Challenges in Collaborative HRI for Remote Robot Teams
Collaboration between human supervisors and remote teams of robots is highly
challenging, particularly in high-stakes, distant, hazardous locations, such as
off-shore energy platforms. In order for these teams of robots to truly be
beneficial, they need to be trusted to operate autonomously, performing tasks
such as inspection and emergency response, thus reducing the number of
personnel placed in harm's way. As remote robots are generally trusted less
than robots in close-proximity, we present a solution to instil trust in the
operator through a `mediator robot' that can exhibit social skills, alongside
sophisticated visualisation techniques. In this position paper, we present
general challenges and then take a closer look at one challenge in particular,
discussing an initial study, which investigates the relationship between the
level of control the supervisor hands over to the mediator robot and how this
affects their trust. We show that the supervisor is more likely to have higher
trust overall if their initial experience involves handing over control of the
emergency situation to the robotic assistant. We discuss this result, here, as
well as other challenges and interaction techniques for human-robot

WEBT multiwavelength monitoring and XMM-Newton observations of BL Lacertae in 2007-2008. Unveiling different emission components
In 2007-2008 we carried out a new multiwavelength campaign of the Whole Earth
Blazar Telescope (WEBT) on BL Lacertae, involving three pointings by the
XMM-Newton satellite, to study its emission properties. The source was
monitored in the optical-to-radio bands by 37 telescopes. The brightness level
was relatively low. Some episodes of very fast variability were detected in the
optical bands. The X-ray spectra are well fitted by a power law with photon
index of about 2 and photoelectric absorption exceeding the Galactic value.
However, when taking into account the presence of a molecular cloud on the line
of sight, the data are best fitted by a double power law, implying a concave
X-ray spectrum. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) built with
simultaneous radio-to-X-ray data at the epochs of the XMM-Newton observations
suggest that the peak of the synchrotron emission lies in the near-IR band, and
show a prominent UV excess, besides a slight soft-X-ray excess. A comparison
with the SEDs corresponding to previous observations with X-ray satellites
shows that the X-ray spectrum is extremely variable. We ascribe the UV excess
to thermal emission from the accretion disc, and the other broad-band spectral
features to the presence of two synchrotron components, with their related SSC
emission. We fit the thermal emission with a black body law and the non-thermal
components by means of a helical jet model. The fit indicates a disc
temperature greater than 20000 K and a luminosity greater than 6 x 10^44 erg/s.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Catalog of Galactic Beta Cephei Stars
We present an extensive and up-to-date catalog of Galactic Beta Cephei stars.
This catalog is intended to give a comprehensive overview of observational
characteristics of all known Beta Cephei stars. 93 stars could be confirmed to
be Beta Cephei stars. For some stars we re-analyzed published data or conducted
our own analyses. 61 stars were rejected from the final Beta Cephei list, and
77 stars are suspected to be Beta Cephei stars. A list of critically selected
pulsation frequencies for confirmed Beta Cephei stars is also presented. We
analyze the Beta Cephei stars as a group, such as the distributions of their
spectral types, projected rotational velocities, radial velocities, pulsation
periods, and Galactic coordinates. We confirm that the majority of these stars
are multiperiodic pulsators. We show that, besides two exceptions, the Beta
Cephei stars with high pulsation amplitudes are slow rotators. We construct a
theoretical HR diagram that suggests that almost all 93 Beta Cephei stars are
MS objects. We discuss the observational boundaries of Beta Cephei pulsation
and their physical parameters. We corroborate that the excited pulsation modes
are near to the radial fundamental mode in frequency and we show that the mass
distribution of the stars peaks at 12 solar masses. We point out that the
theoretical instability strip of the Beta Cephei stars is filled neither at the
cool nor at the hot end and attempt to explain this observation

Identification of red high proper-motion objects in Tycho-2 and 2MASS catalogues using Virtual Observatory tools
Aims: With available Virtual Observatory tools, we looked for new M dwarfs in
the solar neighbourhood and M giants with high tangential velocities. Methods:
From an all-sky cross-match between the optical Tycho-2 and the near-infrared
2MASS catalogues, we selected objects with proper motions >50mas/yr and very
red V-Ks colours. For the most interesting targets, we collected
multi-wavelength photometry, constructed spectral energy distributions,
estimated effective temperatures and surface gravities from fits to atmospheric
models, performed time-series analysis of ASAS V-band light curves, and
assigned spectral types from low-resolution spectroscopy obtained with CAFOS at
the 2.2m Calar Alto telescope. Results: We got a sample of 59 bright red high
proper-motion objects, including fifty red giants, four red dwarfs, and five
objects reported in this work for the first time. The five new stars have
magnitudes V~10.8-11.3mag, reduced proper motions midway between known dwarfs
and giants, near-infrared colours typical of giants, and effective temperatures
Teff~2900-3400K. From our time-series analysis, we discovered a long secondary
period in Ruber 4 and an extremely long primary period in Ruber 6. With the
CAFOS spectra, we confirmed the red giant nature of Ruber 7 and 8, the last of
which seems to be one of the brightest metal-poor M giants ever identified.Comment: Accepted in Astronomy & Astrophysic
Neoadjuvant cisplatin and fluorouracil versus epirubicin, cisplatin, and capecitabine followed by resection in patients with oesophageal adenocarcinoma (UK MRC OE05): an open-label, randomised phase 3 trial.
