Attachment styles as predictors of Facebook-related jealousy and surveillance in romantic relationships

In two studies, we tested attachment anxiety and avoidance as predictors of Facebook-related jealousy and surveillance (i.e., checking a romantic partner’s Facebook page). Study 1 found that anxiety was positively associated, and avoidance negatively associated, with Facebook jealousy and surveillance. The association of anxiety with Facebook jealousy was mediated in part by lower trust. Study 2 replicated this finding, and daily diary results further showed that over a one-week period, anxiety was positively associated, and avoidance negatively associated, with Facebook surveillance. Evolving management for critical pulmonary stenosis in neonates and young infants
Over the years, management of critical pulmonary stenosis in young infants has evolved from surgical reconstruction of the right ventricular outflow tract and closed pulmonary valvotomy to transcatheter balloon valvoplasty. Our study aimed at evaluating how the changing policy for management had affected the immediate and long term outcomes of babies with this cardiac lesion. Interventions were made in 34 infants at a median age of 8.5 days (2-90 days). Reconstruction of the right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction was performed in 10 patients, closed pulmonary valvotomy in 13, and balloon valvoplasty in 11. Initial procedure-related mortality was 50%, 15% and 0% respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed transannular patching of the right ventricular outflow tract, and male sex, to be significant factors for death. For the 27 survivors, the ratio of right ventricular to systemic systolic pressure decreased from 1.6 ± 0.3 to 0.3 ± 0.2 after reconstruction of the outflow tract, 1.8 ± 0.5 to 0.8 ± 0.4 after closed valvotomy, and 1.8 ± 0.6 to 0.9 ± 0.3 after balloon valvoplasty. The decrease was significantly greater after patch reconstruction (p=0.025) that required no further reinterventions. The overall rate of reintervention for the survivors was 37% (10/27). The freedom from reintervention after closed valvotomy was 82%, 64% and 51% at 1, 5 and 10 years respectively. The figure remained at 78% at both 1 and 5 years (p=0.66) after balloon valvoplasty. The higher reintervention rate for closed valvotomy corresponded to the significantly greater residual gradient across the pulmonary valve noted on follow-up (p=0.01). Reinterventions included balloon dilation (n=6), reconstruction of the outflow tract (n=4), and 1 each of ligation of an arterial duct and systemic-pulmonary arterial shunting. The risk factor for reintervention was a hypoplastic right ventricle. In conclusion, transcatheter balloon valvoplasty appears to be the optimum initial approach in view of its low mortality, efficacy at relieving the obstruction, and low rate of reintervention. © Greenwich Medical Media Ltd.published_or_final_versio
EL2 deep donor state in semi-insulating GaAs revealed by frequency dependent positron mobility measurements
Positron mobility measurements carried out on semi-insulating GaAs, using the Doppler shift in annihilation radiation technique, show a sharp transition from a high mobility value ∼120 cm2 V-1 s-1 to a lower value ∼45 V-1 s-1 just below room temperature. The temperature of the transition is found to be dependent on the frequency of the applied AC bias. We show that this effect is an artifact due to the thermal ionization of the EL2 deep donor state, which in its ionized state forms a positive space charge that causes the positron to experience large electric fields. This observation suggests a new positron annihilation-based deep-level transient technique applicable to semi-insulating materials. © 1994 The American Physical Society.published_or_final_versio
Missense-depleted regions in population exomes implicate ras superfamily nucleotide-binding protein alteration in patients with brain malformation.
Genomic sequence interpretation can miss clinically relevant missense variants for several reasons. Rare missense variants are numerous in the exome and difficult to prioritise. Affected genes may also not have existing disease association. To improve variant prioritisation, we leverage population exome data to identify intragenic missense-depleted regions (MDRs) genome-wide that may be important in disease. We then use missense depletion analyses to help prioritise undiagnosed disease exome variants. We demonstrate application of this strategy to identify a novel gene association for human brain malformation. We identified de novo missense variants that affect the GDP/GTP-binding site of ARF1 in three unrelated patients. Corresponding functional analysis suggests ARF1 GDP/GTP-activation is affected by the specific missense mutations associated with heterotopia. These findings expand the genetic pathway underpinning neurologic disease that classically includes FLNA. ARF1 along with ARFGEF2 add further evidence implicating ARF/GEFs in the brain. Using functional ontology, top MDR-containing genes were highly enriched for nucleotide-binding function, suggesting these may be candidates for human disease. Routine consideration of MDR in the interpretation of exome data for rare diseases may help identify strong genetic factors for many severe conditions, infertility/reduction in reproductive capability, and embryonic conditions contributing to preterm loss
Ultrafast phase-change logic device driven by melting processes.
