GENFIRE: A generalized Fourier iterative reconstruction algorithm for high-resolution 3D imaging
Tomography has made a radical impact on diverse fields ranging from the study
of 3D atomic arrangements in matter to the study of human health in medicine.
Despite its very diverse applications, the core of tomography remains the same,
that is, a mathematical method must be implemented to reconstruct the 3D
structure of an object from a number of 2D projections. In many scientific
applications, however, the number of projections that can be measured is
limited due to geometric constraints, tolerable radiation dose and/or
acquisition speed. Thus it becomes an important problem to obtain the
best-possible reconstruction from a limited number of projections. Here, we
present the mathematical implementation of a tomographic algorithm, termed
GENeralized Fourier Iterative REconstruction (GENFIRE). By iterating between
real and reciprocal space, GENFIRE searches for a global solution that is
concurrently consistent with the measured data and general physical
constraints. The algorithm requires minimal human intervention and also
incorporates angular refinement to reduce the tilt angle error. We demonstrate
that GENFIRE can produce superior results relative to several other popular
tomographic reconstruction techniques by numerical simulations, and by
experimentally by reconstructing the 3D structure of a porous material and a
frozen-hydrated marine cyanobacterium. Equipped with a graphical user
interface, GENFIRE is freely available from our website and is expected to find

Mopra line survey mapping of NGC6334I and I(N) at 3mm
A 5'x5' region encompassing NGC6334I and I(N) has been mapped at a wavelength
of 3mm (from 83.5 to 115.5GHz) with the Mopra telescope at an angular
resolution between 33 arcsec and 36 arcsec. This investigation has made use of
the recently installed 3mm MMIC receiver and the Mopra Spectrometer (MOPS) with
broadband capabilities permitting total coverage of the entire frequency range
with just five different observations. In total, the spatial distribution of
nineteen different molecules, ions and radicals, along with additional selected
isotopologues have been studied. Whilst most species trace the sites of star
formation, CH_3CN appears to be most closely associated with NGC6334I and I(N).
Both CN and C_2H appear to be widespread, tracing gas that is not associated
with active star formation. Both N_2H^+ and HC_3N closely resemble dust
continuum emission, showing they are reliable tracers of dense material, as
well as the youngest stages of high mass star formation. Hot (E_u/k>100K)
thermal CH_3OH emission is preferentially found towards NGC6334I, contrasting
with I(N), where only cold (E_u/k<22K) thermal CH_3OH emission is found.Comment: Accepted by MNRA
Suppressive soil against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum as a source of potential biocontrol agents: selection and evaluation of Clonostachys rosea BAFC1646
The fungal diversity structures of soils that are suppressive and non-suppressive to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum were characterised and screened for fungal strains antagonistic to the S. sclerotiorum pathogen. Soil suppressiveness was associated with a particular fungal diversity structure. Principal component analysis showed that antagonism by fungal species in suppressive soils was associated with the occurrence of Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium solani, Talaromyces flavus var. flavus and Clonostachys rosea f. rosea. In particular, C. rosea f. rosea occurred exclusively in suppressive soil samples, suggesting that this morpho-species plays an important role in suppression of S. sclerotiorum diseases. One strain of C. rosea f. rosea (BAFC1646) was selected for further experiments. Dual-culture assays confirmed the antagonistic behaviour of C. rosea f. rosea BAFC1646 against three different S. sclerotiorum strains. Antifungal activity was corroborated by diffusion assays with metabolite extracts. Greenhouse assays with soybean plants showed that the selected C. rosea f. rosea strain reduced the percentage of dead plants when co-inoculated with S. sclerotiorum. In addition, inclusion of C. rosea f. rosea alone increased shoot lengths significantly. In this work, we established the involvement of fungal species in soil suppressiveness and in further assays confirmed that C. rosea f. rosea BAFC1646 exhibits a bioprotective effect against S. sclerotiorum in soybean plants.Fil: Rodriguez, Maria Alejandra. High-velocity-resolution observations of OH main line lasers in the M82 starburst
Using the VLA, a series of high velocity resolution observations have been
made of the M82 starburst at 1.6 GHz. These observations follow up on previous
studies of the main line OH maser emission in the central kiloparsec of this
starburst region, but with far greater velocity resolution, showing significant
