronal models
where heating is produced by dissipation of currents induced by photospheric

Search for photospheric footpoints of quiet Sun transition region loops
CONTEXT:The footpoints of quiet Sun Transition Region (TR) loops do not seem
to coincide with the photospheric magnetic structures appearing in traditional
low-sensitivity magnetograms.
AIMS: To look for the so-far unidentified photospheric footpoints of TR loops
using G-band bright points (BPs) as proxies for photospheric magnetic field
concentrations.
METHODS: Comparison of TR measurements with SoHO/SUMER and photospheric
magnetic field observations obtained with the Dutch Open Telescope.
RESULTS: Photospheric BPs are associated with bright TR structures, but they
seem to avoid the brightest parts of the structure. BPs appear in regions that
are globally redshifted, but they avoid extreme velocities. TR explosive events
are not clearly associated with BPs.
CONCLUSIONS: The observations are not inconsistent with the BPs being
footpoints of TR loops, although we have not succeeded to uniquely identify

Comparing extrapolations of the coronal magnetic field structure at 2.5 solar radii with multi-viewpoint coronagraphic observations
The magnetic field shapes the structure of the solar corona but we still know
little about the interrelationships between the coronal magnetic field
configurations and the resulting quasi-stationary structures observed in
coronagraphic images (as streamers, plumes, coronal holes). One way to obtain
information on the large-scale structure of the coronal magnetic field is to
extrapolate it from photospheric data and compare the results with
coronagraphic images. Our aim is to verify if this comparison can be a fast
method to check systematically the reliability of the many methods available to
reconstruct the coronal magnetic field. Coronal fields are usually extrapolated
from photospheric measurements typically in a region close to the central
meridian on the solar disk and then compared with coronagraphic images at the
limbs, acquired at least 7 days before or after to account for solar rotation,
implicitly assuming that no significant changes occurred in the corona during
that period. In this work, we combine images from three coronagraphs
(SOHO/LASCO-C2 and the two STEREO/SECCHI-COR1) observing the Sun from different
viewing angles to build Carrington maps covering the entire corona to reduce
the effect of temporal evolution to ~ 5 days. We then compare the position of
the observed streamers in these Carrington maps with that of the neutral lines
obtained from four different magnetic field extrapolations, to evaluate the
performances of the latter in the solar corona. Our results show that the
location of coronal streamers can provide important indications to discriminate

Determination of CP and CPT violation parameters in the neutral kaon system using the Bell-Steinberger relation and data from the KLOE experiment
We present an improved determination of the CP and CPT violation parameters
Re(epsilon) and Im(delta) based on the unitarity condition (Bell-Steinberger
relation) and on recent results from the KLOE experiment. We find Re(epsilon) =
(159.6 \pm 1.3)10^-5 and Im(delta) = (0.4 \pm 2.1)10^-5, consistent with no CPT

Measurement of the branching fraction for the decay KS --> pi e nu
We present a measurement of the branching ratio BR(KS --> pi e nu) performed
using the KLOE detector. KS mesons are produced in the reaction e+ e- --> phi
--> KS KL at the DAFNE collider. In a sample of about 5 million KS-tagged
events we find 624 +- 30 semileptonic KS decays. Normalizing to the KS --> pi+
pi- count in the same data sample, we obtain BR(KS --> pi e nu) = (6.91 +-
0.37) 10^-4, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation.Comment: 9 pages, 5 Encapsulated Postscript figures. Submitted to Phys. Lett.
Study of the Decay phi --> eta pi0 gamma with the KLOE detector
In a sample of 5.3x10^7 phi-decays observed with the KLOE detector at the
Frascati phi-factory Dafne we find 605 eta pi0 gamma events with eta -->
gamma\gamma and 197 eta pi0 gamma events with eta --> pi+ pi- pi0. The decay
phi --> eta pi0 gamma is dominated by the process phi --> a0 gamma. From a fit
to the eta pi0 mass spectrum we find BR(phi --> ao(980) gamma)= (7.4 +-
