    A numerical closure approach for kinetic models of polymeric fluids: exploring closure relations for FENE dumbbells

    Full text link
    We propose a numerical procedure to study closure approximations for FENE dumbbells in terms of chosen macroscopic state variables, enabling to test straightforwardly which macroscopic state variables should be included to build good closures. The method involves the reconstruction of a polymer distribution related to the conditional equilibrium of a microscopic Monte Carlo simulation, conditioned upon the desired macroscopic state. We describe the procedure in detail, give numerical results for several strategies to define the set of macroscopic state variables, and show that the resulting closures are related to those obtained by a so-called quasi-equilibrium approximation \cite{Ilg:2002p10825}

    Metodologia para o transporte de caranguejo vivo com baixos índices de desperdícios.

    O caranguejo-uçá, Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763), é um importante recurso pesqueiro, gerando emprego e renda para milhares de famílias que habitam as regiões costeiras do Brasil. Nos últimos anos, a pesca do caranguejo-uçá declinou em diversos estados da região Nordeste. Atualmente, apenas o Piauí e o Maranhão mantêm as taxas de captura constantes, mas já são observados sinais de sobrepesca nesses estados, tais como, redução do tamanho dos indivíduos capturados e aumento do esforço de pesca sem o incremento da captura. Além dos indícios de sobrepesca observados, entre 40 e 60% dos animais capturados são descartados sem nenhum aproveitamento devido aos gargalos que ocorrem em diversos pontos de sua cadeia produtiva. Neste trabalho, apresentam-se resultados de estudos realizados entre os anos de 2004 e 2006, com caranguejos capturados nos estados do Maranhão e Piauí e comercializados no Ceará. Foram desenvolvidas metodologias simples e de fácil assimilação por parte dos catadores de caranguejo, as quais permitem reduzir as taxas de mortalidade do caranguejo-uçá durante o transporte, seguidas de descarte para valores inferiores a 5%

    MorphIC: A 65-nm 738k-Synapse/mm2^2 Quad-Core Binary-Weight Digital Neuromorphic Processor with Stochastic Spike-Driven Online Learning

    Full text link
    Recent trends in the field of neural network accelerators investigate weight quantization as a means to increase the resource- and power-efficiency of hardware devices. As full on-chip weight storage is necessary to avoid the high energy cost of off-chip memory accesses, memory reduction requirements for weight storage pushed toward the use of binary weights, which were demonstrated to have a limited accuracy reduction on many applications when quantization-aware training techniques are used. In parallel, spiking neural network (SNN) architectures are explored to further reduce power when processing sparse event-based data streams, while on-chip spike-based online learning appears as a key feature for applications constrained in power and resources during the training phase. However, designing power- and area-efficient spiking neural networks still requires the development of specific techniques in order to leverage on-chip online learning on binary weights without compromising the synapse density. In this work, we demonstrate MorphIC, a quad-core binary-weight digital neuromorphic processor embedding a stochastic version of the spike-driven synaptic plasticity (S-SDSP) learning rule and a hierarchical routing fabric for large-scale chip interconnection. The MorphIC SNN processor embeds a total of 2k leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) neurons and more than two million plastic synapses for an active silicon area of 2.86mm2^2 in 65nm CMOS, achieving a high density of 738k synapses/mm2^2. MorphIC demonstrates an order-of-magnitude improvement in the area-accuracy tradeoff on the MNIST classification task compared to previously-proposed SNNs, while having no penalty in the energy-accuracy tradeoff.Comment: This document is the paper as accepted for publication in the IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Circuits and Systems journal (2019), the fully-edited paper is available at https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/876400

    Minimally Constrained Stable Switched Systems and Application to Co-simulation

    Full text link
    We propose an algorithm to restrict the switching signals of a constrained switched system in order to guarantee its stability, while at the same time attempting to keep the largest possible set of allowed switching signals. Our work is motivated by applications to (co-)simulation, where numerical stability is a hard constraint, but should be attained by restricting as little as possible the allowed behaviours of the simulators. We apply our results to certify the stability of an adaptive co-simulation orchestration algorithm, which selects the optimal switching signal at run-time, as a function of (varying) performance and accuracy requirements.Comment: Technical report complementing the following conference publication: Gomes, Cl\'audio, Beno\^it Legat, Rapha\"el Jungers, and Hans Vangheluwe. Foram abordados aspectos referentes às disciplinas de Didática e Prática Pedagógica I e como auxiliam na elaboração e realização de propostas no projeto. O subprojeto teve início em agosto de 2012 e atualmente conta com 12 acadêmicos, duas professoras supervisoras e um coordenador de área, sendo realizado em duas escolas. A partir das discussões é possível afirmar que o PIBID tem atuado como elemento mediador entre as disciplinas do curso, em especial as de cunho pedagógico, e as atividades, observações e discussões realizadas no projeto, atualizando conceitos estudados nas disciplinas e proporcionando um melhor entendendo de suas funções e objetivo

    Halorubrum chaoviator sp. nov., a haloarchaeon isolated from sea salt in Baja California, Mexico, Western Australia and Naxos, Greece

    hree halophilic isolates, strains Halo-G*T, AUS-1 and Naxos II, were compared. Halo-G* was isolated from an evaporitic salt crystal from Baja California, Mexico, whereas AUS-1 and Naxos II were isolated from salt pools in Western Australia and the Greek island of Naxos, respectively. Halo-G*T had been exposed previously to conditions of outer space and survived 2 weeks on the Biopan facility. Chemotaxonomic and molecular comparisons suggested high similarity between the three strains. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the strains clustered with Halorubrum species, showing sequence similarities of 99.2–97.1 %. The DNA–DNA hybridization values of strain Halo-G*T and strains AUS-1 and Naxos II are 73 and 75 %, respectively, indicating that they constitute a single species. The DNA relatedness between strain Halo-G*T and the type strains of 13 closely related species of the genus Halorubrum ranged from 39 to 2 %, suggesting that the three isolates constitute a different genospecies. The G+C content of the DNA of the three strains was 65.5–66.5 mol%. All three strains contained C20C20 derivatives of diethers of phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglyceromethylphosphate and phosphatidylglycerolsulfate, together with a sulfated glycolipid. On the basis of these results, a novel species that includes the three strains is proposed, with the name Halorubrum chaoviator sp. nov. The type strain is strain Halo-G*T (=DSM 19316T =NCIMB 14426T =ATCC BAA-1602T)