velocity structure in some of the maser spots for the first time. A total of
thirteen masers were detected, including all but one of the previously known
sources. While some of these masers are still unresolved in velocity, these new
results clearly show velocity structure in spectra from several of the maser
regions. Position-velocity plots show good agreement with the distribution of
H{\sc i} including interesting velocity structure on the blueward feature in
the west of the starburst which traces the velocity distribution seen in the

The ADAMTS (A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase with Thrombospondin motifs) family
The ADAMTS (A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase with Thrombospondin motifs) enzymes are secreted, multi-domain matrix-associated zinc metalloendopeptidases that have diverse roles in tissue morphogenesis and patho-physiological remodeling, in inflammation and in vascular biology. The human family includes 19 members that can be sub-grouped on the basis of their known substrates, namely the aggrecanases or proteoglycanases (ADAMTS1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 15 and 20), the procollagen N-propeptidases (ADAMTS2, 3 and 14), the cartilage oligomeric matrix protein-cleaving enzymes (ADAMTS7 and 12), the von-Willebrand Factor proteinase (ADAMTS13) and a group of orphan enzymes (ADAMTS6, 10, 16, 17, 18 and 19). Control of the structure and function of the extracellular matrix (ECM) is a central theme of the biology of the ADAMTS, as exemplified by the actions of the procollagen-N-propeptidases in collagen fibril assembly and of the aggrecanases in the cleavage or modification of ECM proteoglycans. Defects in certain family members give rise to inherited genetic disorders, while the aberrant expression or function of others is associated with arthritis, cancer and cardiovascular disease. In particular, ADAMTS4 and 5 have emerged as therapeutic targets in arthritis. Multiple ADAMTSs from different sub-groupings exert either positive or negative effects on tumorigenesis and metastasis, with both metalloproteinase-dependent and -independent actions known to occur. The basic ADAMTS structure comprises a metalloproteinase catalytic domain and a carboxy-terminal ancillary domain, the latter determining substrate specificity and the localization of the protease and its interaction partners; ancillary domains probably also have independent biological functions. Focusing primarily on the aggrecanases and proteoglycanases, this review provides a perspective on the evolution of the ADAMTS family, their links with developmental and disease mechanisms, and key questions for the future
Mapping photodissociation and shocks in the vicinity of Sgr A*
We have obtained maps of the molecular emission within the central five
arcminutes (12 pc) of the Galactic center (GC) in selected molecular tracers:
SiO(2-1), HNCO(5_{0,5}-4_{0,4}), and the J=1-->0 transition of H^{13}CO+,
HN^{13}C, and C^{18}O at an angular resolution of 30" (1.2 pc). The mapped
region includes the circumnuclear disk (CND) and the two surrounding giant
molecular clouds (GMCs) of the Sgr A complex, known as the 20 and 50 km s^{-1}
molecular clouds.Additionally, we simultaneously observed the J=2-1 and 3-2
transitions of SiO toward selected positions to estimate the physical
conditions of the molecular gas. The SiO(2-1) and H^{13}CO+(1-0) emission
covers the same velocity range and presents a similar distribution. In
contrast, HNCO(5-4) emission appears in a narrow velocity range mostly
concentrated in the 20 and 50 km s^{-1} GMCs. The HNCO column densities and
fractional abundances present the highest contrast, with difference factors of
60 and 28, respectively. Their highest values are found toward the cores
of the GMCs, whereas the lowest ones are measured at the CND. SiO abundances do
not follow this trend, with high values found toward the CND, as well as the
GMCs. By comparing our abundances with those of prototypical Galactic sources
we conclude that HNCO, similar to SiO, is ejected from grain mantles into
gas-phase by nondissociative C-shocks. This results in the high abundances
measured toward the CND and the GMCs. However, the strong UV radiation from the
Central cluster utterly photodissociates HNCO as we get closer to the center,
whereas SiO seems to be more resistant against UV-photons or it is produced
more efficiently by the strong shocks in the CND. Finally, we discuss the
possible connections between the molecular gas at the CND and the GMCs using
the HNCO/SiO, SiO/CS, and HNCO/CS intensity ratios as probes of distance to the

The effects of low doses of pregabalin on morphine analgesia in advanced cancer patients
Abstract
OBJECTIVES:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the opioid response in patients receiving morphine and pregabalin, independently from the presumed pain mechanisms, in comparison with patients receiving morphine treatment only.
