We formulate a self-consistent field theory for polyelectrolyte brushes in
the presence of counterions. We numerically solve the self-consistent field
equations and study the monomer density profile, the distribution of
counterions, and the total charge distribution. We study the scaling relations
for the brush height and compare them to the prediction of other theories. We
find a weak dependence of the brush height on the grafting density.We fit the
counterion distribution outside the brush by the Gouy-Chapman solution for a
virtual charged wall. We calculate the amount of counterions outside the brush
and find that it saturates as the charge of the polyelectrolytes increases
CP asymmetry in B→ϕKS in a general two-Higgs-doublet model with fourth-generation quarks

We discuss the time-dependent CP asymmetry of decay B→ϕKS in an
extension of the Standard Model with both two Higgs doublets and additional
fourth-generation quarks. We show that although the Standard Model with
two-Higgs-doublet and the Standard model with fourth generation quarks alone
are not likely to largely change the effective sin2β from the decay of
B→ϕKS, the model with both additional Higgs doublet and
fourth-generation quarks can easily account for the possible large negative
value of sin2β without conflicting with other experimental
constraints. In this model, additional large CP violating effects may arise
from the flavor changing Yukawa interactions between neutral Higgs bosons and
the heavy fourth generation down type quark, which can modify the QCD penguin
contributions. With the constraints obtained from b→ssˉs processes
such as B→Xsγ and ΔmBs0, this model can lead to the
effective sin2β to be as large as −0.4 in the CP asymmetry of B→ϕKS.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, references added, to appear in Eur.Phys.J.

- Field of study
Soft photons inside hadronic jets converted in front of the DELPHI main
tracker (TPC) in events of qqbar disintegrations of the Z^0 were studied in the
kinematic range 0.2 < E_gamma < 1 GeV and transverse momentum with respect to
the closest jet direction p_T < 80 MeV/c. A clear excess of photons in the
experimental data as compared to the Monte Carlo predictions is observed. This
excess (uncorrected for the photon detection efficiency) is (1.17 +/- 0.06 +/-
0.27) x 10^{-3} gamma/jet in the specified kinematic region, while the expected
level of the inner hadronic bremsstrahlung (which is not included in the Monte
Carlo) is (0.340 +/- 0.001 +/- 0.038) x 10^{-3} gamma/jet. The ratio of the
excess to the predicted bremsstrahlung rate is then (3.4 +/- 0.2 +/- 0.8),
which is similar in strength to the anomalous soft photon signal observed in

We calculate s dependence of Cronin momentum for p+A and A+A
collisions in saturation model. We show that this dependence is consistent with
expectation from formula which was obtained using simple dimentional
consideration. This can be used to test validity of saturation model (and
distinguish among its variants) and measure x dependence of saturation

- Field of study
The tau lepton lifetime has been measured with the e+e- -> tau+tau- events
collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP in the years 1991-1995. Three different
methods have been exploited, using both one-prong and three-prong tau decay
channels. Two measurements have been made using events in which both taus decay
to a single charged particle. Combining these measurements gave tau_tau (1
prong) = 291.8 +/- 2.3 (stat) +/- 1.5 (sys) fs. A third measurement using taus
which decayed to three charged particles yielded tau_tau (3 prong) = 288.6 +/-
2.4 (stat) +/- 1.3 (sys) fs. These were combined with previous DELPHI results
to measure the tau lifetime, using the full LEP1 data sample, to be tau_tau =
290.9 +/- 1.4 (stat) +/- 1.0 (sys) fs.Comment: 27 pages, 7 figure

Weak isosinglet Neutral Heavy Leptons (νm) have been searched for using data collected by the DELPHI detector corresponding to 3.3×106 hadronic~Z0 decays at LEP1. Four separate searches have been performed, for short-lived νm production giving monojet or acollinear jet topologies, and for long-lived νm giving detectable secondary vertices or calorimeter clusters. No indication of the existence of these particles has been found, leading to an upper limit for the branching ratio BR(Z0→νmν) of about 1.3×10−6 at 95\% confidence level for νm masses between 3.5 and 50 GeV/c2. Outside this range the limit weakens rapidly with the νm mass. %Special emphasis has been given to the search for monojet--like topologies. One event %has passed the selection, in agreement with the expectation from the reaction: %e+e−→ℓℓˉννˉ. The results are also interpreted in terms of limits for the single production of excited neutrinos

Three jet events arising from decays of the Z boson, collected by the DELPHI detector, were used to measure differences in quark and gluon fragmentation. Gluon jets were anti-tagged by identifying b quark jets. Unbiased quark jets came from events with two jets plus one photon. Quark and gluon jet properties in different energy ranges were compared for the first time within the same detector. Quark and gluon jets of nearly the same energy in symmetric three jet event topologies were also compared. Using three independent methods, the average value of the ratio of the mean charged multiplicities of gluon and quark jets is =1.241±0.015 (stat.)±0.025 (syst.). Gluon jets are broader and produce fragments with a softer energy spectrum than quark jets of equivalent energy. The string effect has been observed in fully symmetric three jet events. The measured ratio R_{\gamma} of the charged particle flow in the q\overline{q} inter-jet region of the q\bar{q}g and q\bar{q}\gamma samples agrees with the perturbative QCD expectation. The dependence of the mean charged multiplicity on the hadronic center-of-mass energy was analysed in photon plus n-jet events. The value for \alpha_s(M_Z) determined from these data using a QCD prediction with corrections at leading and next-to-leading order is \[ \alpha_s(M_Z)=0.116 \pm 0.003\ (stat.) \pm 0.009\ (syst.). \
