Who am I talking with? A face memory for social robots
In order to provide personalized services and to
develop human-like interaction capabilities robots need to rec-
ognize their human partner. Face recognition has been studied
in the past decade exhaustively in the context of security systems
and with significant progress on huge datasets. However, these
capabilities are not in focus when it comes to social interaction
situations. Humans are able to remember people seen for a
short moment in time and apply this knowledge directly in
their engagement in conversation. In order to equip a robot with
capabilities to recall human interlocutors and to provide user-
aware services, we adopt human-human interaction schemes to
propose a face memory on the basis of active appearance models
integrated with the active memory architecture. This paper
presents the concept of the interactive face memory, the applied
recognition algorithms, and their embedding into the robot’s
system architecture. Performance measures are discussed for
general face databases as well as scenario-specific datasets
The present article describes the organisation of the postal system at the Spanish Maestrazgo-region (provinces of Valencia, Castellón, Teruel) established by the insurgents during the last Carlist War in Spain (1872-1876). Beside the aspects of the postal administration it takes in account as well some philatelic ones concerning the use of the stamps supposedly issued there. The study is mainly based on a forgotten carlist post route map and the documents accessible at the archive of The Borbón-Parma family.

An investigation of design principles is conducted for a wireless charging platform that is designed to charge devices of different sizes and technologies, using only through vias. It is shown that at a 5 mm separation distance, a coupling coefficient can be achieved which varies from 0.12 to 0.37 when staggered hexagonal transmitter coils (approximately 5 cm across) are used with an unstaggered square receiver coil, which declines to 0.06–0.11 at 2 cm separation. Without design measures, the coupling coefficient will approach zero at certain positions. The quality factors of the coils can be improved by stacking the coils in parallel, enabling the use of only through-vias, while the inductance can be controlled horizontally by increasing the number of turns in the inductor

PTPN22 regulates NLRP3-mediated IL1B secretion in an autophagy-dependent manner
A variant within the gene locus encoding PTPN22 (protein tyrosine phosphatase, non-receptor type 22) emerged as an important risk factor for auto-inflammatory disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and type 1 diabetes, but at the same time protects from Crohn disease, one of the 2 main forms of inflammatory bowel diseases. We have previously shown that loss of PTPN22 results in decreased NLRP3 (NLR family pyrin domain containing 3) activation and that this effect is mediated via enhanced NLRP3 phosphorylation. However, it is unclear how phosphorylation of NLRP3 mediates its inhibition. Here, we demonstrate that loss of macroautophagy/autophagy abrogates the inhibitory effect on NLRP3 activation observed upon loss of PTPN22. Phosphorylated, but not nonphosphorylated NLRP3 is found in autophagosomes, indicating that NLRP3 phosphorylation mediates its inactivation via promoting sequestration into phagophores, the precursors to autophagosomes. This finding shows that autophagy and NLRP3 inflammasome activation are connected, and that PTPN22 plays a key role in the regulation of those 2 pathways. Given its role in inflammatory disorders, PTPN22 might be an attractive therapeutic target, and understanding the cellular mechanisms modulated by PTPN22 is of crucial importance.</p
Dynamical Casimir Effect in a Designed Leaky Cavity
The phenomenon of particle creation within a resonantly vibrating lossy
cavity is investigated for the example of a massless scalar field at finite
temperature. Leakage is provided by insertion of a dispersive mirror into a
larger ideal cavity. Via the rotating wave approximation we demonstrate that
for the case of parametric resonance the exponential growth of the number of
created particles and the strong enhancement at finite temperatures are
preserved in the presence of reasonable losses. The relevance for experimental
tests of quantum radiation via the dynamical Casimir effect is addressed.Comment: 1 figur
