Origination and extinction patterns of mammals in three Central Western Mediterranean islands from the Late Miocene to Quaternary.
An overview of the population histories of three insular realms (Gargano palaeo-archipelago, Sardinia–Maritime Tuscany palaeobioprovince and the Sicilian insular complex) during the Late Miocene and Quaternary are here presented. The complexity of biodiversity changes in the islands is analysed to propose an interpretation of origination and extinction patterns. The study highlighted several important aspects of insular faunas. Evolutionary radiations were found to contribute significantly only to the Gargano faunal diversity, likely because the area was an archipelago at the time.
Another interesting result is that large and small mammals do not disperse and become extinct all at the same time on each island. In fact, because of their distinct body sizes, large and small mammals have different dispersal ability and therefore different chances to cross-filtering barriers. But distinct body sizes means also different influence on diversity, resistance to environmental changes and likelihood of extinction. Another important point is that large mammalian carnivores at the top of the trophic net are quite more fragile and susceptible to become extinct than other predators. The study finally shows the clear influence that the intense Middle and Late Pleistocene climate-driven environmental changes had on
island communities. The reconstruction of the faunal histories of Sardinia and Sicily shows that without exchanges with the mainland the island system represents a rather stable refuge area not too affected by the changes in the ‘‘physical’’ parameters of the environment. In contrast, if the island is frequently connected with the continent, insular faunal assemblages tend to behave as their mainland

Water adsorption on amorphous silica surfaces: A Car-Parrinello simulation study
A combination of classical molecular dynamics (MD) and ab initio
Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) simulations is used to investigate the
adsorption of water on a free amorphous silica surface. From the classical MD
SiO_2 configurations with a free surface are generated which are then used as
starting configurations for the CPMD.We study the reaction of a water molecule
with a two-membered ring at the temperature T=300K. We show that the result of
this reaction is the formation of two silanol groups on the surface. The
activation energy of the reaction is estimated and it is shown that the

X-ray bolometric corrections for Compton-thick active galactic nuclei
We present X-ray bolometric correction factors, (), for Compton-thick (CT) active galactic nuclei (AGN) with the aim
of testing AGN torus models, probing orientation effects, and estimating the
bolometric output of the most obscured AGN. We adopt bolometric luminosities,
, from literature infrared (IR) torus modeling and compile published
intrinsic 2--10 keV X-ray luminosities, , from X-ray torus modeling of
NuSTAR data. Our sample consists of 10 local CT AGN where both of these
estimates are available. We test for systematic differences in
values produced when using two widely used IR torus models and two widely used
X-ray torus models, finding consistency within the uncertainties. We find that
the mean of our sample in the range
erg/s is log
with an intrinsic scatter of dex, and that our derived
values are consistent with previously established relationships between
and and and Eddington ratio. We
investigate if is dependent on by comparing our results on
CT AGN to published results on less-obscured AGN, finding no significant
dependence. Since many of our sample are megamaser AGN, known to be viewed
edge-on, and furthermore under the assumptions of AGN unification whereby
unobscured AGN are viewed face-on, our result implies that the X-ray emitting
corona is not strongly anisotropic. Finally, we present values
for CT AGN identified in X-ray surveys as a function of their observed ,
where an estimate of their intrinsic is not available, and redshift,
useful for estimating the bolometric output of the most obscured AGN across

