Double pulses and cascades above 2 PeV in IceCube
IceCube collaboration has seen an unexpected population of high energy
neutrinos compatible with an astrophysical origin. We consider two categories
of events that can help to diagnose cosmic neutrinos: double pulse, that may
allow us to clearly discriminate the cosmic component of tau neutrinos;
cascades with deposited energy above 2 PeV, including events produced by
electron antineutrinos at the Glashow resonance, that can be used to
investigate the neutrino production mechanisms. We show that one half of the
double pulse signal is due to the neutrinos spectral region already probed by
IceCube. By normalizing to HESE data, we find that 10 more years are required
to obtain 90% probability to observe a double pulse. The cascades above 2 PeV
provide us a sensitive probe of the high energy tail of the neutrino spectrum
and are potentially observable, but even in this case, the dependence on type
of the source is mild. In fact we find that pp or p{\gamma} mechanisms give a
difference in the number of cascades above 2 PeV of about 25 % that can be
discriminated at 2{\sigma} in about 50 years of data taking.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in EPJ
Abstract; The gray mold, caused by the fungus Botryotinia fuckeliana (Botrytis cinerea), which exists in almost all vineyards in the world, causes serious reductions in quality and quantity of grapes produced. The study aimed to evaluate the impacts of climate change on the favorability of occurrence of gray rot of grapevine in Brazil. Information was collected from average temperature and leaf wetness of the reference period (1961 - 1990) and future (2011 - 2040, 2041 - 2070 and 2071 - 2100) for Brazil, organized in the database in a Geographic Information System (GIS) Idrisi 32. The favorability was obtained by applying logic equations, according to the conditions and restrictions of leaf wetness and average temperature, resulting in maps of spatial distribution of gray mold in Brazil. In general, it can be expected a positive picture for the future, because the areas where the condition for the development of the disease was very favorable decreased, and the areas of unfavorable condition showed an increase mainly during the winter
CHANTI: a Fast and Efficient Charged Particle Veto Detector for the NA62 Experiment at CERN
The design, construction and test of a charged particle detector made of
scintillation counters read by Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) is described.
The detector, which operates in vacuum and is used as a veto counter in the
NA62 experiment at CERN, has a single channel time resolution of 1.14 ns, a
spatial resolution of ~2.5 mm and an efficiency very close to 1 for penetrating
charged particles
Absolute calibration and beam reconstruction of MITO (a ground-based instrument in the millimetric region)
An efficient sky data reconstruction derives from a precise characterization
of the observing instrument. Here we describe the reconstruction of
performances of a single-pixel 4-band photometer installed at MITO (Millimeter
and Infrared Testagrigia Observatory) focal plane. The strategy of differential
sky observations at millimeter wavelengths, by scanning the field of view at
constant elevation wobbling the subreflector, induces a good knowledge of beam
profile and beam-throw amplitude, allowing efficient data recovery. The
problems that arise estimating the detectors throughput by drift scanning on
planets are shown. Atmospheric transmission, monitored by skydip technique, is
considered for deriving final responsivities for the 4 channels using planets
as primary calibrators.Comment: 14 pages, 6 fiugres, accepted for pubblication by New Astronomy (25

Cosmic Microwave Background Temperature at Galaxy Clusters
We have deduced the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature in the Coma
cluster (A1656, ), and in A2163 () from spectral
measurements of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect over four passbands at radio
and microwave frequencies. The resulting temperatures at these redshifts are
K and K, respectively. These values confirm the expected
relation , where K is the value
measured by the COBE/FIRAS experiment. Alternative scaling relations that are
conjectured in non-standard cosmologies can be constrained by the data; for
example, if or , then
and (at 95% confidence). We
briefly discuss future prospects for more precise SZ measurements of at
higher redshifts.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, ApJL accepted for publicatio
Redox activity of melanin from the ink sac of Sepia officinalis by means of colorimetric oxidative assay
The redox properties of natural extract from cuttlefish ink sac (Sepia officinalis) and synthetic melanin used as a biomimetic in melanin structural investigation were determined by comparison of this phenol-based heterogeneous pigment with gallic acid used as a standard in Folinâ Ciocalteu colorimetric assay widely employed for characterisation of oxidative properties of biomaterials. Reactivity of sepia melanin reported here is much higher than previously indicated and this protocol should allow the redox characterisation of all melanins irrespective of their origin and composition.European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) [grant agreement number REGPOT-CT2012-316331-POLARIS
Triple Experiment Spectrum of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect in the Coma Cluster: H_0
The Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect was previously measured in the Coma cluster
by the Owens Valley Radio Observatory and Millimeter and IR Testa Grigia
Observatory experiments and recently also with the Wilkinson Microwave
Anisotropy Probe satellite. We assess the consistency of these results and
their implications on the feasibility of high-frequency SZ work with
ground-based telescopes. The unique data set from the combined measurements at
six frequency bands is jointly analyzed, resulting in a best-fit value for the
Thomson optical depth at the cluster center, tau_{0}=(5.35 \pm 0.67) 10^{-3}.
The combined X-ray and SZ determined properties of the gas are used to
determine the Hubble constant. For isothermal gas with a \beta density profile
we derive H_0 = 84 \pm 26 km/(s\cdot Mpc); the (1\sigma) error includes only
observational SZ and X-ray uncertainties.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur
A prototype large-angle photon veto detector for the P326 experiment at CERN
The P326 experiment at the CERN SPS has been proposed with the purpose of
measuring the branching ratio for the decay K^+ \to \pi^+ \nu \bar{\nu} to
within 10%. The photon veto system must provide a rejection factor of 10^8 for
\pi^0 decays. We have explored two designs for the large-angle veto detectors,
one based on scintillating tiles and the other using scintillating fibers. We
have constructed a prototype module based on the fiber solution and evaluated
its performance using low-energy electron beams from the Frascati Beam-Test
Facility. For comparison, we have also tested a tile prototype constructed for
the CKM experiment, as well as lead-glass modules from the OPAL electromagnetic
barrel calorimeter. We present results on the linearity, energy resolution, and
time resolution obtained with the fiber prototype, and compare the detection
efficiency for electrons obtained with all three instruments.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables. Presented at the 2007 IEEE Nuclear
