Sub-diffraction light propagation in fibers with anisotropic dielectric cores
We present a detailed study of light propagation in waveguides with
anisotropic metamaterial cores. We demonstrate that in contrast to conventional
optical fibers, our structures support free-space-like propagating modes even
when the waveguide radius is much smaller than the wavelength. We develop
analytical formalism to describe mode structure and propagation in strongly
anisotropic systems and study the effects related to waveguide boundaries and
material composition
Shock waves in strongly coupled plasmas
Shock waves are supersonic disturbances propagating in a fluid and giving
rise to dissipation and drag. Weak shocks, i.e., those of small amplitude, can
be well described within the hydrodynamic approximation. On the other hand,
strong shocks are discontinuous within hydrodynamics and therefore probe the
microscopics of the theory. In this paper we consider the case of the strongly
coupled N=4 plasma whose microscopic description, applicable for scales smaller
than the inverse temperature, is given in terms of gravity in an asymptotically
space. In the gravity approximation, weak and strong shocks should be
described by smooth metrics with no discontinuities. For weak shocks we find
the dual metric in a derivative expansion and for strong shocks we use
linearized gravity to find the exponential tail that determines the width of
the shock. In particular we find that, when the velocity of the fluid relative
to the shock approaches the speed of light the penetration depth
scales as . We compare the results with second
order hydrodynamics and the Israel-Stewart approximation. Although they all
agree in the hydrodynamic regime of weak shocks, we show that there is not even
qualitative agreement for strong shocks. For the gravity side, the existence of
shock waves implies that there are disturbances of constant shape propagating

The Precursors and Products of Justice Climates: Group Leader Antecedents and Employee Attitudinal Consequences
Drawing on the organizational justice, organizational climate, leadership and personality, and social comparison theory literatures, we develop hypotheses about the effects of leader personality on the development of three types of justice climates (e.g., procedural, interpersonal, and informational), and the moderating effects of these climates on individual level justice- attitude relationships. Largely consistent with the theoretically-derived hypotheses, the results showed that leader (a) agreeableness was positively related to procedural, interpersonal and informational justice climates, (b) conscientiousness was positively related to a procedural justice climate, and (c) neuroticism was negatively related to all three types of justice climates. Further, consistent with social comparison theory, multilevel data analyses revealed that the relationship between individual justice perceptions and job attitudes (e.g., job satisfaction, commitment) was moderated by justice climate such that the relationships were stronger when justice climate was high
Bjorken Flow, Plasma Instabilities, and Thermalization
At asymptotically high energies, thermalization in heavy ion collisions can
be described via weak-coupling QCD. We present a complete treatment of how
thermalization proceeds, at the parametric weak-coupling level. We show that
plasma instabilities dominate the dynamics, from immediately after the
collision until well after the plasma becomes nearly in equilibrium. Initially
they drive the system close to isotropy, but Bjorken expansion and increasing
diluteness makes the system again become more anisotropic. At time \tau ~
\alpha^(-12/5) Q^(-1) the dynamics become dominated by a nearly-thermal bath;
and at time \tau ~ \alpha^(-5/2) Q^(-1)$ the bath comes to dominate the energy
density, completing thermalization. After this time there is a nearly isotropic

