A Toom rule that increases the thickness of sets
Toom's north-east-self voting cellular automaton rule R is known to suppress
small minorities. A variant which we call R^+ is also known to turn an
arbitrary initial configuration into a homogenous one (without changing the
ones that were homogenous to start with). Here we show that R^+ always
increases a certain property of sets called thickness. This result is intended
as a step towards a proof of the fast convergence towards consensus under R^+.
The latter is observable experimentally, even in the presence of some noise.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure
QCD with light Wilson quarks on fine lattices (II): DD-HMC simulations and data analysis
In this second report on our recent numerical simulations of two-flavour QCD,
we provide further technical details on the simulations and describe the
methods we used to extract the meson masses and decay constants from the
generated ensembles of gauge fields. Among the topics covered are the choice of
the DD-HMC parameters, the issue of stability, autocorrelations and the
statistical error analysis. Extensive data tables are included as well as a
short discussion of the quark-mass dependence in partially quenched QCD,
supplementing the physics analysis that was presented in the first paper in

The Prevalence of Workaholism: A Survey Study in a Nationally Representative Sample of Norwegian Employees
Workaholism has become an increasingly popular area for empirical study. However, most studies examining the prevalence of workaholism have used non-representative samples and measures with poorly defined cut-off scores. To overcome these methodological limitations, a nationally representative survey among employees in Norway (N = 1,124) was conducted. Questions relating to gender, age, marital status, caretaker responsibility for children, percentage of full-time equivalent, and educational level were asked. Workaholism was assessed by the use of a psychometrically validated instrument (i.e., Bergen Work Addiction Scale). Personality was assessed using the Mini-International Personality Item Pool. Results showed that the prevalence of workaholism was 8.3% (95% CI = 6.7–9.9%). An adjusted logistic regression analysis showed that workaholism was negatively related to age and positively related to the personality dimensions agreeableness, neuroticism, and intellect/imagination. Clinical profile, risk and critical factors and the application of the “path towards intended violence” model in the case of mass shooter Dylann Roof
A threat assessment perspective, namely the Path towards Intended Violence, was applied in the case of the mass shooting perpetrated by Dylann Roof on June 17, 2015 at an Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. This perspective is important since it attempts to build on accounts regarding how he progressed towards his mass shooting, beyond the information presented in the forensic evaluations already available. The Path towards Intended Violence was found to be a critical and proximal factor for the mass shooting. This suggested finding is also consistent for other individuals, who were diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as neurotypical individuals, who have engaged in a mass shooting. The Path towards Intended Violence is also discussed as a potential way forward towards trying to identify individuals who may be more vulnerable and at-risk, so that appropriate interventions and supports can be put in place in order that such extreme violence can be prevented
Rare instances of individuals with autism supporting or engaging in terrorism
Purpose: The prevalence of individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder being associated with terroristic threats, lone wolf terrorism or affiliating with terroristic groups is rare.
Design/methodology/approach: However, several cases are presented, where individuals with autism are involved in making a naïve, empty terroristic threat, or uttering serious serial terroristic threats. Other cases are also presented of individuals being at risk for an abduction or being used by a terrorist group, and finally committing an act of domestic lone wolf terrorism.
Findings: Essential to the analysis was establishing a functional connection between autism-based deficits and the terroristic threats, terrorism, and when to not criminalize naïve, empty terroristic threats or acts.
Originality/value: Currently, tools available to law enforcement and prosecutors exploit the vulnerabilities and liabilities which arise as a result of group interactions, a “preventive” approach to terrorism that is not applicable to the solitary, “lone wolf” terrorist (Barnes, 2012; Zierhoffer, 2014).There has been relatively little research (including case studies) examining individuals with ASD who engage in terrorism. For instance, when dealing with an individual with ASD who is charged with terrorism, it is crucial to consider how the diagnosis of autism may have presented as a contextual vulnerability, and to make sure that justice, rehabilitation and management, are informed by an understanding of the person’s diagnosis of ASD (Al-Attar, 2016)
Discovery of the spectroscopic binary nature of six southern Cepheids
We present the analysis of photometric and spectroscopic data of six bright
Galactic Cepheids: GH Carinae, V419 Centauri, V898 Centauri, AD Puppis, AY
Sagittarii, and ST Velorum. Based on new radial velocity data (in some cases
supplemented with earlier data available in the literature), these Cepheids
have been found to be members in spectroscopic binary systems. V898 Cen turned
out to have one of the largest orbital radial velocity amplitude (> 40 km/s)
among the known binary Cepheids. The data are insufficient to determine the
orbital periods nor other orbital elements for these new spectroscopic
binaries.
These discoveries corroborate the statement on the high frequency of
occurrence of binaries among the classical Cepheids, a fact to be taken into
account when calibrating the period-luminosity relationship for Cepheids.
We have also compiled all available photometric data that revealed that the
pulsation period of AD Pup, the longest period Cepheid in this sample, is
continuously increasing with Delta P = 0.004567 d/century, likely to be caused
by stellar evolution. The wave-like pattern superimposed on the parabolic O-C
graph of AD Pup may well be caused by the light-time effect in the binary
system. ST Vel also pulsates with a continuously increasing period. The other
four Cepheids are characterised with stable pulsation periods in the last half
