Parity violating pion electroproduction off the nucleon

    Get PDF
Parity violating (PV) contributions due to interference between γ\gamma and Z0Z^0 exchange are calculated for pion electroproduction off the nucleon. A phenomenological model with effective Lagrangians is used to determine the resulting asymmetry for the energy region between threshold and Δ(1232)\Delta(1232) resonance. The Δ\Delta resonance is treated as a Rarita-Schwinger field with phenomenological NΔN \Delta transition currents. The background contributions are given by the usual Born terms using the pseudovector πN\pi N Lagrangian. Numerical results for the asymmetry are presented.Comment: 17 pages, RevTeX, 6 figures (in separate file figs.uu), uses epsf, accepted for publication in Z. Phys.

    Aspects of Nucleon Compton Scattering

We consider the spin-averaged nucleon forward Compton scattering amplitude in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory including all terms to order O(q4){\cal O} (q^4). The chiral prediction for the spin-averaged forward Compton scattering amplitude is in good agreement with the data for photon energies ω110\omega \le 110 MeV. We also evaluate the nucleon electric and magnetic Compton polarizabilities to this order and discuss the uncertainties of the various counter terms entering the chiral expansion of these quantities.Comment: 17 pp, TeX, 7 figures available from the authors, preprint CRN-93/5

Effective Lagrangian Approach to the Theory of Eta Photoproduction in the N(1535)N^{*}(1535) Region

We investigate eta photoproduction in the N(1535)N^{*}(1535) resonance region within the effective Lagrangian approach (ELA), wherein leading contributions to the amplitude at the tree level are taken into account. These include the nucleon Born terms and the leading tt-channel vector meson exchanges as the non-resonant pieces. In addition, we consider five resonance contributions in the ss- and uu- channel; besides the dominant N(1535)N^{*}(1535), these are: N(1440),N(1520),N(1650)N^{*}(1440),N^{*}(1520),N^{*}(1650) and N(1710)N^{*}(1710). The amplitudes for the π\pi^\circ and the η\eta photoproduction near threshold have significant differences, even as they share common contributions, such as those of the nucleon Born terms. Among these differences, the contribution to the η\eta photoproduction of the ss-channel excitation of the N(1535)N^{*}(1535) is the most significant. We find the off-shell properties of the spin-3/2 resonances to be important in determining the background contributions. Fitting our effective amplitude to the available data base allows us to extract the quantity χΓηA1/2/ΓT\sqrt{\chi \Gamma_\eta} A_{1/2}/\Gamma_T, characteristic of the photoexcitation of the N(1535)N^{*}(1535) resonance and its decay into the η\eta-nucleon channel, of interest to precise tests of hadron models. At the photon point, we determine it to be (2.2±0.2)×101GeV1(2.2\pm 0.2)\times 10^{-1} GeV^{-1} from the old data base, and (2.2±0.1)×101GeV1(2.2\pm 0.1) \times 10^{-1} GeV^{-1} from a combination of old data base and new Bates data. We obtain the helicity amplitude for N(1535)γpN^{*}(1535)\rightarrow \gamma p to be A1/2=(97±7)×103GeV1/2A_{1/2}=(97\pm 7)\times 10^{-3} GeV^{-1/2} from the old data base, and A1/2=(97±6)×103GeV1/2A_{1/2}=(97\pm 6)\times 10^{-3} GeV^{-1/2} from the combination of the old data base and new Bates data, compared with the results of the analysis of pion photoproduction yielding 74±1174\pm 11, in the same units.Comment: 43 pages, RevTeX, 9 figures available upon request, to appear in Phys. Vector meson production and nucleon resonance analysis in a coupled-channel approach for energies m_N < sqrt(s) < 2 GeV I: pion-induced results and hadronic parameters

We present a nucleon resonance analysis by simultaneously considering all pion- and photon-induced experimental data on the final states gamma N, pi N, 2 pi N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma, and omega N for energies from the nucleon mass up to sqrt(s) = 2 GeV. In this analysis we find strong evidence for the resonances P_{31}(1750), P_{13}(1900), P_{33}(1920), and D_{13}(1950). The omega N production mechanism is dominated by large P_{11}(1710) and P_{13}(1900) contributions. In this first part, we present the results of the pion-induced reactions and the extracted resonance and background properties with emphasis on the difference between global and purely hadronic fits.Comment: 54 pages, 26 figures, discussion extended, typos corrected, references updated, to appear in Phys. Squark-, Slepton- and Neutralino-Chargino coannihilation effects in the low-energy effective MSSM