Fabrication of high-resolution strain sensors based on wafer-level vacuum packaged MEMS resonators
The paper reports on the fabrication and characterization of high-resolution strain sensors for structural materials based on Silicon On Insulator flexural resonators manufactured by polysilicon Low-Pressure Chemical Vapour Deposition vacuum packaging. The sensors present sensitivity of 164 Hz/με and strain resolution limit of 150 pε on steel for a measurement time of 315 ms, in both tensile and compressive strain regimes. The readout of the sensor is implemented with a transimpedance oscillator circuit implemented on Printed Circuit Board, in which a microcontroller-based reciprocal frequency counter is integrated. The performance of the sensors on steel are investigated for measurement bandwidths from 1.5 to 500 Hz and a comparison with conventional metal strain gauges is proposed.The contribution of Mr. Filippo Bonafè, Mr. Fabrizio Tamarri, Mr. Michele Sanmartin and Mr. Giulio Pizzochero in the clean room processing employed for the manufacturing of the MEMS sensors is acknowledged. Application of latent class analysis in assessing the awareness, attitude, practice and satisfaction of paediatricians on sleep disorder management in children in Italy.
AIM:
To identify subgroups regarding paediatricians' awareness, attitude, practice and satisfaction about management of Sleep-Disordered Breathing (SDB) in Italy using Latent Class Analysis (LCA).
METHODS:
A cross-sectional study was conducted on a large sample of Italian paediatricians. Using a self-administered questionnaire, the study collected information on 420 Paediatric Hospital Paediatricians (PHPs) and 594 Family Care Paediatricians (FCPs). LCA was used to discover underlying response patterns, thus allowing identification of respondent groups with similar awareness, attitude, practice and satisfaction. A logistic regression model was used to investigate which independent variables influenced latent class membership. Analyses were performed using R 3.5.2 software. A p-value<0.05 was considered statistically significant.
RESULTS:
Two classes were identified: Class 1 (n = 368, 36.29%) "Untrained and poorly satisfied" and Class 2 (n = 646, 63.71%) "Trained and satisfied." Involving paediatric pneumologists or otorhinolaryngologists in clinical practice was associated with an increased probability of Class 2 membership (OR = 5.88, 95%CI [2.94-13.19]; OR = 15.95, 95% CI [10.92-23.81] respectively). Examining more than 20 children with SDB during the last month decreased the probability of Class 2 membership (OR = 0.29, 95% CI [0.14-0.61]). FCPs showed a higher probability of Class 2 membership than PHPs (OR = 4.64, 95% CI [3.31-6.55]).
CONCLUSIONS:
These findings suggest that the LCA approach can provide important information on how education and training could be tailored for different subgroups of paediatricians. In Italy standardized educational interventions improving paediatricians' screening of SDB are needed in order to guarantee efficient management of children with SDB and reduce the burden of disease
Constructing imperial imaginations through educational cinema in Britain and Italy (1922–1937)
During the period 1922–37, both the British and Italians launched institutes for educational cinematography and collaborated in the creation of the League of Nations’ International Educational Cinematographic Institute. Their leading newspapers dedicated entire sections to the advertising of educational campaigns through cinema. Comparing official documents and the print apparatus about the establishment and the activities of two institutes for educational cinema in Europe gives us a perception of how similarly and differently the British and Italians used their educational films to convey imperial sentiments and rhetoric into civilian life during fifteen years of colonial rule
Resolving the cosmic X-ray background with a next-generation high-energy X-ray observatory
The cosmic X-ray background (CXB), which peaks at an energy of ~30 keV, is
produced primarily by emission from accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs).
The CXB therefore serves as a constraint on the integrated SMBH growth in the
Universe and the accretion physics and obscuration in active galactic nuclei
(AGNs). This paper gives an overview of recent progress in understanding the
high-energy (>~10 keV) X-ray emission from AGNs and the synthesis of the CXB,
with an emphasis on results from NASA's NuSTAR hard X-ray mission. We then
discuss remaining challenges and open questions regarding the nature of AGN
obscuration and AGN physics. Finally, we highlight the exciting opportunities
for a next-generation, high-resolution hard X-ray mission to achieve the
long-standing goal of resolving and characterizing the vast majority of the

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in patients with malignant haematological diseases: 10 years' experience of infection in GIMEMA centres.
A retrospective survey was conducted over a 10-year period (1990-99) among 52 haematology divisions in order to evaluate the clinical and laboratory characteristics and outcome of patients with proven Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) complicating haematological diseases. The study included 55 patients (18 with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, 10 with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, eight with acute myeloid leukaemia, five with chronic myeloid leukaemia, four with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, four with multiple myeloma, three with myelodys-plastic syndrome, two with myelofibrosis and one with thalassemia) who developed PCP. Among these, 18 (33%) underwent stem cell transplantation; only two received an oral prophylaxis with trimethroprim/sulphamethoxazole. Twelve patients (22%) developed PCP despite protective isolation in a laminar airflow room. The most frequent symptoms were: fever (86%), dyspnoea (78%), non-productive cough (71%), thoracic pain (14%) and chills (5%); a severe hypoxaemia was present in 39 patients (71%). Chest radiography or computerized tomography showed interstitial infiltrates in 34 patients (62%), alveolar infiltrates in 12 patients (22%), and alveolar-interstitial infiltrates in nine patients (16%). Bronchoalveolar lavage was diagnostic in 47/48 patients, induced sputum in 9/18 patients and lung biopsy in 3/8 patients. The diagnosis was made in two patients at autopsy. All patients except one started a specific treatment (52 patients trimethroprim/sulphamethoxazole, one pentamidine and one dapsone). Sixteen patients (29%) died of PCP within 30 d of diagnosis. Multivariate analysis showed that prolonged steroid treatment (P < 0.006) and a radiological picture of diffuse lung involvement (P < 0.003) were negative diagnostic factors
