Initial POLAR MFE observation of substorm signatures in the polar magnetosphere
This paper studies substorm influences in the polar magnetosphere using data from the POLAR magnetic field experiment (MFE). The POLAR spacecraft remains in the high altitude polar magnetosphere for extended periods around apogee. There it can stay at nearly constant altitude through all phases of a substorm, which was not possible on previous missions. We report such an event on March 28, 1996. Ground magnetometers monitored substorm activity, while the POLAR spacecraft, directly over the pole at (−0.8, −0.6, 8.5) RE in GSM coordinates, observed a corresponding perturbation in the total magnetic field strength. The total magnetic field first increased, then recovered toward quiet levels, consistent with erosion of magnetic flux from the dayside magnetosphere, followed by transport of that flux to the magnetotail, and eventual onset of tail reconnection and the return of that magnetic flux to the dayside magnetosphere
Direct observation of molecular cooperativity near the glass transition
We describe direct observations of molecular cooperativity near the glass
transition in poly-vinyl-acetate (PVAc), through nanometer-scale probing of
dielectric fluctuations. Molecular clusters switched spontaneously between two
to four distinct configurations, producing complex random-telegraph-signals
(RTS). Analysis of the RTS and their power spectra shows that individual
clusters exhibit both transient dynamical heterogeneity and non-exponential

Optical Nanofibers: a new platform for quantum optics
The development of optical nanofibers (ONF) and the study and control of
their optical properties when coupling atoms to their electromagnetic modes has
opened new possibilities for their use in quantum optics and quantum
information science. These ONFs offer tight optical mode confinement (less than
the wavelength of light) and diffraction-free propagation. The small cross
section of the transverse field allows probing of linear and non-linear
spectroscopic features of atoms with exquisitely low power. The cooperativity
-- the figure of merit in many quantum optics and quantum information systems
-- tends to be large even for a single atom in the mode of an ONF, as it is
proportional to the ratio of the atomic cross section to the electromagnetic
mode cross section. ONFs offer a natural bus for information and for
inter-atomic coupling through the tightly-confined modes, which opens the
possibility of one-dimensional many-body physics and interesting quantum
interconnection applications. The presence of the ONF modifies the vacuum
field, affecting the spontaneous emission rates of atoms in its vicinity. The
high gradients in the radial intensity naturally provide the potential for
trapping atoms around the ONF, allowing the creation of one-dimensional arrays
of atoms. The same radial gradient in the transverse direction of the field is
responsible for the existence of a large longitudinal component that introduces
the possibility of spin-orbit coupling of the light and the atom, enabling the

On the missing 2175 Angstroem-bump in the Calzetti extinction curve
The aim of the paper is to give a physical explanation of the absence of the
feature in the Calzetti extinction curve. We analyze the dust attenuation of a
homogeneous source seen through a distant inhomogeneous distant screen. The
inhomogeneities are described through an idealized isothermal turbulent medium
where the probability distribution function (PDF) of the column density is
log-normal. In addition it is assumed that below a certain critical column
density the carriers of the extinction bump at 2175 Angstroem are being
destroyed by the ambient UV radiation field. Turbulence is found to be a
natural explanation not only of the flatter curvature of the Calzetti
extinction curve but also of the missing bump provided the critical column
density is N_H >= 10^21 cm^-2. The density contrast needed to explain both
characteristics is well consistent with the Mach number of the cold neutral
medium of our own Galaxy which suggests a density contrast sigma_(rho/) 6.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures accepted for publication in A&A, section
‘Never testing for HIV’ among Men who have Sex with Men in Viet Nam: results from an internet-based cross-sectional survey

Men who have sex with men in Viet Nam have been under-studied as a high-risk group for HIV infection, and this population’s percentage and determinants of HIV testing have not been comprehensively investigated.
Methods
A national Internet-based survey of self-reported sexual and health seeking behaviours was conducted between August and October 2011 with 2077 Vietnamese men who had sex with men in the last twelve months to identify the frequency of ‘never testing for HIV’ among Internet-using MSM living in Viet Nam, as well as the factors associated with this HIV-related high-rish behavior. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the demographic characteristics and behaviours predicting never testing for HIV.
Results
A total of 76.5% of men who have sex with men who were surveyed reported never having been voluntarily tested for HIV. Predictors of never being tested included having a monthly income less than VND 5 Million, being a student, using the Internet less than 15 hour per week, and not participating in a behavioural HIV intervention.
Conclusions
Never testing for HIV is common among Internet-using men who have sex with men in Viet Nam. Given the dangerously high prevalence of this high-risk behaviour, our findings underscore the urgent need for segmented and targeted HIV prevention, care and treatment strategies, focusing on drastically reducing the number of men who have sex with men never testing for HIV in Viet Nam
The contamination of the surface of Vesta by impacts and the delivery of the dark material
The Dawn spacecraft observed the presence of dark material, which in turn
proved to be associated with OH and H-rich material, on the surface of Vesta.
The source of this dark material has been identified with the low albedo
asteroids, but it is still a matter of debate whether the delivery of the dark
material is associated with a few large impact events, to micrometeorites or to
the continuous, secular flux of impactors on Vesta. The continuous flux
scenario predicts that a significant fraction of the exogenous material
accreted by Vesta should be due to non-dark impactors likely analogous to
ordinary chondrites, which instead represent only a minor contaminant in the
HED meteorites. We explored the continuous flux scenario and its implications
for the composition of the vestan regolith, taking advantage of the data from
the Dawn mission and the HED meteorites. We used our model to show that the
stochastic events scenario and the micrometeoritic flux scenario are natural
consequences of the continuous flux scenario. We then used the model to
estimate the amounts of dark and hydroxylate materials delivered on Vesta since
the LHB and we showed how our results match well with the values estimated by
the Dawn mission. We used our model to assess the amount of Fe and siderophile
elements that the continuous flux of impactors would mix in the vestan
regolith: concerning the siderophile elements, we focused our attention on the
role of Ni. The results are in agreement with the data available on the Fe and
Ni content of the HED meteorites and can be used as a reference frame in future
studies of the data from the Dawn mission and of the HED meteorites. Our model
cannot yet provide an answer to the fate of the missing non-carbonaceous

The cutoff method for the numerical computation of nonnegative solutions of parabolic PDEs with application to anisotropic diffusion and lubrication-type equations
The cutoff method, which cuts off the values of a function less than a given
number, is studied for the numerical computation of nonnegative solutions of
parabolic partial differential equations. A convergence analysis is given for a
broad class of finite difference methods combined with cutoff for linear
parabolic equations. Two applications are investigated, linear anisotropic
diffusion problems satisfying the setting of the convergence analysis and
nonlinear lubrication-type equations for which it is unclear if the convergence
analysis applies. The numerical results are shown to be consistent with the
theory and in good agreement with existing results in the literature. The
convergence analysis and applications demonstrate that the cutoff method is an
effective tool for use in the computation of nonnegative solutions. Cutoff can
also be used with other discretization methods such as collocation, finite
volume, finite element, and spectral methods and for the computation of
