Spectral variability on primitive asteroids of the Themis and Beagle families: space weathering effects or parent body heterogeneity?
Themis is an old and statistically robust asteroid family populating the
outer main belt, and resulting from a catastrophic collision that took place
2.51.0 Gyr ago. Within the old Themis family a young sub-family, Beagle,
formed less than 10 Myr ago, has been identified. We present the results of a
spectroscopic survey in the visible and near infrared range of 22 Themis and 8
Beagle families members. The Themis members investigated exhibit a wide range
of spectral behaviors, while the younger Beagle family members look spectrally
bluer with a smaller spectral slope variability. The best meteorite spectral
analogues found for both Themis and Beagle families members are carbonaceous
chondrites having experienced different degrees of aqueous alteration,
prevalently CM2 but also CV3 and CI, and some of them are chondrite samples
being unusual or heated. We extended the spectral analysis including the data
available in the literature on Themis and Beagle families members, and we
looked for correlations between spectral behavior and physical parameters using
the albedo and size values derived from the WISE data. The analysis of this
larger sample confirm the spectral diversity within the Themis family and that
Beagle members tend to be bluer and to have an higher albedo. The differences
between the two family may be partially explained by space weathering
processes, which act on these primitive surfaces in a similar way than on
S-type asteroids, i.e. producing reddening and darkening. However we see
several Themis members having albedos and spectral slopes similar to the young
Beagle members. Alternative scenarios are proposed including heterogeneity in
the parent body having a compositional gradient with depth, and/or the survival

Advanced combined iodine dispenser and detector
A total weight of 1.23 kg (2.7 lb), a total volume of 1213 cu m (74 cu in), and an average power consumption of 5.5W was achieved in the advanced combined iodine dispenser/detector by integrating the detector with the iodine source, arranging all iodinator components within a compact package and lowering the parasitic power to the detector and electronics circuits. These achievements surpassed the design goals of 1.36 kg (3.0 lb), 1671 cu m (102 cu in) and 8W. The reliability and maintainability were improved by reducing the detector lamp power, using an interchangeable lamp concept, making the electronic circuit boards easily accessible, providing redundant water seals and improving the accessibility to the iodine accumulator for refilling. The system was designed to iodinate (to 5 ppm iodine) the fuel cell water generated during 27 seven-day orbiter missions (equivalent to 18,500 kg (40,700 lb) of water) before the unit must be recharged with iodine crystals
Triple redundant hydrogen sensor with in situ calibration
To meet sensing and calibration needs, an in situ calibration technique was developed. It is based on electrolytic generation of a hydrogen/air atmosphere within a hydrogen sensor. The hydrogen is generated from water vapor in the air, and being electrical in nature, the in situ calibration can be performed completely automatically in remote locations. Triply redundant sensor elements are integrated within a single, compact housing, and digital logic provides inter-sensor comparisons to warn of and identify malfunctioning sensor elements. Ion counting efficiencies at the IGISOL facility
At the IGISOL-JYFLTRAP facility, fission mass yields can be studied at high
precision. Fission fragments from a U target are passing through a Ni foil and
entering a gas filled chamber. The collected fragments are guided through a
mass separator to a Penning trap where their masses are identified. This
simulation work focuses on how different fission fragment properties (mass,
charge and energy) affect the stopping efficiency in the gas cell. In addition,
different experimental parameters are varied (e. g. U and Ni thickness and He
gas pressure) to study their impact on the stopping efficiency. The simulations
were performed using the Geant4 package and the SRIM code. The main results
suggest a small variation in the stopping efficiency as a function of mass,
charge and kinetic energy. It is predicted that heavy fragments are stopped
about 9% less efficiently than the light fragments. However it was found that
the properties of the U, Ni and the He gas influences this behavior. Hence it
could be possible to optimize the efficiency.Comment: 52 pages, 44 figure
Estimating Electric Fields from Vector Magnetogram Sequences
Determining the electric field (E-field) distribution on the Sun's
photosphere is essential for quantitative studies of how energy flows from the
Sun's photosphere, through the corona, and into the heliosphere. This E-field
also provides valuable input for data-driven models of the solar atmosphere and
the Sun-Earth system. We show how Faraday's Law can be used with observed
vector magnetogram time series to estimate the photospheric E-field, an
ill-posed inversion problem. Our method uses a "poloidal-toroidal
decomposition" (PTD) of the time derivative of the vector magnetic field. The
PTD solutions are not unique; the gradient of a scalar potential can be added
to the PTD E-field without affecting consistency with Faraday's Law. We present
an iterative technique to determine a potential function consistent with ideal
MHD evolution; but this E-field is also not a unique solution to Faraday's Law.
Finally, we explore a variational approach that minimizes an energy functional
to determine a unique E-field, similar to Longcope's "Minimum Energy Fit". The
PTD technique, the iterative technique, and the variational technique are used
to estimate E-fields from a pair of synthetic vector magnetograms taken from an
MHD simulation; and these E-fields are compared with the simulation's known
electric fields. These three techniques are then applied to a pair of vector
magnetograms of solar active region NOAA AR8210, to demonstrate the methods

Impact of pump OSNR on noise figure for fiber-optical parametric amplifiers
Electrical measurements of the noise figure of a fiberoptical parametric amplifier are presented and compared with optical measurements. The transfer of pump noise by four-wave mixing was clearly demonstrated. A numerical model was developed to simulate the transfer of pump noise and validated by these measurements. Using this model, we determine, for practical systems, a minimum required pump optical signal-to-noise ratio of 65 dB
Impact of pump phase modulation on system performance of fibre-optical parametric amplifiers
Bit error rate induced in a parametric amplifier has been measured with a 10 Gbit=s line rate. It is shown experimentally that the phase modulation of the pump distorts the mark level of the channel and may cause system penalty. Different phase modulation schemes have been compared
Characterization of a Be(p,xn) neutron source for fission yields measurements
We report on measurements performed at The Svedberg Laboratory (TSL) to
characterize a proton-neutron converter for independent fission yield studies
at the IGISOL-JYFLTRAP facility (Jyv\"askyl\"a, Finland). A 30 MeV proton beam
impinged on a 5 mm water-cooled Beryllium target. Two independent experimental
techniques have been used to measure the neutron spectrum: a Time of Flight
(TOF) system used to estimate the high-energy contribution, and a Bonner Sphere
Spectrometer able to provide precise results from thermal energies up to 20
MeV. An overlap between the energy regions covered by the two systems will
permit a cross-check of the results from the different techniques. In this
paper, the measurement and analysis techniques will be presented together with