Childhood loneliness as a predictor of adolescent depressive symptoms: an 8-year longitudinal study
Childhood loneliness is characterised by children’s perceived dissatisfaction with aspects of their social relationships. This 8-year prospective study investigates whether loneliness in childhood predicts depressive symptoms in adolescence, controlling for early childhood indicators of emotional problems and a sociometric measure of peer social preference. 296 children were tested in the infant years of primary school (T1 5 years of age), in the upper primary school (T2 9 years of age) and in secondary school (T3 13 years of age). At T1, children completed the loneliness assessment and sociometric interview. Their teachers completed externalisation and internalisation rating scales for each child. At T2, children completed a loneliness assessment, a measure of depressive symptoms, and the sociometric interview. At T3, children completed the depressive symptom assessment. An SEM analysis showed that depressive symptoms in early adolescence (age 13) were predicted by reports of depressive symptoms at age 8, which were themselves predicted by internalisation in the infant school (5 years). The interactive effect of loneliness at 5 and 9, indicative of prolonged loneliness in childhood, also predicted depressive symptoms at age 13. Parent and peer-related loneliness at age 5 and 9, peer acceptance variables, and duration of parent loneliness did not predict depression. Our results suggest that enduring peer-related loneliness during childhood constitutes an interpersonal stressor that predisposes children to adolescent depressive symptoms. Non-perturbative computation of double inclusive gluon production in the Glasma
The near-side ridge observed in A+A collisions at RHIC has been described as
arising from the radial flow of Glasma flux tubes formed at very early times in
the collisions. We investigate the viability of this scenario by performing a
non-perturbative numerical computation of double inclusive gluon production in
the Glasma. Our results support the conjecture that the range of transverse
color screening of correlations determining the size of the flux tubes is a
semi-hard scale, albeit with non-trivial structure. We discuss our results in

Long-Range Rapidity Correlations in Heavy Ion Collisions at Strong Coupling from AdS/CFT
We use AdS/CFT correspondence to study two-particle correlations in heavy ion
collisions at strong coupling. Modeling the colliding heavy ions by shock waves
on the gravity side, we observe that at early times after the collision there
are long-range rapidity correlations present in the two-point functions for the
glueball and the energy-momentum tensor operators. We estimate rapidity
correlations at later times by assuming that the evolution of the system is
governed by ideal Bjorken hydrodynamics, and find that glueball correlations in
this state are suppressed at large rapidity intervals, suggesting that
late-time medium dynamics can not "wash out" the long-range rapidity
correlations that were formed at early times. These results may provide an
insight on the nature of the "ridge" correlations observed in heavy ion

Population Genetics of Franciscana Dolphins (Pontoporia blainvillei): Introducing a New Population from the Southern Edge of Their Distribution
Due to anthropogenic factors, the franciscana dolphin, Pontoporia blainvillei, is the most threatened small cetacean on the Atlantic coast of South America. Four Franciscana Management Areas have been proposed: Espiritu Santo to Rio de Janeiro (FMA I), São Paulo to Santa Catarina (FMA II), Rio Grande do Sul to Uruguay (FMA III), and Argentina (FMA IV). Further genetic studies distinguished additional populations within these FMAs. We analyzed the population structure, phylogeography, and demographic history in the southernmost portion of the species range. From the analysis of mitochondrial DNA control region sequences, 5 novel haplotypes were found, totalizing 60 haplotypes for the entire distribution range. The haplotype network did not show an apparent phylogeographical signal for the southern FMAs. Two populations were identified: Monte Hermoso (MH) and Necochea (NC)+Claromecó (CL)+Río Negro (RN). The low levels of genetic variability, the relative constant size over time, and the low levels of gene flow may indicate that MH has been colonized by a few maternal lineages and became isolated from geographically close populations. The apparent increase in NC+CL+RN size would be consistent with the higher genetic variability found, since genetic diversity is generally higher in older and expanding populations. Additionally, RN may have experienced a recent split from CL and NC; current high levels of gene flow may be occurring between the latter ones. FMA IV would comprise four franciscana dolphin populations: Samborombón West+Samborombón South, Cabo San Antonio+Buenos Aires East, NC+CL+Buenos Aires Southwest+RN and MH. Results achieved in this study need to be taken into account in order to ensure the long-term survival of the species.Fil: Gariboldi, María Constanza. Lifshitz spacetimes from AdS null and cosmological solutions
We describe solutions of 10-dimensional supergravity comprising null
deformations of with a scalar field, which have
Lifshitz symmetries. The bulk Lifshitz geometry in 3+1-dimensions arises by
dimensional reduction of these solutions. The dual field theory in this case is
a deformation of the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We discuss the holographic
2-point function of operators dual to bulk scalars. We further describe
time-dependent (cosmological) solutions which have anisotropic Lifshitz scaling
symmetries. We also discuss deformations of in 11-dimensional
supergravity, which are somewhat similar to the solutions above. In some cases
here, we expect the field theory duals to be deformations of the Chern-Simons
