[Review of] John L. Hodge, Donald K. Struckmann, and Lynn Dorland Trost, Cultural Bases of Racism and Group Oppression: An Examination of Traditional Western Concepts, Values, and Institutional Structures which Support Racism, Sexism and Elitism

Dualism, a concept that simply tends to view the world in terms of “either-or” categories rather than “both . . . and,” has been examined and analyzed as the primary contributor to and cause of Western domination. The dangers of dualistic thinking are, according to Hodge et al., habit forming and unconscious. The Western practitioners of such thinking trace their ideology to the ancient Greek philosophers whose ideas support and reinforce existing oppressive patterns

    The Mariner Jupiter/Saturn photopolarimeter experiment

Observations of Saturn's rings by the Mariner Jupiter/Saturn photopolarimeter are studied. From these observations attempts were made to: (1) determine the size, shape, albedo, distribution, and orientation of particles in the rings, (2) measure geometric and optical thickness of the rings, and (3) determine the effect of Saturn's satellites on dynamics of ring particles. Special attention was given to stellar and solar occulation measurements, surface brightness photometry, and phase angle dependence of intensity and polarization

[Review of] Raymond L. Hall. Black Separatism in the United States

A startling look at black separatist movements of the past reveals interesting facts that parallel the rise and fall of the contemporary organizations with separatist ideologies. The author focuses on the period from 1960 to 1972, analyzing five black social movement organizations: The Nation of Islam/Black Muslims, The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), the Student Non-Violent (later National) Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Black Panther Party, and the Republic of New Africa (RNA)

Designing Costumes for \u3cem\u3eVolpone\u3c/em\u3e by Ben Jonson

This poster presentation showcases my unrealized designs for Volpone by Ben Jonson, completed for the Linfield College Theatre Program’s Costume Design course taught by Laurel Peterson during the 2016 fall semester. The play focuses on Volpone, an old miser who delights in tricking wealthy acquaintances by pretending to be an invalid and attaining more money in doing so. Along with Volpone (meaning fox in Italian), many of the other characters have names pertaining to specific animals such as Mosca (the fly), Voltore (the vulture), and Peregrine. These names point to unflattering personality traits and make it easier for the audience to understand Ben Jonson’s social commentary about European society in 1605. My design concept combined animalistic or classic characterizations of the characters’ personalities with a Victorian Venetian setting. In keeping with the dark undertones and somewhat Dickensian plot of the play, I chose to set it during a time strife with poverty, greedy merchants, constraining gender norms, and strict social morals unheeded by those who dared. In my costume designs, I adhered closely to the early Victorian period while also trying to convey the true nature of each character whether good or evil

Extracting Additional Information From Biotic Index Samples

Macroinvertebrates were collected from a small midwestern stream over a 3-year period as part of a non-point source pollution study. Temporal and spatial variability in standard biotic index values (BIs) were computed and compared with variability expressed by a series of additional community measurements, including the mean tolerance value of all taxa present in a sample, irrespective of the numerical abundance of individual taxa. The mean tolerance value exhibited lower spatial and temporal variability than the standard BI; therefore, mean tolerance values may be useful in estimating a stream\u27s long-term ambient water quality and its recovery potential. Computations of additional BI metrics are easily accomplished with no additional lab work required, and comparisons of mean tolerance values with standard BIs should aid investigators in interpreting changes in water quality

New and Additional Distribution Records for Several Rare Mayflies (Ephemeroptera) in Wisconsin

One nymph and one exuviae of Acanthametropus pecatonica were collected in June 1991 from the Black River and Chippewa River, respectively. These specimens extend the known range of this rare species in Wisconsin to three large Mississippi River tributaries. Homoeoneuria ammophila was recorded in Wisconsin for the first time; nymphs were collected from the Black River and Sugar River. Nymphs of Macdunnoa persimplex, Metretopus borealis, Pentagenia vittigera, Pseudiron centralis, and Cercobrachys sp. were also encountered
