Cosmological Time Dilation in Durations of Swift Long Gamma-Ray Bursts
Cosmological time dilation is a fundamental phenomenon in an expanding
universe, which stresses that both the duration and wavelength of the emitted
light from a distant object at the redshift will be dilated by a factor of
at the observer. By using a sample of 139 \emph{Swift} long GRBs with
known redshift (), we measure the observed duration () in the
observed energy range between keV and keV,
corresponding to a fixed energy range of 140-350 keV in the rest frame. We
obtain a significant correlation between the duration and the factor ,
i.e., , which is well consistent with that
expected from cosmological time dilation effect.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. Accepted for publication in ApJ
This study is a continuation of the task of validating a paper and pencil test to check whether the student has scientific conceptions about heat, temperature and internal energy in which we are working since 1989. The third version of this instrument is presented here. Previous versions (Silveira, Moreira and Axt, 1990,1991) were modified after an analysis of internal consistency carried out with additional data provided by 168 students of introductory physics at UFRGS. The present version is constituted by 23 items, which might be divided into three groups, each one corresponding to one of the three concepts: heat, temperature and internal energy. This division is based on a logical content analysis as well as on an empirical analysis of students' responses
This study is described correlating the perfomance of engineering students in basically conceptual physics quizzes with their performance in physics exams constituted essentially by problem solving items. Research findings clearly suggest that mastery of concepts in a necessary but not sufficient condition for problem solving
Crystal structure of Pseudomonas aeruginosa lipase in the open conformation - The prototype for family I.1 of bacterial lipases
The x-ray structure of the lipase from Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 has been determined at 2.54 Angstrom resolution. It is the first structure of a member of homology family I.1 of bacterial lipases. The structure shows a variant of the alpha/beta hydrolase fold, with Ser(82), Asp(229), and His(251) as the catalytic triad residues. Compared with the "canonical" alpha/beta hydrolase fold, the first two P-strands and one alpha-helix (alpha E) are not present. The absence of helix alpha E allows the formation of a stabilizing intramolecular disulfide bridge. The loop containing His251 is stabilized by an octahedrally coordinated calcium ion. On top of the active site a lid subdomain is in an open conformation, making the catalytic cleft accessible from the solvent region. A triacylglycerol analogue is covalently bound to Ser(82) in the active site, demonstrating the position of the oxyanion hole and of the three pockets that accommodate the sn-1, sn-2, and sn-3 fatty acid chains. The inhibited enzyme can be thought to mimic the structure of the tetrahedral intermediate that occurs during the acylation step of the reaction. Analysis of the binding mode of the inhibitor suggests that the size of the acyl pocket and the size and interactions of the sn-2 binding pocket are the predominant determinants of the regio- and enantio-preference of the enzyme
Gametogenesis in Madracis decactis Lyman, 1859 (Cnidaria, Scleractinia) from Ilha Grande Bay (Rio de Janeiro), southeastern Brazil
Collections were made every two months in Ilha Grande Bay, Rio de Janeiro, for 21 months (August/2004-May/2006) to study the gametogenesis of Madracis decactis Lyman, 1859. A total of 1800 polyps were examined using standard histological techniques. Madracis decactis is a hermaphroditic species whose male and female gametes develop within different mesenteries. Oogenesis begins in October, while spermatogenesis begins at the end of February, both reaching maturity at the end of April. The peak of reproductive activity occurred between February and April, when all the polyps were fertile, containing mainly stage III oocytes. Examination of fertile polyps indicated the simultaneous presence of stages I, II and III for oogenesis and I, II, III and IV for spermatogenesis. No embryos or planulae were observed in the histological sections.
On the Puzzle of Long and Short Gamma-Ray Bursts
In this paper we give a brief review of our recent studies on the long and
short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected Swift, in an effort to understand the
puzzle of classifying GRBs. We consider that it is still an appealing
conjecture that both long and short GRBs are drawn from the same parent sample
by observational biases.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figur