BACKGROUND: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy before surgery improves survival compared with surgery alone for patients with oesophageal cancer. The OE05 trial assessed whether increasing the duration and intensity of neoadjuvant chemotherapy further improved survival compared with the current standard regimen. METHODS: OE05 was an open-label, phase 3, randomised clinical trial. Patients with surgically resectable oesophageal adenocarcinoma classified as stage cT1N1, cT2N1, cT3N0/N1, or cT4N0/N1 were recruited from 72 UK hospitals. Eligibility criteria included WHO performance status 0 or 1, adequate respiratory, cardiac, and liver function, white blood cell count at least 3 × 10(9) cells per L, platelet count at least 100 × 10(9) platelets per L, and a glomerular filtration rate at least 60 mL/min. Participants were randomly allocated (1:1) using a computerised minimisation program with a random element and stratified by centre and tumour stage, to receive two cycles of cisplatin and fluorouracil (CF; two 3-weekly cycles of cisplatin [80 mg/m(2) intravenously on day 1] and fluorouracil [1 g/m(2) per day intravenously on days 1-4]) or four cycles of epirubicin, cisplatin, and capecitabine (ECX; four 3-weekly cycles of epirubicin [50 mg/m(2)] and cisplatin [60 mg/m(2)] intravenously on day 1, and capecitabine [1250 mg/m(2)] daily throughout the four cycles) before surgery, stratified according to centre and clinical disease stage. Neither patients nor study staff were masked to treatment allocation. Two-phase oesophagectomy with two-field (abdomen and thorax) lymphadenectomy was done within 4-6 weeks of completion of chemotherapy. The primary outcome measure was overall survival, and primary and safety analyses were done in the intention-to-treat population. This trial is registered with the ISRCTN registry (number 01852072) and ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT00041262), and is completed. FINDINGS: Between Jan 13, 2005, and Oct 31, 2011, 897 patients were recruited and 451 were assigned to the CF group and 446 to the ECX group. By Nov 14, 2016, 327 (73%) of 451 patients in the CF group and 302 (68%) of 446 in the ECX group had died. Median survival was 23·4 months (95% CI 20·6-26·3) with CF and 26·1 months (22·5-29·7) with ECX (hazard ratio 0·90 (95% CI 0·77-1·05, p=0·19). No unexpected chemotherapy toxicity was seen, and neutropenia was the most commonly reported event (grade 3 or 4 neutropenia: 74 [17%] of 446 patients in the CF group vs 101 [23%] of 441 people in the ECX group). The proportions of patients with postoperative complications (224 [56%] of 398 people for whom data were available in the CF group and 233 [62%] of 374 in the ECX group; p=0·089) were similar between the two groups. One patient in the ECX group died of suspected treatment-related neutropenic sepsis. INTERPRETATION: Four cycles of neoadjuvant ECX compared with two cycles of CF did not increase survival, and cannot be considered standard of care. Our study involved a large number of centres and detailed protocol with comprehensive prospective assessment of health-related quality of life in a patient population confined to people with adenocarcinomas of the oesophagus and gastro-oesophageal junction (Siewert types 1 and 2). Alternative chemotherapy regimens and neoadjuvant chemoradiation are being investigated to improve outcomes for patients with oesophageal carcinoma. Fenites associated with carbonatite complexes : a review

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.Carbonatites and alkaline-silicate rocks are the most important sources of rare earth elements (REE) and niobium (Nb), both of which are metals imperative to technological advancement and associated with high risks of supply interruption. Cooling and crystallizing carbonatitic and alkaline melts expel multiple pulses of alkali-rich aqueous fluids which metasomatize the surrounding country rocks, forming fenites during a process called fenitization. These alkalis and volatiles are original constituents of the magma that are not recorded in the carbonatite rock, and therefore fenites should not be dismissed during the description of a