Introduction to the AdS/CFT correspondence
This is a pedagogical introduction to the AdS/CFT correspondence, based on
lectures delivered by the author at the third IDPASC school. Starting with the
conceptual basis of the holographic dualities, the subject is developed
emphasizing some concrete topics, which are discussed in detail. A very brief
introduction to string theory is provided, containing the minimal ingredients
to understand the origin of the AdS/CFT duality. Other topics covered are the
holographic calculation of correlation functions, quark-antiquark potentials

Incorporation of stochastic chemistry on dust grains in the PDR code using moment equations
Unlike gas-phase reactions, chemical reactions taking place on interstellar
dust grain surfaces cannot always be modeled by rate equations. Due to the
small grain sizes and low flux,these reactions may exhibit large fluctuations
and thus require stochastic methods such as the moment equations.
We evaluate the formation rates of H2, HD and D2 molecules on dust grain
surfaces and their abundances in the gas phase under interstellar conditions.
We incorporate the moment equations into the Meudon PDR code and compare the
results with those obtained from the rate equations. We find that within the
experimental constraints on the energy barriers for diffusion and desorption
and for the density of adsorption sites on the grain surface, H2, HD and D2
molecules can be formed efficiently on dust grains.
Under a broad range of conditions, the moment equation results coincide with
those obtained from the rate equations. However, in a range of relatively high
grain temperatures, there are significant deviations. In this range, the rate
equations fail while the moment equations provide accurate results. The
incorporation of the moment equations into the PDR code can be extended to
other reactions taking place on grain surfaces
Associated Absorption Lines in the Radio-Loud Quasar 3C 351: Far-Ultraviolet Echelle Spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope
As one of the most luminous radio-loud quasars showing intrinsic ultraviolet
(UV) and X-ray absorption, 3C 351 provides a laboratory for studying the
kinematics and physical conditions of such ionized absorbers. We present an
analysis of the intrinsic absorption lines in the high-resolution ( 7
km/s) far-UV spectrum which was obtained from observations with the Space
Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope
(HST). The spectrum spans wavelengths from 1150 \AA to 1710 \AA, and shows
strong emission lines from O VI and Ly. Associated absorption lines are
present on the blue wings of the high-ionization emission doublets O VI
1032,1038 and N V 1238,1242, as well as the
Lyman lines through Ly. These intrinsic absorption features are
resolved into several distinct kinematic components, covering rest-frame
velocities from -40 to -2800 km/s, with respect to the systemic redshift of
. For the majority of these absorption line regions, strong
evidence of partial covering of both the background continuum source and the
BELR is found, which supports the intrinsic absorption origin and rules out the
possibility that the absorption arises in some associated cluster of galaxies.
The relationship between the far-UV absorbers and X-ray `warm' absorbers are
studied with the assistance of photoionization models. Most of the UV
associated absorption components have low values of the ionization parameter
and total hydrogen column densities, which is inconsistent with previous claims
that the UV and X-ray absorption arises in the same material. Analysis of these
components supports a picture with a wide range of ionization parameters,

How does reviewing the evidence change veterinary surgeons' beliefs regarding the treatment of ovine footrot? A quantitative and qualitative study
Footrot is a widespread, infectious cause of lameness in sheep, with major economic and welfare costs. The aims of this research were: (i) to quantify how veterinary surgeons’ beliefs regarding the efficacy of two treatments for footrot changed following a review of the evidence (ii) to obtain a consensus opinion following group discussions (iii) to capture complementary qualitative data to place their beliefs within a broader clinical context. Grounded in a Bayesian statistical framework, probabilistic elicitation (roulette method) was used to quantify the beliefs of eleven veterinary surgeons during two one-day workshops. There was considerable heterogeneity in veterinary surgeons’ beliefs before they listened to a review of the evidence. After hearing the evidence, seven participants quantifiably changed their beliefs. In particular, two participants who initially believed that foot trimming with topical oxytetracycline was the better treatment, changed to entirely favour systemic and topical oxytetracycline instead. The results suggest that a substantial amount of the variation in beliefs related to differences in veterinary surgeons’ knowledge of the evidence. Although considerable differences in opinion still remained after the evidence review, with several participants having non-overlapping 95% credible intervals, both groups did achieve a consensus opinion. Two key findings from the qualitative data were: (i) veterinary surgeons believed that farmers are unlikely to actively seek advice on lameness, suggesting a proactive veterinary approach is required (ii) more attention could be given to improving the way in which veterinary advice is delivered to farmers. In summary this study has: (i) demonstrated a practical method for probabilistically quantifying how veterinary surgeons’ beliefs change (ii) revealed that the evidence that currently exists is capable of changing veterinary opinion (iii) suggested that improved transfer of research knowledge into veterinary practice is needed (iv) identified some potential obstacles to the implementation of veterinary advice by farmers
The universal cover of an algebra without double bypass
Let A be a basic finite dimensional and connected algebra over an
algebraically closed field k with zero characteristic. If the ordinary quiver
of A has no double bypasses, we show that A admits a Galois covering which

