History of present Time in a Latin American Context: “dark Past” and “Enemies” of the Revolution

Desde la perspectiva de la historia del tiempo presente, este ensayo contempla los usos políticos del pasado en el contexto latinoamericano. Apoyándose en debates historiográficos recientes, pone de relieve la vigencia de los cuestionamientos propios del género en América Latina, así como sus modalidades propias de escritura de la historia y de definición del estatuto del historiador. A través del caso venezolano, se adentra en los vericuetos de una historia oficial asentada en un culto fundacional de la nación (el culto a Bolívar) y en un manejo instrumental constante de las emociones.From the perspective of the history of present time, this essay considers the political uses of the past in the Latin American context. Based on recent historiographical debates, it highlights the validity of questions specific to this disciplinary field in Latin America, as well as its own rules of writing history and defining the status of the historian. Los extranjeros en el Caribe hispano en vísperas de la Independencia: enemigos, revolucionarios, héroes errantes y hombres de buena fe

From the Spanish American historical point of view, and in the broader context of the Atlantic history, the study of political and social processes that preceded the Independence revolutions is quite significant in the long run. In a crowded space –the “Mediterranean (side) of the Caribbean”– the circulation –whether official or not– of men and ideas in a period of reformulation and breaking of imperial links, deserves a more in-depth analysis of social actors and especially of the diverse fringes of colonial society. In this melting pot of imperial interests (mercantile and strategic as well), the presence of foreigners, considered as propagandists of pernicious ideas and political revolutions, aroused fears that the history of representations and sensibilities allows us to see more clearly, to analyze, and to relativize in this essay.En la perspectiva de la historia de América, y en el contexto más amplio de la historia atlántica, el estudio de los procesos políticos y sociales que antecedieron las revoluciones de Independencia cobra especial significado en el tiempo largo. En un espacio muy concurrido –el “Mediterráneo del Caribe”– la circulación –oficial o no– de los hombres y de las ideas en una coyuntura de reformulación y luego de quiebra del pacto imperial, merece un análisis más profundo de sus distintos actores sociales y especialmente de sus márgenes. An attempt to observe economy globalization: the cross correlation distance evolution of the top 19 GDP's

Economy correlations between the 19 richest countries are investigated through their Gross Domestic Product increments. A distance is defined between increment correlation matrix elements and their evolution studied as a function of time and time window size. Unidirectional and Bidirectional Minimal Length Paths are generated and analyzed for different time windows. A sort of critical correlation time window is found indicating a transition for best observations. The mean length path decreases with time, indicating stronger correlations. A new method for estimating a realistic minimal time window to observe correlations and deduce macroeconomy conclusions from such features is thus suggested.Comment: to be published in the Dyses05 proceedings, in Int. La caricatura política desde un siglo XXI iberoamericano. Una historia cultural del tiempo presente

In an adverse context for freedom of thought in the so called public sphere, and from the perspective of the history of present time, this study explores the sense that is supposed to have in Latin America one of the “recent disasters” as was the attack against the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in France. Political caricature appears to be the expression of a traumatic experience and a shared political culture through both republican and democratic practices. However, on a continent democratized but still grappling with memory and the traumatic past of dictatorships, this imaginary is also strongly questioned by authoritarian ideological options. A figure hovers in both positions (democratic and authoritarian as well) and impacts on related imaginary: the victims figure, which within this relationship to the past or regime of historicity, not only replace “the era of witnesses” exemplified by the history of present time but also are integrated into an instrumentalized regime of emotions finally leading to a skewed view of history.En una coyuntura adversa a la libertad de opinión en el espacio público tanto en Europa como en América Latina y desde la perspectiva de la historia del tiempo presente, este estudio analiza el significado que habrá tenido desde y para América Latina una de las “últimas catástrofes” como lo fue el atentado en contra del periódico satírico Charlie Hebdo en París en enero de 2015. La caricatura política aparece en efecto como el revelador no sólo de un acontecer traumático sino también de una cultura política compartida a través de unas prácticas republicanas y democráticas. Ahora bien, el imaginario político que conlleva se ve cuestionado y hasta rebatido por opciones ideológicas autoritarias en un continente democratizado pero que se enfrenta todavía con unas memorias divididas o con el pasado traumático de las dictaduras. Una figura asoma en ambas posturas (la democrática y la autoritaria) y en los imaginarios afines: la de las víctimas, que dentro de esta relación al pasado o régimen de historicidad, tiende no sólo a sustituir a “la era de los testigos” ejemplificada por la historia del tiempo presente sino también a integrarse en un registro emocional instrumentalizado de que se deriva una visión sesgada de la historia
