Praziquantel in clonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis
A single stool examination revealed pathogenic intestinal parasites in 462 (58%) of 796 vietnamese and cambodian refugees. 56 (7.0%) were infected with Clonorchis sinensis and/or Opisthorchis viverrini. These patients received Praziquantel in a dosage of 20 mg/kg bwt. p.day on 3 consecutive days. Parasitological controls were completed after 12 months. No further excretion of eggs could be detected in 88% of the patients. Concurrent infections with other trematodes and cestodes were also cured. Nematode infections remained uninfluenced. No change of haematological and biochemical parameters could be observed during therapy. Diarrhea and epigastric pain were common side effects, which are probably not effects of the drug itself. They rather seem to be due to the release of parasitic antigens. This is also indicated by a further increase of circulating Ig E after therapy

USDA, APHIS, PPQ has distributed the seedhead gall flies Urophora affinis and U. quadrifasciata (Diptera: Tephritidae) as classical biological agents of the introduced weeds spotted and diffuse knapweed (Centaurea maculosa and C. diffusa, respectively) (Asteraceae) in the United States. From 1987 to 1996, Urophora spp. have been released in 97 counties in 14 midwestern and western states. Established populations of U. affinis and U. quadrifasciata are confirmed in 85 and 95 counties, respectively, among all 14 states. These include the first reports of successful establishment of Urophora spp. in Arizona (two counties), Colorado (eight counties), Michigan (one county), Minnesota (six counties), Nebraska (four counties), Nevada (two counties), North Dakota (one county), South Dakota (four counties), Utah (three counties), and Wisconsin (two counties). The first confirmed establishment of U. quadrifasciata in Indiana and Michigan is also reported
X-ray fluoresced high-Z (up to Z = 82) K-x-rays produced by LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 pyroelectric crystal electron accelerators
High-energy bremsstrahlung and K X-rays were used to produce nearly
background-free K X-ray spectra of up to 87 keV (Pb) via X-ray fluorescence.
The fluorescing radiation was produced by electron accelerators, consisting of
heated and cooled cylindrical LiTaO3 and LiNbO3 crystals at mTorr pressures.
The newly discovered process of gas amplification whereby the ambient gas
pressure is optimized to maximize the electron energy was used to produce
energetic electrons which when incident on a W/Bi target gave rise to a
radiation field consisting of high-energy bremsstrahlung as well as W and Bi K

Structure determination of the reconstructed Au(110) surface
The LEED pattern of the Au(110) surface shows a (1 × 2) and also a (1× 3) superstructure. The (1 × 2) superstructure has been determined by comparison of LEED intensities with model calculations. The missing row model is the most probable model. A minimum of the averaged r-factor, , has been found for 15% contraction of the first layer spacing without atomic displacements in the second layer
Polaronic slowing of fermionic impurities in lattice Bose-Fermi mixtures
We generalize the application of small polaron theory to ultracold gases of
Ref. [\onlinecite{jaksch_njp1}] to the case of Bose-Fermi mixtures, where both
components are loaded into an optical lattice. In a suitable range of
parameters, the mixture can be described within a Bogoliubov approach in the
presence of fermionic (dynamic) impurities and an effective description in
terms of polarons applies. In the dilute limit of the slow impurity regime, the
hopping of fermionic particles is exponentially renormalized due to polaron
formation, regardless of the sign of the Bose-Fermi interaction. This should
lead to clear experimental signatures of polaronic effects, once the regime of
interest is reached. The validity of our approach is analyzed in the light of
currently available experiments. We provide results for the hopping
renormalization factor for different values of temperature, density and
Bose-Fermi interaction for three-dimensional
