Architectures and Key Technical Challenges for 5G Systems Incorporating Satellites
Satellite Communication systems are a promising solution to extend and
complement terrestrial networks in unserved or under-served areas. This aspect
is reflected by recent commercial and standardisation endeavours. In
particular, 3GPP recently initiated a Study Item for New Radio-based, i.e., 5G,
Non-Terrestrial Networks aimed at deploying satellite systems either as a
stand-alone solution or as an integration to terrestrial networks in mobile
broadband and machine-type communication scenarios. However, typical satellite
channel impairments, as large path losses, delays, and Doppler shifts, pose
severe challenges to the realisation of a satellite-based NR network. In this
paper, based on the architecture options currently being discussed in the
standardisation fora, we discuss and assess the impact of the satellite channel
characteristics on the physical and Medium Access Control layers, both in terms
of transmitted waveforms and procedures for enhanced Mobile BroadBand (eMBB)
and NarrowBand-Internet of Things (NB-IoT) applications. The proposed analysis
shows that the main technical challenges are related to the PHY/MAC procedures,
in particular Random Access (RA), Timing Advance (TA), and Hybrid Automatic
Repeat reQuest (HARQ) and, depending on the considered service and

Scattering into Cones and Flux across Surfaces in Quantum Mechanics: a Pathwise Probabilistic Approach
We show how the scattering-into-cones and flux-across-surfaces theorems in
Quantum Mechanics have very intuitive pathwise probabilistic versions based on
some results by Carlen about large time behaviour of paths of Nelson
diffusions. The quantum mechanical results can be then recovered by taking

Antifungal effect of volatile organic compounds produced by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens CPA-8 against fruit pathogen decays of cherry
The present work focuses on the antifungal effect of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens CPA-8 against Monilinia laxa, M. fructicola and Botrytis cinera, three postharvest fruit pathogens of sweet cherry fruit. VOCs were evaluated with a double petri dish assay against mycelial and colony growth of target pathogens. For this purpose, CPA-8 was grown on different media and cultured for 24 and 48 h at 30 °C before assays. Data showed that mycelial growth inhibition was higher when CPA-8 was grown on Tryptone Soya Agar (TSA) while no differences were generally observed when CPA-8 was cultured for either, 24 and 48 h. Moreover, no effects were observed on colony growth. The main volatile compounds emitted by CPA-8 were identified by solid-phase microextraction (SPME)-gas chromatography as 1,3 pentadiene, acetoin (3-hydroxy-2-butanone) and thiophene. Pure compounds were also tested in vitro on mycelial growth inhibition and their EC50 values against the three pathogens were estimated. Thiophene was the most effective VOC, showing more than 82% suppression of mycelial growth at the highest concentration (1.35 μL/mL headspace) and EC50 values ranging from 0.06 to 6.67 μL/mL headspace. Finally, the effectiveness of thiophene and CPA-8 VOCs was evaluated against artificially inoculated cherry fruits. Among the target pathogens, M. fructicola was clearly controlled by CPA-8 with less than 25% of rotten fruits compared to the control (65% disease incidence) and for all pathogens, less than 37.5% of CPA-8 treated decayed fruits produced spores (disease sporulation). Otherwise, pure thiophene showed no effect against any pathogen on disease incidence and disease sporulation. The results indicated that VOCs produced by B. amyloliquefaciens CPA-8 could develop an additive antifungal effect against postharvest fruit pathogens on stone fruit.This research was supported by the European project BIOCOMES FP7-612713 and by the Catalan government (Generalitat de Catalunya) for the PhD grant 2016-FI-B2 00143 (Amparo M. Erucin exhibits vasorelaxing effects and antihypertensive activity by H2 S-releasing properties.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Hydrogen sulfide (H2 S)-releasing agents are viewed as
potential antihypertensive drugs. Recently, natural isothiocyanates emerged as
original H2 S-donor agents. Among them, erucin, present in some edible
cruciferous plants, shows suitable H2 S-releasing properties and features of
"druggability." The aim of this work was to investigate the erucin-mediated
release of H2 S inside vascular cells, its vasorelaxing effects, and activity on
BP of normo and hypertensive animals.
EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Intracellular H2 S-release and the hyperpolarizing effect
of erucin were tested using fluorescent dye, in human aortic smooth muscle cells
(HASMCs). Its direct vasorelaxing effect and ability to inhibit
noradrenaline-induced vasoconstriction were evaluated on endothelium-intact or
-denuded rat aortic rings. Its vasodilator properties were tested in coronary
arteries using Langendorff-perfused rat hearts. Finally, erucin's
antihypertensive activity was evaluated in vivo in normotensive and spontaneously
hypertensive rats (SHRs) by recording systolic BP using the tail-cuff method.
KEY RESULTS: Erucin induced the release of H2 S inside HASMCs. Moreover, erucin
hyperpolarized the membrane of HASMCs membrane in a concentration-dependent
manner. It induced vasodilatation of rat aortic rings, in endothelium-denuded
vessels. This effect was further improved by the presence of endothelial NO. When
pre-incubated with rat aortic rings, erucin induced concentration-dependent
inhibition of noradrenaline-induced vasoconstriction. Erucin did not affect basal
coronary flow but restored the flow to normal in pre-contracted coronary vessels.
Finally, in vivo, erucin decreased systolic BP in SHRs by about 25%, and restored
the BP to values observed in normotensive rats.
CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Erucin is an H2 S donor endowed with vasorelaxing
and antihypertensive effects
Suited for Success? : Suits, Status, and Hybrid Masculinity

