Sensitivity to Gravitational Waves from Compact Binary Coalescences Achieved during LIGO's Fifth and Virgo's First Science Run
We summarize the sensitivity achieved by the LIGO and Virgo gravitational
wave detectors for compact binary coalescence (CBC) searches during LIGO's
fifth science run and Virgo's first science run. We present noise spectral
density curves for each of the four detectors that operated during these
science runs which are representative of the typical performance achieved by
the detectors for CBC searches. These spectra are intended for release to the
public as a summary of detector performance for CBC searches during these

Directional limits on persistent gravitational waves using LIGO S5 science data
The gravitational-wave (GW) sky may include nearby pointlike sources as well
as astrophysical and cosmological stochastic backgrounds. Since the relative
strength and angular distribution of the many possible sources of GWs are not
well constrained, searches for GW signals must be performed in a
model-independent way. To that end we perform two directional searches for
persistent GWs using data from the LIGO S5 science run: one optimized for
pointlike sources and one for arbitrary extended sources. The latter result is
the first of its kind. Finding no evidence to support the detection of GWs, we
present 90% confidence level (CL) upper-limit maps of GW strain power with
typical values between 2-20x10^-50 strain^2 Hz^-1 and 5-35x10^-49 strain^2
Hz^-1 sr^-1 for pointlike and extended sources respectively. The limits on
pointlike sources constitute a factor of 30 improvement over the previous best
limits. We also set 90% CL limits on the narrow-band root-mean-square GW strain
from interesting targets including Sco X-1, SN1987A and the Galactic Center as
low as ~7x10^-25 in the most sensitive frequency range near 160 Hz. These
limits are the most constraining to date and constitute a factor of 5
improvement over the previous best limits.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Comparative transcriptomics and metabolomics reveal specialized metabolite drought stress responses in switchgrass (<i>Panicum virgatum</i> L.)
⋅ Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a bioenergy model crop valued for its energy efficiency and drought tolerance resilience. The related monocot species rice (Oryza sativa) and maize (Zea mays) deploy species-specific, specialized metabolites as core stress defenses. By contrast, specialized chemical defenses in switchgrass are largely unknown. ⋅ To investigate specialized metabolic drought responses in switchgrass, we integrated tissue-specific transcriptome and metabolite analyses of the genotypes Alamo and Cave-in-Rock that feature different drought tolerance. ⋅ The more drought-susceptible Cave-in-Rock featured an earlier onset of transcriptomic changes and significantly more differentially expressed genes in response to drought compared to Alamo. Specialized pathways showed moderate differential expression compared to pronounced transcriptomic alterations in carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism. However, diterpenoid-biosynthetic genes showed drought-inducible expression in Alamo roots, contrasting largely unaltered triterpenoid and phenylpropanoid pathways. Metabolomic analyses identified common and genotype-specific flavonoids and terpenoids. Consistent with transcriptomic alterations, several root diterpenoids showed significant drought-induced accumulation, whereas triterpenoid abundance remained predominantly unchanged. Structural analysis of drought-responsive root diterpenoids verified these metabolites as oxygenated furanoditerpenoids. ⋅ Drought-dependent transcriptome and metabolite profiles provide the foundation to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying switchgrass environmental resilience. Accumulation of specialized root diterpenoids and corresponding pathway transcripts supports a role in drought stress tolerance for these compounds

Reduced yield detonation characteristics in large failure diameter materials
We have made detailed measurements of the approach to steady, self-supported propagating shock waves at greatly reduced yield in composite propellants. Propa- gation velocities are less than one half the theoretical value expected for full reac- tion at the sonic plane. Previous experimental studies 1 have given evidence of similar behavior. Also, previous theoretical work 2 in an analytic form has shown the possibility of reduced yield detonations. We have developed a reaction model coupled with a hydrody- namic code that together provide a description of the coupling of the complex reac- tion behavior with shock propagation and expansion in energetic materials. The model results show clearly that if the dependence of reaction rate on pressure is of sufficiently low order and the mode of consumption is by "grain burning" the calcu- lated detonation behavior closely parallels the observed non-ideal results. We describe the experiments, the reaction model, and compare experimental and calculational results. We also extend the model to predict results in the unexplored regime of very large size charges

In response to a sharp decline in recreational fishing participation in Queensland, Australia, I sought to identify constraints experienced by fishers in Queensland and understand how demographic variables, fishing participation variables, and fishing motivations influence the amount and type of constraints experienced. In a survey of Queensland recreational fishers, 70% reported experiencing constraints-predominantly lack of time, crowding, unavailability of facilities, and costs associated with fishing. Fishers with higher incomes, fishers with higher centrality of fishing to lifestyle, fishers who placed higher importance on motivations related to catching fish and relaxation, and fishers who were male were more likely to experience constraints. With the exception of gender, variables found to have a significant effect on the presence of constraints also had a significant influence on the types of constraints experienced. Results provide insight into factors affecting recreational fishing participation in Queensland; however, additional research-particularly with recent fishing drop-outs-is needed to fully understand recent declines in fishing participation
Isolation and Partial Characterisation of a Novel Lectin from Aegle marmelos Fruit and Its Effect on Adherence and Invasion of Shigellae to HT29 Cells
Lectins are a class of ubiquitous proteins/glycoproteins that are abundantly found in nature. Lectins have unique carbohydrate binding property and hence have been exploited as drugs against various infectious diseases. We have isolated one such novel lectin from the fruit pulp of Aegle marmelos. The isolated lectin was partially characterised and its effect against Shigella dysenteriae infection was evaluated. The isolated lectin was found to be a dimeric protein with N-acetylgalactosamine, mannose and sialic acid binding specificity. The effect of Aegle marmelos fruit lectin on the adherence of Shigella dysenteriae to human colonic epithelial cells (HT29 cells) was evaluated by Enzyme Linked Immune Sorbent Assay and invasion was analysed. The protective nature of the Aegle marmelos fruit lectin was assessed by analyzing apoptosis through dual staining method. Aegle marmelos fruit lectin significantly inhibited hemagglutination activity of Shigella and its minimum inhibitory concentration is 0.625 µg/well. Further, at this concentration lectin inhibited Shigella dysenteriae adherence and invasion of HT29 cells and protects the HT29 cells from Shigella dysenteriae induced apoptosis. Demonstration of Ignition Radiation Temperatures in Indirect-Drive Inertial Confinement Fusion Hohlraums
All-sky Search for Periodic Gravitational Waves in the Full S5 LIGO Data
We report on an all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the
frequency band 50-800 Hz and with the frequency time derivative in the range of
0 through -6e-9 Hz/s. Such a signal could be produced by a nearby spinning and
slightly non-axisymmetric isolated neutron star in our galaxy. After recent
improvements in the search program that yielded a 10x increase in computational
efficiency, we have searched in two years of data collected during LIGO's fifth
science run and have obtained the most sensitive all-sky upper limits on
gravitational wave strain to date. Near 150 Hz our upper limit on worst-case
linearly polarized strain amplitude is 1e-24, while at the high end of
our frequency range we achieve a worst-case upper limit of 3.8e-24 for all
polarizations and sky locations. These results constitute a factor of two
improvement upon previously published data. A new detection pipeline utilizing
a Loosely Coherent algorithm was able to follow up weaker outliers, increasing
the volume of space where signals can be detected by a factor of 10, but has
not revealed any gravitational wave signals. The pipeline has been tested for
robustness with respect to deviations from the model of an isolated neutron
star, such as caused by a low-mass or long-period binary companion.Comment: 18 page
