Economic Impact of a Rotavirus Vaccine in Brazil
The study was done to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of a national
rotavirus vaccination programme in Brazilian children from the
healthcare system perspective. A hypothetical annual birth-cohort was
followed for a five-year period. Published and national administrative
data were incorporated into a model to quantify the consequences of
vaccination versus no vaccination. Main outcome measures included the
reduction in disease burden, lives saved, and disability-adjusted
life-years (DALYs) averted. A rotavirus vaccinationprogramme in Brazil
would prevent an estimated 1,804 deaths associated with gastroenteritis
due to rotavirus, 91,127 hospitalizations, and 550,198 outpatient
visits. Vaccination is likely to reduce 76% of the overall healthcare
burden of rotavirus-associated gastroenteritis in Brazil. At a vaccine
price of US
643 per DALY averted. Rotavirus vaccination can reduce the burden of
gastroenteritis due to rotavirus at a reasonable cost-effectiveness
ratio
Influence of scrotal bipartition on spermatogenesis yield and sertoli cell efficiency in sheep
Abstract With the objective to assess the effect of scrotal bipartition on spermatogenesis in sheep, the testes were used from 12 crossbred rams of sheep farms in the municipality of Patos, Paraíba, Brazil, distributed into two groups: GI with six rams with scrotal bipartition, and GII with six rams without scrotal bipartition. The testicular biometry was measured and the testes were collected, fixed in Bouin and fragments were processed to obtain histological slides. The spermatogenesis yield and the Sertoli cell efficiency was estimated by counting the cells of the spermatogenetic line at stage one of the seminiferous epithelium cycle and the Sertoli cells. The results were submitted to analysis of variance with the ASSISTAT v.7.6 program and the mean values were compared by the Student-Newman-Keuls test (SNK) at 5% significance. The testicular biometric parameters did not show statistical difference (p>0.05) between the groups. The meiotic, spermatogenetic and Sertoli cell efficiency were higher in bipartitioned rams (p0.05) between GI and GII. The results indicated that there is superiority in the spermatogenetic parameters of bi-partitioned rams, suggesting that these sheep present, as reported in goats, indication of better reproductive indices
Identification of inappropriate prescribing in a Brazilian nursing home using STOPP/START screening tools and the Beers' Criteria
The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of Potentially Inappropriate Medication (PIM) use and associated factors, as well as the prevalence of Prescribing Omissions (PO). A cross-sectional study was conducted in a philanthropic Brazilian nursing home involving 46 individuals aged 60 years or older. The following information was collected from medical records and drug prescriptions: gender, age, health conditions and drugs used in the past thirty days. PIM and PO were identified according to the Beers' Criteria and the STOPP/START screening tools. Over one third (37%) of the population used at least one PIM according to the Beers' Criteria (n=17) and 60.9% according to the STOPP tool. A significant association was found between polypharmacy (use of five or more drugs) and use of PIM according to the Beers' Criteria, but not according to the STOPP. Eight residents (17.4%) were exposed to eight PO. This study allowed the diagnosis of a concerning drug utilization profile with use of a high number of PIMs. Thus, there is an evident need to implement strategies for improving geriatric prescription

Revision and cladistics of the Neotropical genus Pseudoptilolepis Snyder (Diptera, Muscidae) Revisão e cladística do gênero neotropical Pseudoptilolepis Snyder (Diptera, Muscidae)
Pseudoptilolepis Snyder, 1949, a monophyletic Neotropical muscid genus of six species, is reviewed to include four new species, P. centralis sp. nov., P. chrysella sp. nov., P. crocina sp. nov. and P. elbida sp. nov. A taxonomic key is provided for the genus. The phylogenetic relationship among the studied species is: (P. centralis ((P. chrysella (P. fluminensis, P. fulvapoda)) (P. nudapleura (P. elbida (P. nigripoda, P. crocina))))). The geographic distribution of the species is also presented and briefly discussed.<br>O gênero Neotropical monofilético Pseudoptilolepis Snyder, 1949 é revisado para a inclusão de quatro espécies novas, P. centralis sp. nov., P. chrysella sp. nov., P. crocina sp. nov. and P. elbida sp. nov. Uma chave taxonômica para o gênero é fornecida. A relação filogenética entre as espécies estudadas é: (P. centralis ((P. chrysella (P. fluminensis, P. fulvapoda)) (P. nudapleura (P. elbida (P. nigripoda, P. crocina))))). A distribuição geográfica das espécies é também apresentada e brevemente discutida