The ultrahigh demand for faster computers is currently tackled by traditional methods such as size scaling (for increasing the number of devices), but this is rapidly becoming almost impossible, due to physical and lithographic limitations. To boost the speed of computers without increasing the number of logic devices, one of the most feasible solutions is to increase the number of operations performed by a device, which is largely impossible to achieve using current silicon-based logic devices. Multiple operations in phase-change-based logic devices have been achieved using crystallization; however, they can achieve mostly speeds of several hundreds of nanoseconds. A difficulty also arises from the trade-off between the speed of crystallization and long-term stability of the amorphous phase. We here instead control the process of melting through premelting disordering effects, while maintaining the superior advantage of phase-change-based logic devices over silicon-based logic devices. A melting speed of just 900 ps was achieved to perform multiple Boolean algebraic operations (e.g., NOR and NOT). Ab initio molecular-dynamics simulations and in situ electrical characterization revealed the origin (i.e., bond buckling of atoms) and kinetics (e.g., discontinuouslike behavior) of melting through premelting disordering, which were key to increasing the melting speeds. By a subtle investigation of the well-characterized phase-transition behavior, this simple method provides an elegant solution to boost significantly the speed of phase-change-based in-memory logic devices, thus paving the way for achieving computers that can perform computations approaching terahertz processing rates.This is the author's accepted manuscript. Working with cancer: health and employment among cancer survivors.

Factors contributing to whether they continue or return to work after cancer diagnosis include: age, physical and mental health, health insurance, education, and cancer site. The purpose of this study was to assess the complex relationships between health indicators and employment status for adult cancer survivors. METHODS: We analyzed pooled data from the 1997-2012 US National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). Our sample included adults with a self-reported physician diagnosis of cancer (n = 24,810) and adults with no cancer history (n = 382,837). Using structural equation modeling (SEM), we evaluated the relationship between sociodemographic factors, cancer site, and physical and mental health indicators on the overall health and employment status among adults with a cancer history. RESULTS: The overall model for cancer survivors fit the data well (χ(2) (374) = 3654.7, P < .001; comparative fit index = 0.98; root mean square error of approximation = 0.04). Although black cancer survivors were less likely to report good-to-excellent health, along with Hispanic survivors, they were more likely to continue to work after diagnosis compared with their white counterparts. Health insurance status and educational level were strongly and positively associated with health status and current employment. Age and time since diagnosis were not significantly associated with health status or employment, but there were significant differences by cancer site. CONCLUSIONS: A proportion of cancer survivors may continue to work because of employment-based health insurance despite reporting poor health and significant physical and mental health limitations. Localization and variable expression of Gαi2 in human endometrium and Fallopian tubes
Background: Heterotrimeric G proteins take part in membrane-mediated cell signalling and have a role in hormonal regulation. This study clarifies the expression and localization of the G protein subunit Gαi2 in the human endometrium and Fallopian tube and changes in Gαi2 expression in human endometrium during the menstrual cycle. Methods: The expression of Gαi2 was identified by Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and localization confirmed by immunostaining. Cyclic changes in Gαi2 expression during the menstrual cycle were evaluated by quantitative real-time PCR. Results: We found Gαi2 to be expressed in human endometrium, Fallopian tube tissue and in primary cultures of Fallopian tube epithelial cells. Our studies revealed enriched localization of Gαi2 in Fallopian tube cilia and in endometrial glands. We showed that Gαi2 expression in human endometrium changes significantly during the menstrual cycle, with a higher level in the secretory versus proliferative and menstrual phases (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Gαi2 is specifically localized in human Fallopian tube epithelial cells, particularly in the cilia, and is likely to have a cilia-specific role in reproduction. Significantly variable expression of Gαi2 during the menstrual cycle suggests Gαi2 might be under hormonal regulation in the female reproductive tract in vivo. © 2007 Oxford University Press.postprin
