Closing the Loophole: A Case Study of Organizing for More Equitable and Affordable Access to Health Care in San Francisco
This paper presents in-depth case study of a successful hybrid political and community organizing campaign to ensure equitable access to health care through the perspective of a grassroots San Francisco community-based organization, the Chinese Progressive Association (CPA), which has been organizing low-income Chinese immigrants for over four decades. First, it outlines the Health Care Security Ordinance (HCSO), which, since its passage in 2006, has established a near-universal health care access program, helping to make health care accessible and affordable to individuals living and working in San Francisco. Then it presents the campaign to save the HCSO, focusing on CPA’s participation in the HCSO coalition. Finally, it discusses health care as it relates to the San Francisco’s affordability crisis and the political economic context in which it is taking place. Despite the limitations inherent in small case studies like this one, it nevertheless provides a valuable opportunity to better understand how one politically progressive city attempted to address the problem of grossly inequitable health care access through the lens of community organizing, advocacy, and coalition building. San Francisco, like many major American cities today, is being confronted with rapid gentrification and growing economic inequality—the backdrop to the HCSO. Through innovative experiments in social responsibility like the HCSO, however, the city has made leaps in health care access. It concludes with lessons learned from local organizing and advocacy to save the HCSO as these may inform other local efforts to promote health care for all

The H-alpha Luminosity Function and Star Formation Rate Volume Density at z=0.8 from the NEWFIRM H-alpha Survey
[Abridged] We present new measurements of the H-alpha luminosity function
(LF) and SFR volume density for galaxies at z~0.8. Our analysis is based on
1.18m narrowband data from the NEWFIRM H-alpha Survey, a comprehensive
program designed to capture deep samples of intermediate redshift emission-line
galaxies using narrowband imaging in the near-infrared. The combination of
depth ( erg s cm in H-alpha at
3) and areal coverage (0.82 deg) complements other recent H-alpha
studies at similar redshifts, and enables us to minimize the impact of cosmic
variance and place robust constraints on the shape of the LF. The present
sample contains 818 NB118 excess objects, 394 of which are selected as H-alpha
emitters. Optical spectroscopy has been obtained for 62% of the NB118 excess
objects. Empirical optical broadband color classification is used to sort the
remainder of the sample. A comparison of the LFs constructed for the four
individual fields reveals significant cosmic variance, emphasizing that
multiple, widely separated observations are required. The dust-corrected LF is
well-described by a Schechter function with L*=10^{43.00\pm0.52} ergs s^{-1},
\phi*=10^{-3.20\pm0.54} Mpc^{-3}, and \alpha=-1.6\pm0.19. We compare our
H-alpha LF and SFR density to those at z<1, and find a rise in the SFR density
\propto(1+z)^{3.4}, which we attribute to significant L* evolution. Our H-alpha
SFR density of 10^{-1.00\pm0.18} M_sun yr^{-1} Mpc^{-3} is consistent with UV
and [O II] measurements at z~1. We discuss how these results compare to other
H-alpha surveys at z~0.8, and find that the different methods used to determine
survey completeness can lead to inconsistent results. This suggests that future
surveys probing fainter luminosities are needed, and more rigorous methods of

Investigating Interactions of Biomembranes and Alcohols: A Multiscale Approach
We study the interaction of lipid bilayers with short chain alcohols using
molecular dynamics on different length scales. We use detailed atomistic
modeling and modeling on the length scale where an alcohol is just an
amphiphilic dimer. Our strategy is to calibrate a coarse--grained model against
the detailed model at selected state points at low alcohol concentration and
then perform a wider range of simulations using the coarse--grained model. We
get semiquantitative agreement with experiment for the major observables such
as order parameter and area per molecule. We find a linear increase of area per
molecule with alcohol concentration. The alcohol molecules in both system
descriptions are in close contact with the glycerol backbone. Butanol molecules
can enter the bilayer to some extent in contrast to the behavior of shorter
alcohols. At very high alcohol concentrations we find clearly increased
interdigitation between leaflets.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure

The role of EGFR double minutes in modulating the response of malignant gliomas to radiotherapy.
EGFR amplification in cells having double minute chromosomes (DM) is commonly found in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM); however, how much it contributes to the current failure to treat GBM successfully is unknown. We studied two syngeneic primary cultures derived from a GBM with and without cells carrying DM, for their differential molecular and metabolic profiles, in vivo growth patterns, and responses to irradiation (IR). Each cell line has a distinct molecular profile consistent with an invasive "go" (with DM) or angiogenic "grow" phenotype (without DM) demonstrated in vitro and in intracranial xenograft models. Cells with DM were relatively radio-resistant and used higher glycolytic respiration and lower oxidative phosphorylation in comparison to cells without them. The DM-containing cell was able to restore tumor heterogeneity by mis-segregation of the DM-chromosomes, giving rise to cell subpopulations without them. As a response to IR, DM-containing cells switched their respiration from glycolic metabolism to oxidative phosphorylation and shifted molecular profiles towards that of cells without DM. Irradiated cells with DM showed the capacity to alter their extracellular microenvironment to not only promote invasiveness of the surrounding cells, regardless of DM status, but also to create a pro-angiogenic tumor microenvironment. IR of cells without DM was found primarily to increase extracellular MMP2 activity. Overall, our data suggest that the DM-containing cells of GBM are responsible for tumor recurrence due to their high invasiveness and radio-resistance and the mis-segregation of their DM chromosomes, to give rise to fast-growing cells lacking DM chromosomes
Nebular Attenuation in H\alpha-selected Star-forming Galaxies at z=0.8 from the NewH\alpha\ Survey
We present measurements of the dust attenuation of H\alpha-selected
emission-line galaxies at z=0.8 from the NewH\alpha\ narrowband survey. The
analysis is based on deep follow-up spectroscopy with Magellan/IMACS, which
captures the strong rest-frame optical emission lines from [OII] \lambda 3727
to [OIII] \lambda 5007. The spectroscopic sample used in this analysis consists
of 341 confirmed H\alpha\ emitters. We place constraints on the AGN fraction
using diagnostics which can be applied at intermediate redshift. We find that
at least 5% of the objects in our spectroscopic sample can be classified as AGN
and 2% are composite, i.e. powered by a combination of star-formation and AGN
activity. We measure the dust attenuation for individual objects from the
ratios of the higher order Balmer lines. The H\beta\ and H\gamma\ pair of lines
is detected with S/N>5 in 55 individual objects and the H\beta\ and H\delta\
pair is detected in 50 individual objects. We also create stacked spectra to
probe the attenuation in objects without individual detections. The median
attenuation at H\alpha\ based on the objects with individually detected lines
is A(H\alpha)=0.9+-1.0 magnitudes, in good agreement with the attenuation found
in local samples of star-forming galaxies. We find that the z=0.8 galaxies
occupy a similar locus of attenuation as a function of magnitude, mass and SFR
as a comparison sample drawn from the SDSS DR4. Both the results from the
individual z=0.8 galaxies and from the stacked spectra show consistency with
the mass -- attenuation and SFR -- attenuation relations found in the local
Universe, indicating that these relations are also applicable at intermediate