METHODS:
A multicenter prospective randomized controlled study was carried out in a sample of 70 advanced cancer patients with pain requiring strong opioids. Thirty-five patients (group MO) were randomized to receive sustained-release morphine using initial doses of 60 mg/day. Thirty-five patients (group MO-PR) were randomized to start the same morphine doses and pregabalin in increasing doses, starting with 25 mg/day up to 150 mg/day in one week. The following data were also recorded before starting the treatments (T0) and then at week intervals for four weeks (W1-4): age, gender, primary cancer and known metastases, pain causes and mechanisms, symptoms associated with opioid therapy, pain intensity, Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), morphine doses and escalation indexes (OEIs), and quality of life.
RESULTS:
Forty-eight patients completed the study, twenty-eight and sixteen patients in group MO and MO-PR, respectively. Twenty patients were females, the mean age was 65.5 (± 10.3), and the mean Karnofsky status was 66.0 (± 18.9). No differences between groups were found in age (P = 0.839), Karnofsky status (P = 0.741), opioid doses as well as escalation indexes (OEI mg, P = 0.260, and OEI%, P = 0.270). No differences between the two groups were found in quality of life and all BPI items.
CONCLUSION:
The use of low doses of pregabalin added to morphine therapy in advanced cancer patients does not seem to provide advantageous analgesic effects, despite limitations of the present study due to the number of drop-outs

HIV RNA, CD4+ Percentage, and Risk of Hepatocellular Carcinoma by Cirrhosis Status.
BackgroundDespite increasing incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) among HIV-infected patients, it remains unclear if HIV-related factors contribute to development of HCC. We examined if higher or prolonged HIV viremia and lower CD4+ cell percentage were associated with HCC.MethodsWe conducted a cohort study of HIV-infected individuals who had HIV RNA, CD4+, and CD8+ cell counts and percentages assessed in the Veterans Aging Cohort Study (1999-2015). HCC was ascertained using Veterans Health Administration cancer registries and electronic records. Cox regression was used to determine hazard ratios (HR, 95% confidence interval [CI]) of HCC associated with higher current HIV RNA, longer duration of detectable HIV viremia (≥500 copies/mL), and current CD4+ cell percentage less than 14%, adjusting for traditional HCC risk factors. Analyses were stratified by previously validated diagnoses of cirrhosis prior to start of follow-up.ResultsAmong 35 659 HIV-infected patients, 302 (0.8%) developed HCC over 281 441 person-years (incidence rate = 107.3 per 100 000 person-years). Among patients without baseline cirrhosis, higher HIV RNA (HR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.12 to 1.40, per 1.0 log10 copies/mL) and 12 or more months of detectable HIV (HR = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.02 to 2.11) were independently associated with higher risk of HCC. CD4+ percentage less than 14% was not associated with HCC in any model. Hepatitis C coinfection was a statistically significant predictor of HCC regardless of baseline cirrhosis status.ConclusionAmong HIV-infected patients without baseline cirrhosis, higher HIV RNA and longer duration of HIV viremia increased risk of HCC, independent of traditional HCC risk factors. This is the strongest evidence to date that HIV viremia contributes to risk of HCC in this group
Calibration of the Logarithmic-Periodic Dipole Antenna (LPDA) Radio Stations at the Pierre Auger Observatory using an Octocopter
An in-situ calibration of a logarithmic periodic dipole antenna with a
frequency coverage of 30 MHz to 80 MHz is performed. Such antennas are part of
a radio station system used for detection of cosmic ray induced air showers at
the Engineering Radio Array of the Pierre Auger Observatory, the so-called
Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA). The directional and frequency
characteristics of the broadband antenna are investigated using a remotely
piloted aircraft (RPA) carrying a small transmitting antenna. The antenna
sensitivity is described by the vector effective length relating the measured
voltage with the electric-field components perpendicular to the incoming signal
direction. The horizontal and meridional components are determined with an
overall uncertainty of 7.4^{+0.9}_{-0.3} % and 10.3^{+2.8}_{-1.7} %
respectively. The measurement is used to correct a simulated response of the
frequency and directional response of the antenna. In addition, the influence
of the ground conductivity and permittivity on the antenna response is
simulated. Both have a negligible influence given the ground conditions
measured at the detector site. The overall uncertainties of the vector
effective length components result in an uncertainty of 8.8^{+2.1}_{-1.3} % in
the square root of the energy fluence for incoming signal directions with
