Quantum Interference in Off-Resonant Transport through Single Molecules
We provide a simple set of rules for predicting interference effects in
off-resonant transport through single-molecule junctions. These effects fall in
two classes, showing respectively an odd or an even number of nodes in the
linear conductance within a given molecular charge state, and we demonstrate
how to decide the interference class directly from the contacting geometry. For
neutral alternant hydrocarbons, we employ the Coulson-Rushbrooke-McLachlan
pairing theorem to show that the interference class is decided simply by
tunneling on and off the molecule from same, or different sublattices. More
generally, we investigate a range of smaller molecules by means of exact diag-
onalization combined with a perturbative treatment of the molecule-lead tunnel
coupling. While these results generally agree well with GW calculations, they
are shown to be at odds with simpler mean-field treatments. For molecules with
spin-degenerate ground states, we show that for most junctions, interference
causes no transmission nodes, but argue that it may lead to a non-standard
gate-dependence of the zero-bias Kondo resonance.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure
Influence of biomaterial nanotopography on the adhesive and elastic properties of Staphylococcus aureus cells
Despite the well-known beneficial effects of biomaterial nanopatterning on host tissue integration, the influence of controlled nanoscale topography on bacterial colonisation and infection remains unknown. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine the nanoscale effect of surface nanopatterning on biomaterial colonisation by S. aureus, utilising AFM nanomechanics and single-cell force spectroscopy (SCFS). Nanoindentation of S. aureus bound to planar (PL) and nanopatterned (SQ) polycarbonate (PC) surfaces suggested two distinct areas of mechanical properties, consistent with a central bacterial cell surrounded by a capsullar component. Nevertheless, no differences in elastic moduli were found between bacteria bound to PL and SQ, suggesting a minor role of nanopatterning in bacterial cell elasticity. Furthermore, SCFS demonstrated increased adhesion forces and work between S. aureus and SQ surfaces at 0 s and 1 s contact times. Although WLC modelling showed similarities in contour lengths for attachment to both surfaces, Poisson analysis suggests increased short-range forces for the S. aureus–SQ interactions. In the case of S. aureus–PL, long-range forces were found to not only be dominant but also repulsive in nature, which may help explain the reduced adhesion forces observed during AFM probing. In conclusion, although surface nanopatterning does not significantly influence the elasticity of attached bacterial cells, it was found to promote the early-adhesion of S. aureus cells to the biomaterial surface

Observation of magnetic circular dichroism in Fe L_{2,3} x-ray-fluorescence spectra
We report experiments demonstrating circular dichroism in the x-ray-fluorescence spectra of magnetic systems, as predicted by a recent theory. The data, on the L_{2,3} edges of ferromagnetic iron, are compared with fully relativistic local spin density functional calculations, and the relationship between the dichroic spectra and the spin-resolved local density of occupied states is discussed
Interpretation of x-ray-absorption dichroism experiments
A rule is derived to use x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra to extract the magnetic moment of the conduction-band states with j= l -1/2 separately from those with j= l + 1/2 as a function of energy. This quantity is straightforward to determine from the electronic band structure. The rule is illustrated with an application to pure iron and to the random substitutional alloy Fe_{80}CO_{20}
The development and testing of the Lens Antenna Deployment Demonstration (LADD) test article
The USAF Rome Laboratory and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, through contract to Grumman Corporation, have developed a space-qualifiable test article for the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization to demonstrate the critical structural and mechanical elements of single-axis roll-out membrane deployment for Space Based Radar (SBR) applications. The Lens Antenna Deployment Demonstration (LADD) test article, originally designed as a shuttle-attached flight experiment, is a large precision space structure which is representative of operational designs for space-fed lens antennas. Although the flight experiment was cancelled due to funding constraints and major revisions in the Strategic Defense System (SDS) architecture, development of this test article was completed in June 1989. To take full advantage of the existence of this unique structure, a series of ground tests are proposed which include static, dynamic, and thermal measurements in a simulated space environment. An equally important objective of these tests is the verification of the analytical tools used to design and develop large precision space structures
Rhythm and Vowel Quality in Accents of English
In a sample of 27 speakers of Scottish Standard English two notoriously variable consonantal features are investigated: the contrast of /m/ and /w/ and non-prevocalic /r/, the latter both in terms of its presence or absence and the phonetic form it takes, if present. The pattern of realisation of non-prevocalic /r/ largely confirms previously reported findings. But there are a number of surprising results regarding the merger of /m/ and /w/ and the loss of non-prevocalic /r/: While the former is more likely to happen in younger speakers and females, the latter seems more likely in older speakers and males. This is suggestive of change in progress leading to a loss of the /m/ - /w/ contrast, while the variation found in non-prevocalic /r/ follows an almost inverse sociolinguistic pattern that does not suggest any such change and is additionally largely explicable in language-internal terms. One phenomenon requiring further investigation is the curious effect direct contact with Southern English accents seems to have on non-prevocalic /r/: innovation on the structural level (i.e. loss) and conservatism on the realisational level (i.e. increased incidence of [r] and [r]) appear to be conditioned by the same sociolinguistic factors
