PATTERNA: transcriptome-wide search for functional RNA elements via structural data signatures.
Establishing a link between RNA structure and function remains a great challenge in RNA biology. The emergence of high-throughput structure profiling experiments is revolutionizing our ability to decipher structure, yet principled approaches for extracting information on structural elements directly from these data sets are lacking. We present PATTERNA, an unsupervised pattern recognition algorithm that rapidly mines RNA structure motifs from profiling data. We demonstrate that PATTERNA detects motifs with an accuracy comparable to commonly used thermodynamic models and highlight its utility in automating data-directed structure modeling from large data sets. PATTERNA is versatile and compatible with diverse profiling techniques and experimental conditions
A note on many valued quantum computational logics
The standard theory of quantum computation relies on the idea that the basic
information quantity is represented by a superposition of elements of the
canonical basis and the notion of probability naturally follows from the Born
rule. In this work we consider three valued quantum computational logics. More
specifically, we will focus on the Hilbert space C^3, we discuss extensions of
several gates to this space and, using the notion of effect probability, we
provide a characterization of its states.Comment: Pages 15, Soft Computing, 201
Stone-type representations and dualities for varieties of bisemilattices
In this article we will focus our attention on the variety of distributive
bisemilattices and some linguistic expansions thereof: bounded, De Morgan, and
involutive bisemilattices. After extending Balbes' representation theorem to
bounded, De Morgan, and involutive bisemilattices, we make use of Hartonas-Dunn
duality and introduce the categories of 2spaces and 2spaces. The
categories of 2spaces and 2spaces will play with respect to the
categories of distributive bisemilattices and De Morgan bisemilattices,
respectively, a role analogous to the category of Stone spaces with respect to
the category of Boolean algebras. Actually, the aim of this work is to show
that these categories are, in fact, dually equivalent
Gesture based human-computer interface for 3D design
modeling are amongst the most important fields of interest in current computer vision research. However, traditional hand recognition systems can only operate in constrained environments using coloured gloves or static backgrounds and do not allow for 3D object manipulation. The goal of this research is to develop real-time camera based solutions to control 3D modeling applications using natural hand gestures
Sparse optical flow regularisation for real-time visual tracking
Optical flow can greatly improve the robustness of visual tracking algorithms. While dense optical flow algorithms have various applications, they can not be used for real-time solutions without resorting to GPU calculations. Furthermore, most optical flow algorithms fail in challenging lighting environments due to the violation of the brightness constraint. We propose a simple but effective iterative regularisation scheme for real-time, sparse optical flow algorithms, that is shown to be robust to sudden illumination changes and can handle large displacements. The algorithm proves to outperform well known techniques in real life video sequences, while being much faster to calculate. Our solution increases the robustness of a real-time particle filter based tracking application, consuming only a fraction of the available CPU power. Furthermore, a new and realistic optical flow dataset with annotated ground truth is created and made freely available for research purposes
Soil quality evaluation under agro-silvo-pastoral Mediterranean management systems
According to Franzluebber (2002) the degree of stratification of soil organic C and N, as well as other parameters, with soil depth, expressed as a ratio, can indicate soil quality or soil ecosystem functioning and sustainability under different agricultural management. Stratification ratios > 2 indicate a higher soil quality and contribution to agriculture sustainability. A case study from northeastern Sardinia (Italy) is presented
