    The Role of Variations of Central Density Of White Dwarf Progenitors Upon Type Ia Supernovae

    The discovery of the accelerated expansion of the universe using Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) has stimulated a tremendous amount of interest in the use of SNe Type Ia events as standard cosmological candles, and as a probe of the fundamental physics of dark energy. Recent observations of SNe Ia have indicated a significant population difference depending on the host galaxy. These observational findings are consistent with SNe Ia Ni-56 production in star-forming spiral galaxies some 0.1 solar masses higher - and therefore more luminous than in elliptical galaxies. We present recent full-star, 3D simulations of Type Ia supernovae which may help explain the nature of this systematic variation in SNe Ia luminosities, as well as the nature of the Ia explosion mechanism.     GeV Gamma-Ray Sources

    We report on the preliminary extension of our work on cataloging the GeV sky to approximately 7 years of CGRO/EGRET observations with special emphasis on a search for transient sources. The search method and significance levels are presented. Our initial results on 13 possible transients indicate that 3 may be new gamma-ray sources. Sixteen new steady GeV sources are also detected, 3 of which have never been reported as gamma-ray sources

    A framework for the forensic investigation of unstructured email relationship data

    Our continued reliance on email communications ensures that it remains a major source of evidence during a digital investigation. Emails comprise both structured and unstructured data. Structured data provides qualitative information to the forensics examiner and is typically viewed through existing tools. Unstructured data is more complex as it comprises information associated with social networks, such as relationships within the network, identification of key actors and power relations, and there are currently no standardised tools for its forensic analysis. Moreover, email investigations may involve many hundreds of actors and thousands of messages. This paper posits a framework for the forensic investigation of email data. In particular, it focuses on the triage and analysis of unstructured data to identify key actors and relationships within an email network. This paper demonstrates the applicability of the approach by applying relevant stages of the framework to the Enron email corpus. The paper illustrates the advantage of triaging this data to identify (and discount) actors and potential sources of further evidence. It then applies social network analysis techniques to key actors within the data set. This paper posits that visualisation of unstructured data can greatly aid the examiner in their analysis of evidence discovered during an investigation

    A Unified Jet Model of X-Ray Flashes, X-Ray-Rich Gamma-Ray Bursts, and Gamma-Ray Bursts: I. Power-Law-Shaped Universal and Top-Hat-Shaped Variable Opening-Angle Jet Models

    HETE-2 has provided strong evidence that the properties of X-Ray Flashes (XRFs), X-ray-rich GRBs, and GRBs form a continuum, and therefore that these three kinds of bursts are the same phenomenon. A key feature found by HETE-2 is that the density of bursts is roughly constant per logarithmic interval in burst fluence S_E and observed spectral peak energy Ep_obs, and in isotropic-equivalent energy Eiso and rest frame spectral peak energy Epeak. In this paper, we explore a unified jet model of all three kinds of bursts, using population synthesis simulations of the bursts and detailed modeling of the instruments that detect them. We show that both a variable jet opening-angle model in which the emissivity is a constant independent of the angle relative to the jet axis and a universal jet model in which the emissivity is a power-law function of the angle relative to the jet axis can explain the observed properties of GRBs reasonably well. However, if one tries to account for the properties of all three kinds of bursts in a unified picture, the extra degree of freedom available in the variable jet opening-angle model enables it to explain the observations reasonably well while the power-law universal jet model cannot. The variable jet opening-angle model of XRFs, X-ray-rich GRBs, and GRBs implies that the energy Egamma radiated in gamma rays is ~ 100 times less than has been thought, and that most GRBs have very small jet opening angles (~ half a degree). It also implies that there are ~ 10^4 - 10^5 more bursts with very small jet opening angles for every burst that is observable.     Two-dimensional Stokes flow driven by elliptical paddles

    A fast and accurate numerical technique is developed for solving the biharmonic equation in a multiply connected domain, in two dimensions. We apply the technique to the computation of slow viscous flow (Stokes flow) driven by multiple stirring rods. Previously, the technique has been restricted to stirring rods of circular cross section; we show here how the prior method fails for noncircular rods and how it may be adapted to accommodate general rod cross sections, provided only that for each there exists a conformal mapping to a circle. Corresponding simulations of the flow are described, and their stirring properties and energy requirements are discussed briefly.