carbonatite system. This paper reviews the existing literature, focusing on 17 worldwide carbonatite complexes whose attributes are used to discuss the main features and processes of fenitization. Although many attempts have been made in the literature to categorize and name fenites, it is recommended that the IUGS metamorphic nomenclature be used to describe predominant mineralogy and textures. Complexing anions greatly enhance the solubility of REE and Nb in these fenitizing fluids, mobilizing them into the surrounding country rock, and precipitating REE- and Nb-enriched micro-mineral assemblages. As such, fenites have significant potential to be used as an exploration tool to find mineralized intrusions in a similar way alteration patterns are used in other ore systems, such as porphyry copper deposits. Strong trends have been identified between the presence of more complex veining textures, mineralogy and brecciation in fenites with intermediate stage Nb-enriched and later stage REE enriched magmas. However, compiling this evidence has also highlighted large gaps in the literature relating to fenitization. Funerary practices or food delicatessen? Human remains with anthropic marks from the Western Mediterranean Mesolithic
The identification of unarticulated human remains with anthropic marks in archaeological contexts normally involves solving two issues: a general one associated with the analysis and description of the anthropic manipulation marks, and another with regard to the interpretation of their purpose. In this paper we present new evidence of anthropophagic behaviour amongst hunter-gatherer groups of the Mediterranean Mesolithic. A total of 30 human remains with anthropic manipulation marks have been found in the Mesolithic layers of Coves de Santa Maira (Castell de Castells, Alicante, Spain), dating from ca. 10.2-9 cal ky BP. We describe the different marks identified on both human and faunal remains at the site (lithic, tooth, percussion and fire marks on bone cortex). As well as describing these marks, and considering that both human and faunal remains at the site present similar depositional and taphonomic features, this paper also contextualizes them within the archaeological context and subsistence patterns described for Mesolithic groups in the region. We cannot entirely rule out the possibility that these practices may be the result of periodic food stress suffered by the human populations. These anthropophagic events at the site coincide with a cultural change at the regional Epipalaeolithic-Mesolithic transition
Visualising COVID-19 Research
The world has seen in 2020 an unprecedented global outbreak of SARS-CoV-2, a
new strain of coronavirus, causing the COVID-19 pandemic, and radically
changing our lives and work conditions. Many scientists are working tirelessly
to find a treatment and a possible vaccine. Furthermore, governments,
scientific institutions and companies are acting quickly to make resources
available, including funds and the opening of large-volume data repositories,
to accelerate innovation and discovery aimed at solving this pandemic. In this
paper, we develop a novel automated theme-based visualisation method, combining
advanced data modelling of large corpora, information mapping and trend
analysis, to provide a top-down and bottom-up browsing and search interface for
quick discovery of topics and research resources. We apply this method on two
recently released publications datasets (Dimensions' COVID-19 dataset and the
Allen Institute for AI's CORD-19). The results reveal intriguing information
including increased efforts in topics such as social distancing; cross-domain
initiatives (e.g. mental health and education); evolving research in medical
topics; and the unfolding trajectory of the virus in different territories
through publications. The results also demonstrate the need to quickly and
automatically enable search and browsing of large corpora. We believe our
methodology will improve future large volume visualisation and discovery
systems but also hope our visualisation interfaces will currently aid
scientists, researchers, and the general public to tackle the numerous issues
