Incorporating corrosion measurement in hip wear simulators: An added complication or a necessity?
Corrosion is not routinely considered in the assessment of the degradation or the lifetime of total hip replacement bearing surfaces. Biomechanical simulations are becoming ever more complex and are taking into account motion cycles that represent activities beyond a simple walking gait at 1 Hz, marking a departure from the standard ISO BS 14242. However, the degradation is still very often referred to as wear, even though the material loss occurs due to a combination of tribological and corrosion processes and their interactions. This article evaluates how, by incorporating real-time corrosion measurements in total hip replacement simulations, pre-clinical evaluations and research studies can both yield much more information and accelerate the process towards improved implants
Flash Flood simulation and valve behavior of Mytilus galloprovincialis measured with Hall sensors
Mussels close their shell as a protective strategy and the quantification of this behavioral marker may represent an alarm signal when they are exposed to environmental stressors. In the present study, we investigated the ability of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis to recover and then the resilience or inertia of valve activity after a pulsing exposition to diverse levels of salinity (5, 10, 20 and 35 PSU as reference value). The trial simulated an event of drastic and sudden reduction of seawater salinity thus mimicking an event of Flash Flood from intense rain. Valve gaping and movements were measured in continuous cycle for ten days using a customized magneto-electric device which uses Hall sensors. Results showed that under normal conditions of salinity (35 PSU) the general pattern of valve movements was a continuously open state with sporadic spikes indicating a closing motion. At salinity of 5 PSU mussels reacted by closing their valves, leading to a 77% mortality on the fourth day. At salinity of 10 PSU animals were observed with closed valves for the entire duration of the exposure and no mortality occurred, they showed a significant reduction in the valve activity once the reference value of salinity was re-established. In contrast, salinity of 20 PSU did not trigger a significant behavioral response. Interestingly, there no define rhythms of valve movements were recorded during salinity challenges

Journeys in Non-Classical Computation I: A Grand Challenge for computing research
A gateway event is a change to a system that leads to the possibility of huge increases in kinds and levels of complexity. It opens up a whole new kind of phase space to the systemÕs dynamics. Gateway events during evolution of life on earth include the appearance of eukaryotes (organisms with a cell nucleus), an oxygen atmosphere, multi-cellular organisms and grass. Gateway events during the development of mathematics include each invention of a new class of numbers (negative, irrational, imaginary, ...), and dropping Euclid's parallel postulate. A gateway event produces a profound and fundamental change to the system: Once through the gateway, life is never the same again. We are currently poised on the threshold of a significant gateway event in computation: That of breaking free from many of our current Òclassical computationalÓ assumptions. Our Grand Challenge for computer science is to journey through the gateway event obtained by breaking our current classical computational assumptions, and thereby develop a mature science of Non-Classical Computatio

Measurements of postmenopausal bone loss with a new contact ultrasound system
Measurements of broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA) and velocity of ultrasound through the heel (heel velocity, HV) were performed with a Contact Ultrasonic Bone Analyzer (CUBA-Research model) in 229 women. The subjects consisted of 16 healthy young volunteers (Group 1, mean age 26 years), 170 healthy pre- and postmenopausal women (Group 2, mean age 53 years), and 43 osteoporotic women with radiographically defined vertebral crush fracture (Group 3, mean age 66 years). Subjects in Group 1 had 10 repeated measurements in a study of short-term precision. Women in Groups 2 and 3 also had dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans to measure lumbar spine and femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD). The BUA and HV measurements for all 229 women showed a significant correlation (r = 0.75, P <0.001). The precision study on the subjects in Group 1 gave a root mean square coefficient of variation of 6.3% for BUA and 1.04% for HV. Linear regression analysis gave the following relationship between BUA and age for the 170 normal women in Group 2: BUA = 83.6-0.86 (age 40) dB/MHz (r = -0.31, P <0.001, SEE = 16.3 dB/MHz). The relationship between HV and age was as follows: HV = 1614-2:3 (age 40) m/s (r = -0.33, P <0.001, SEE = 42 m/s). Multivariate regression analysis showed that in addition to age, years since the menopause was also a significant factor in determining both BUA and HV.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS
