Genetic iterative search-centre-shifting K-best sphere detection for rank-deficient SDM-OFDM systems
A generic sphere-detection (SD) scheme is proposed, which substantially reduces the detection complexity by decomposing it into two stages, namely the generic iterative search-centre-update phase and the reduced-complexity search around it. This two-stage philosophy circumvents the high complexity of channel-coded soft-decision aided SDs

Iterative Multiuser Minimum Symbol Error Rate Beamforming Aided QAM Receiver
A novel iterative soft interference cancellation (SIC) aided beamforming receiver is developed for high-throughput quadrature amplitude modulation systems. The proposed SIC based minimum symbol error rate (MSER) multiuser detection scheme guarantees the direct and explicit minimization of the symbol error rate at the output of the detector. Adopting the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart technique, we compare the EXIT characteristics of an iterative MSER multiuser detector (MUD) with those of the conventional minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) detector. As expected, the proposed SIC-MSER MUD outperforms the SIC-MMSE MUD. Index Terms—Beamforming, iterative multiuser detection, minimum symbol error rate, quadrature amplitude modulation
Adaptive MBER space-time DFE assisted multiuser detection for SDMA systems
In this contribution we propose a space-time decision feedback equalization (ST-DFE) assisted multiuser detection (MUD) scheme for multiple antenna aided space division multiple access systems. A minimum bit error rate (MBER) design is invoked for the MUD, which is shown to be capable of improving the achievable bit error rate performance over that of the minimum mean square error (MMSE) design. An adaptive MBER ST-DFE-MUD is proposed using the least bit error rate algorithm, which is demonstrated to consistently outperform the least mean square (LMS) algorithm, while achieving a lower computational complexity than the LMS algorithm for the binary signalling scheme. Simulation results demonstrate that theMBER ST-DFE-MUD is more robust to channel estimation errors as well as to error propagation imposed by decision feedback errors, compared to the MMSE ST-DFE-MUD
Adaptive minimum symbol error rate beamforming assisted receiver for quadrature amplitude modulation systems
An adaptive beamforming assisted receiver is proposed for multiple antenna aided multiuser systems that employ bandwidth efficient quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). A novel minimum symbol error rate (MSER) design is proposed for the beamforming assisted receiver, where the system’s symbol error rate is directly optimized. Hence the MSER approach provides a significant symbol error ratio performance enhancement over the classic minimum mean square error design. A sample-by-sample adaptive algorithm, referred to as the least symbol error rate (LBER) technique, is derived for allowing the adaptive implementation of the system to arrive from its initial beamforming weight solution to MSER beamforming solution
Radial Basis Function Aided Space-Time Equalization in Dispersive Fading Uplink Environments
A novel Radial Basis Function Network (RBFN) assisted Decision-Feedback aided Space-Time Equalizer (DF-STE) designed for receivers employing multiple antennas is proposed. The Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of the RBFN aided DF-STE is evaluated when communicating over correlated Rayleigh fading channels, whose Channel Impulse Response (CIR) is estimated using a Kalman filtering based channel estimator. The proposed receiver structure outperforms the linear Minimum Mean-Squared Error benchmarker and it is less sensitive to both error propagation and channel estimation errors
A Robust Nonlinear Beamforming Assisted Receiver for BPSK Signalling
Nonlinear beamforming designed for wireless communications is investigated. We derive the optimal nonlinear beamforming assisted receiver designed for binary phase shift keying (BPSK) signalling. It is shown that this optimal Bayesian beamformer significantly outperforms the classic linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) beamformer at the expense of an increased complexity. Hence the achievable user capacity of the wireless system invoking the proposed beamformer is substantially enhanced. In particular, when the angular separation between the desired and interfering signals is below a certain threshold, a linear beamformer will fail while a nonlinear beamformer can still perform adequately. Blockadaptive implementation of the optimal Bayesian beamformer can be realized using a Radial Basis Function network based on the Relevance Vector Machine (RVM) for classification, and a recursive sample-by-sample adaptation is proposed based on an enhanced ?-means clustering aided recursive least squares algorithm
Asymptotic quasinormal modes of a coupled scalar field in the Gibbons-Maeda dilaton spacetime
Adopting the monodromy technique devised by Motl and Neitzke, we investigate
analytically the asymptotic quasinormal frequencies of a coupled scalar field
in the Gibbons-Maeda dilaton spacetime. We find that it is described by , which depends on the structure
parameters of the background spacetime and on the coupling between the scalar
and gravitational fields. As the parameters and tend to zero,
the real parts of the asymptotic quasinormal frequencies becomes ,
which is consistent with Hod's conjecture. When , the formula
becomes that of the Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m spacetime.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur
Resonant Interactions in Rotating Homogeneous Three-dimensional Turbulence
Direct numerical simulations of three-dimensional (3D) homogeneous turbulence
under rapid rigid rotation are conducted to examine the predictions of resonant
wave theory for both small Rossby number and large Reynolds number. The
simulation results reveal that there is a clear inverse energy cascade to the
large scales, as predicted by 2D Navier-Stokes equations for resonant
interactions of slow modes. As the rotation rate increases, the
vertically-averaged horizontal velocity field from 3D Navier-Stokes converges
to the velocity field from 2D Navier-Stokes, as measured by the energy in their
difference field. Likewise, the vertically-averaged vertical velocity from 3D
Navier-Stokes converges to a solution of the 2D passive scalar equation. The
energy flux directly into small wave numbers in the plane from
non-resonant interactions decreases, while fast-mode energy concentrates closer
to that plane. The simulations are consistent with an increasingly dominant
role of resonant triads for more rapid rotation