    Get PDF
Within the low-energy effective Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (effMSSM) we calculate the neutralino relic density taking into account slepton-neutralino, squark-neutralino and neutralino/chargino- neutralino coannihilation channels. By including squark (stop and sbottom) coannihilation channels we extend our comparative study to all allowed coannihilations and obtain the general result that all of them give sizable contributions to the reduction of the neutralino relic density. Due to these coannihilation processes some models (mostly with large neutralino masses) enter into the cosmologically interesting region for relic density, but other models leave this region. Nevertheless, in general, the predictions for direct and indirect dark matter detection rates are not strongly affected by these coannihilation channels in the effMSSM.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, corrected and to be published in Phys. Standard Model baryogenesis through four-fermion operators in braneworlds

    Get PDF
We study a new baryogenesis scenario in a class of braneworld models with low fundamental scale, which typically have difficulty with baryogenesis. The scenario is characterized by its minimal nature: the field content is that of the Standard Model and all interactions consistent with the gauge symmetry are admitted. Baryon number is violated via a dimension-6 proton decay operator, suppressed today by the mechanism of quark-lepton separation in extra dimensions; we assume that this operator was unsuppressed in the early Universe due to a time-dependent quark-lepton separation. The source of CP violation is the CKM matrix, in combination with the dimension-6 operators. We find that almost independently of cosmology, sufficient baryogenesis is nearly impossible in such a scenario if the fundamental scale is above 100 TeV, as required by an unsuppressed neutron-antineutron oscillation operator. The only exception producing sufficient baryon asymmetry is a scenario involving out-of-equilibrium c quarks interacting with equilibrium b quarks.Comment: 39 pages, 5 figures v2: typos, presentational changes, references and acknowledgments adde

Probing the MSSM Higgs Boson Sector with Explicit CP Violation through Third Generation Fermion Pair Production at Muon Colliders

We perform a systematic study of the production of a third-generation fermion-pair, μ+μffˉ\mu^+\mu^-\to f\bar{f} for f=τ,bf=\tau^-,b, and t in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with explicit CP violation, which is induced radiatively by soft trilinear interactions related to squarks of the third generation. We classify all the observables for probing the CP property of the Higgs bosons constructed by the initial muon beam polarization along with the unpolarized final fermions and with the final-fermion polarization configuration of equal helicity, respectively. The observables allow for complete determination of CP property of the neutral Higgs bosons. The interference between the Higgs boson and gauge boson contributions also could provide a powerful method for the determination of the CP property of two heavy Higgs bosons in the top-quark pair production near the energy region of the Higgs-boson resonances. For the lightest Higgs-boson mass there is no sizable interference between scalar and vector contributions for the determination of the CP property of the lightest Higgs boson. We give a detailed numerical analysis to show how the radiatively-induced CP violation in the Higgs sector of the MSSM can be measured.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures including 5 eps ones. Proton-proton bremsstrahlung below and above pion-threshold: the influence of the Δ\Delta-isobar

The proton-proton bremsstrahlung is investigated within a coupled-channel model with the Δ\Delta degree of freedom. The model is consistent with the NNNN scattering up to 1 GeV and the γNΔ\gamma N\Delta vertex determined in the study of pion photoproduction reactions. It is found that the Δ\Delta excitation can significantly improve the agreements with the ppppγpp \rightarrow pp\gamma at Elab=280E_{lab}=280 MeV. Predictions at Elab=550E_{lab}=550 and 800800 MeV are presented for future experimental tests.Comment: 26 pages Revtex, 12 figures are available from the authors upon request ([email protected]

Neutral weak currents in pion electroproduction on the nucleon

Parity violating asymmetry in inclusive scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons by unpolarized protons with π0\pi^0 or π+\pi^+ meson production, is calculated as a function of the momentum transfer squared Q2Q^2 and the total energy WW of the πN\pi N-system. This asymmetry, which is induced by the interference of the one-photon exchange amplitude with the parity-odd part of the Z0Z^0-exchange amplitude, is calculated for the γ(Z)+pN+π\gamma^*(Z^*)+p\to N+\pi processes (γ\gamma^* is a virtual photon and ZZ^* a virtual Z-boson) considering the Δ\Delta-contribution in the ss-channel, the standard Born contributions and vector meson (ρ\rho and ω\omega) exchanges in the tt-channel. Taking into account the known isotopic properties of the hadron electromagnetic and neutral currents, we show that the P-odd term is the sum of two contributions. The main term is model independent and it can be calculated exactly in terms of fundamental constants. It is found to be linear in Q2Q^2. The second term is a relatively small correction which is determined by the isoscalar component of the electromagnetic current. Near threshold and in the Δ\Delta-region, this isoscalar part is much smaller (in absolute value) than the isovector one: its contribution to the asymmetry depend on the polarization state (longitudinal or transverse) of the virtual photon.Comment: 30 pages 9 figure
