On the recent Introduction of outboard engines along the Coromandal coast
Introduction of outboard engines along the Coromandal coast and Pondicherry were studied. A total number of 232 outboard engines have been introduced at 16 fish landing centres in the South Arcot District. The outboard engines are fitted exclusively to catamarans with a length range of 8-10 m operating mainly gill nets, Pannu valai and Mani valai and the encircling bag-net, Eda valai
Marine fisheries of the north-east coast of India during 2008
The north-east region of India comprises of the
states of West Bengal and Orissa. There are about
100 landing centres distributed in these two coastal
states, of which most of them record seasonal fishing.
The estimated marine fish landings in this region was
4.83 lakh t in 2008, which formed about 15% of the
total ‘all India landings’
Marine fisheries of the south-east coast of India during 2008
The south-east coast of India comprising the
states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and
Pondicherry have a total coastline of 2050 km which
is 34% of the total coastline of the country. This region
is more diverse with respect to the number of species
that are landed. In 2007, it was observed that 499
species were landed in Tamil Nadu, 294 in Andhra
Pradesh and 115 in Pondicherry
Drugs such as methylphenidate, amphetamine compounds and modafinil have been trialed and used in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), sleep conditions, cocaine dependence and as an adjunct to antidepressants for depression. All these drugs, like stimulant drugs abuse, increase extracellular dopamine in the brain. This effect is associated with reinforcing as well as therapeutic effects. Methylphenidate and modafinil treatment of ADHD are associated with a reduced risk for later substance abuse among ADHD patients. There is evidence of the beneficial effects of the use of modafinil in cocaine dependence, altough there isn't conclusive evidence for the stimulants' efficacy in treatment of the stimulants' dependence. At this time, the physiopathology of drug abuse and dependence is unknown, but it's known that the very critical point is that the reinforcing effects are associated with rapid changes in dopamine increases, whereas the therapeutic effects are associated with slowly and smoothly rising dopamine levels, such as are achieved with low doses and oral administration. Due to this, it's necessary to study the neurobiological bases on which stimulants drugs are related, and their clinical use in dependence treatment
Social presence and dishonesty in retail
Self-service checkouts (SCOs) in retail can benefit consumers and retailers, providing control and autonomy to shoppers independent from staff, together with reduced queuing times. Recent research indicates that the absence of staff may provide the opportunity for consumers to behave dishonestly, consistent with a perceived lack of social presence. This study examined whether a social presence in the form of various instantiations of embodied, visual, humanlike SCO interface agents had an effect on opportunistic behaviour. Using a simulated SCO scenario, participants experienced various dilemmas in which they could financially benefit themselves undeservedly. We hypothesised that a humanlike social presence integrated within the checkout screen would receive more attention and result in fewer instances of dishonesty compared to a less humanlike agent. This was partially supported by the results. The findings contribute to the theoretical framework in social presence research. We concluded that companies adopting self-service technology may consider the implementation of social presence in technology applications to support ethical consumer behaviour, but that more research is required to explore the mixed findings in the current study.<br/
Overview of marine fisheries in India during 2007
Fisheries sector in India plays an important role
in the country’s economy and it supports the livelihood
of millions of people. India is having 8,129 km of
coastal length with 2.02 million sq. km of Exclusive
Economic Zone (upto 200 m depth) and 0.452 million
sq. km of continental shelf area
Induction, expression and characterisation of laccase genes from the marine-derived fungal strains Nigrospora sp. CBMAI 1328 and Arthopyrenia sp. CBMAI 1330
The capability of the fungi Nigrospora sp. CBMAI 1328 and Arthopyrenia sp. CBMAI 1330 isolated from marine sponge to synthesise laccases (Lcc) in the presence of the inducer copper (110 M) was assessed. In a liquid culture medium supplemented with 5 M of copper sulphate after 5 days of incubation, Nigrospora sp. presented the highest Lcc activity (25.2 UL1). The effect of copper on Lcc gene expression was evaluated by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Nigrospora sp. showed the highest gene expression of Lcc under the same conditions of Lcc synthesis. The highest Lcc expression by the Arthopyrenia sp. was detected at 96 h of incubation in absence of copper. Molecular approaches allowed the detection of Lcc isozymes and suggest the presence of at least two undescribed putative genes. Additionally, Lcc sequences from the both fungal strains clustered with other Lcc sequences from other fungi that inhabit marine environments.M. The Aminopeptidase CD13 Induces Homotypic Aggregation in Neutrophils and Impairs Collagen Invasion.
Aminopeptidase N (CD13) is a widely expressed cell surface metallopeptidase involved in the migration of cancer and endothelial cells. Apart from our demonstration that CD13 modulates the efficacy of tumor necrosis factor-α-induced apoptosis in neutrophils, no other function for CD13 has been ascribed in this cell. We hypothesized that CD13 may be involved in neutrophil migration and/or homotypic aggregation. Using purified human blood neutrophils we confirmed the expression of CD13 on neutrophils and its up-regulation by pro-inflammatory agonists. However, using the anti-CD13 monoclonal antibody WM-15 and the aminopeptidase enzymatic inhibitor bestatin we were unable to demonstrate any direct involvement of CD13 in neutrophil polarisation or chemotaxis. In contrast, IL-8-mediated neutrophil migration in type I collagen gels was significantly impaired by the anti-CD13 monoclonal antibodies WM-15 and MY7. Notably, these antibodies also induced significant homotypic aggregation of neutrophils, which was dependent on CD13 cross-linking and was attenuated by phosphoinositide 3-kinase and extracellular signal-related kinase 1/2 inhibition. Live imaging demonstrated that in WM-15-treated neutrophils, where homotypic aggregation was evident, the number of cells entering IL-8 impregnated collagen I gels was significantly reduced. These data reveal a novel role for CD13 in inducing homotypic aggregation in neutrophils, which results in a transmigration deficiency; this mechanism may be relevant to neutrophil micro-aggregation in vivo. This work was funded by a Medical Research Council Research Training Fellowship to CAF (G0900329), Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT), CUHNHSFT, Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the NIHR Cambridge Biomedical Research Centre. Feature Extraction Methods by Various Concepts using SOM
Image retrieval systems gained traction with the increased use of visual and media data. It is critical to understand and manage big data, lot of analysis done in image retrieval applications. Given the considerable difficulty involved in handling big data using a traditional approach, there is a demand for its efficient management, particularly regarding accuracy and robustness. To solve these issues, we employ content-based image retrieval (CBIR) methods within both supervised , unsupervised pictures. Self-Organizing Maps (SOM), a competitive unsupervised learning aggregation technique, are applied in our innovative multilevel fusion methodology to extract features that are categorised. The proposed methodology beat state-of-the-art algorithms with 90.3% precision, approximate retrieval precision (ARP) of 0.91, and approximate retrieval recall (ARR) of 0.82 when tested on several benchmark datasets