Each of these men varied in their subject positions—body shape, ethnicity, age, and gender identity—which allowed us to look at the influence of men’s intersectional identities on their relationship with their suits. The men in our research all understood the suit according to its most common representation in popular culture: a symbol of hegemonic masculinity. While they wore the suit to embody hegemonic masculine configurations of practice—power, status, and rationality—most of these men were simultaneously marginalized by the gender hierarchy. We explain this disjuncture by using the concept of hybrid masculinity and illustrate that changes in the style of hegemonic masculinity leave its substance intact. Our findings expand thinking about hybrid masculinity by revealing the ways subordinated masculinities appropriate and reinforce hegemonic masculinity.Peer reviewe

Astrophysically Triggered Searches for Gravitational Waves: Status and Prospects
In gravitational-wave detection, special emphasis is put onto searches that
focus on cosmic events detected by other types of astrophysical observatories.
The astrophysical triggers, e.g. from gamma-ray and X-ray satellites, optical
telescopes and neutrino observatories, provide a trigger time for analyzing
gravitational wave data coincident with the event. In certain cases the
expected frequency range, source energetics, directional and progenitor
information is also available. Beyond allowing the recognition of gravitational
waveforms with amplitudes closer to the noise floor of the detector, these
triggered searches should also lead to rich science results even before the
onset of Advanced LIGO. In this paper we provide a broad review of LIGO's
astrophysically triggered searches and the sources they target
Implications For The Origin Of GRB 051103 From LIGO Observations
We present the results of a LIGO search for gravitational waves (GWs)
associated with GRB 051103, a short-duration hard-spectrum gamma-ray burst
(GRB) whose electromagnetically determined sky position is coincident with the
spiral galaxy M81, which is 3.6 Mpc from Earth. Possible progenitors for
short-hard GRBs include compact object mergers and soft gamma repeater (SGR)
giant flares. A merger progenitor would produce a characteristic GW signal that
should be detectable at the distance of M81, while GW emission from an SGR is
not expected to be detectable at that distance. We found no evidence of a GW
signal associated with GRB 051103. Assuming weakly beamed gamma-ray emission
with a jet semi-angle of 30 deg we exclude a binary neutron star merger in M81
as the progenitor with a confidence of 98%. Neutron star-black hole mergers are
excluded with > 99% confidence. If the event occurred in M81 our findings
support the the hypothesis that GRB 051103 was due to an SGR giant flare,
