    Modeling Roman Rural Landscapes

    Get PDF
The Department of Classical Archeology at the University of Vienna is currently investigating settlement processes and material culture in rural areas of the Roman province of Noricum by means of noninvasive survey methods. The aim is to create a new and widely accessible digital data base for different, tangible forms of rural settlement activities in the investigation area. For this purpose, individual settlements in Upper Austria were chosen as representative research areas: the surrounding area of Lauriacum / Enns as the economic hinterland of a legion camp, the hinterland of Ovilavis / Wels as a rural area around a civil-urban center, as well as sites in the Vöckla valley as a representative of the remote periphery

This report presents preliminary results of experimental archaeological investigations on the reproduction of the Roman porridge puls. The archaeological experiment "LNF2012" was performed under laboratory conditions as part of the “Lange Nacht der Forschung” 2012 on April 27, at the Department of Classical Archaeology of the University of Vienna. Two posters gave the visitors insights to the Roman cuisine and Experimental Archaeology. Samples of the reproduced puls were dispensed for tasting to randomly chosen individuals. These people filled out a standardized form to describe their taste impressions. Based on the information given by the participants (n = 47), empirically substantiated statements concerning the organoleptic qualities of the puls were made. As a main result of this study an approach on how the manufacturing process of puls can be reconstructed is shown in figures 5 and 6. Based on the obtained data, further investigations shall be made concerning the manufacturing process, the energy expenditure and the porridge’s chemical properties

The fragmentary ‘Biter Group’ in the British Museum in London, which shows a boy sitting on the ground and biting another person’s arm, has long been identified as a Hellenistic genre sculpture of two boys quarreling over a game of knucklebones. Based on a personal visual inspection of the original sculpture and an iconographical survey of the motif of children playing with knucklebones, this article proposes a new digital 3D reconstruction for the missing figure of the bitten boy. After producing a photogrammetric image of the sculpture using image-based modeling (IbM), a simplified base mesh of a juvenile male figure was used to reconstruct the bitten boy. This method allows one to easily test different postures for the missing figure and to try out different viewing perspectives and so formulate a possible composition for the whole group

This dataset is meant to provide an overview over the artefacts collected during the survey. See the corresponding paper for further details. The files, photos of the single artefacts collected, are provided in the Tagged Image File format (.tif). In general, every artefact has been photographed at least once. For some of the finds two photos are provided to indicate special aspects of the find (e.g. different characteristics of the avers and reverse of a coin). A scale (centimeters) is used for every photo.  The photos were taken on May 20th, 2015, using a Canon DIGITAL IXUS 95 IS and post-processed in Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 (Windows). For further information see the single file's metadata. Documentation of the file naming convention: The filenames are standardized (basic concept: MNR06213-15-02_######-XX_##.filetype ) and consist therefore out of four parts: "MNR06213-15-02_" : unique identifier (Maßnahmennummer) for the whole survey project provided by the Federal Monuments Office of Austria (Bundesdenkmalamt) (never changed) "######-XX_" : unique identifier of the single artefact (e.g. 29201-FC) "##" : identifier of the single photo (e.g. 02) ".filetype" : filename extension (.tif) Example: The artefact 9001FC (china fragment) may correspond to the photo with the file name MNR06213-15-02_9001-FC_01.tif.</p