Antitumor Effects of Clinical Dosing Regimens of Bisphosphonates in Experimental Breast Cancer Bone Metastasis
Background Bisphosphonates exhibit direct antitumor activity in animal models, but only at high doses that are incompatible with the clinical dosing regimens approved for the treatment of cancer patients with skeletal metastases. We compared the antitumor effects of clinical dosing regimens of the bisphosphonates zoledronic acid and clodronate in a mouse model of bone metastasis. Methods Mice (n = 6-10 per group) were treated with zoledronic acid, clodronate, or vehicle starting before (preventive protocols) or after (treatment protocols) intravenous injection with human B02/GFP.2 breast cancer cells, which express green fluorescent protein (GFP) and luciferase and metastasize to bone. Zoledronic acid was given as daily, weekly, or single doses at a cumulative dose of 98-100 μg/kg body weight, equivalent to the 4-mg intravenous dose given to patients. Clodronate was given as a daily dose (530 μg/kg/day), equivalent to the daily 1600-mg oral clinical dose given to patients. Bone destruction was measured by radiography, x-ray absorptiometry or tomography, and histomorphometry (as the ratio of bone volume to tissue volume). Skeletal tumor burden was measured by histomorphometry (as the ratio of tumor burden to soft tissue volume [TB/STV]) and luciferase activity. All statistical tests were two-sided. Results In treatment protocols, daily clodronate was less effective at decreasing the TB/STV ratio than daily (53% versus 87%, difference = 34%, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 16% to 44%, P<.001) or weekly (53% versus 90%, difference = 37%, 95% CI = 19% to 46%, P<.001) zoledronic acid-dosing regimens. Compared with vehicle, a single dose of zoledronic acid decreased tumor burden by only 16% (95% CI = 9% to 22%, P<.001). In preventive protocols, daily clodronate and daily or weekly zoledronic acid decreased the TB/STV ratio by 49% (95% CI = 40% to 57%, P = .006), 83% (95% CI = 68% to 98%, P<.001), and 66% (95% CI = 47% to 84%, P<.001), respectively, compared with vehicle, whereas a single dose of zoledronic acid decreased tumor burden by only 13% (95% CI = −2% to 28%, P = .84). Mice treated with a daily preventive regimen of clodronate or with a daily or weekly preventive regimen of zoledronic acid showed a decreased B02/GFP.2 cell tumor burden compared with vehicle, whereas a single preventive dose of zoledronic acid had no effect. State resolved rotational excitation cross sections and rates in H2+H2 collisions
Rotational transitions in molecular hydrogen collisions are computed. The two
most recently developed potential energy surfaces for the H2-H2 system are used
from the following works: 1) A.I. Boothroyd, P.G. Martin, W.J. Keogh, M.J.
Peterson, J. Chem. Phys., 116 (2002) 666, and 2) P. Diep, J.K. Johnson, J.
Chem. Phys., 113 (2000) 3480; ibid. 112, 4465. Cross sections for rotational
transitions 00->20, 22, 40, 42, 44 and corresponding rate coefficients are
calculated using a quantum-mechanical approach. Results are compared for a wide
