The Lippmann–Schwinger Formula and One Dimensional Models with Dirac Delta Interactions

We show how a proper use of the Lippmann–Schwinger equation simplifies the calculations to obtain scattering states for one dimensional systems perturbed by N Dirac delta equations. Here, we consider two situations. In the former, attractive Dirac deltas perturbed the free one dimensional Schrödinger Hamiltonian. We obtain explicit expressions for scattering and Gamow states. For completeness, we show that the method to obtain bound states use comparable formulas, although not based on the Lippmann–Schwinger equation. Then, the attractive N deltas perturbed the one dimensional Salpeter equation. We also obtain explicit expressions for the scattering wave functions. Here, we need regularisation techniques that we implement via heat kernel regularisation

Incarceration : a rising population dilemma

The nation\u27s incarceration growth continues to soar, having negative economic and societal effects. This research explores continued growth causes and possible answers to prevent, intervene, and slow down incarceration. Hampton Roads institutions\u27 offenders and professional staff were surveyed. The survey focuses on preventive and intervention programs and their effectiveness, sociological and economical factors leading to imprisonment, and statistics supporting incarceration growth. The research goal is to validate program contents and components factoring into imprisonment. The study of others and information generated through this study are used to determine program needs and current effectiveness. This study explores reasons offenders frequent the penal system as well as succes·sful programs available to repeat offenders from the institutions\u27 staff viewpoint and from offenders who experience incarceration and a life of crime

Extended Instruction in Business Courses to Enhance Student Achievement in Math

Poor achievement on standardized math tests negatively impacts high school graduation rates. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate if math instruction in business classes could improve student achievement in math. As supported by constructivist theory, the students in this study were encouraged to use prior knowledge and experiences to make new connections between math concepts and business applications. The key research question examined if there was a significant increase in the standardized mathematics test scores of students enrolled in business classes with extended mathematics instruction compared to the standardized test scores of students not enrolled in business classes with extended mathematics instruction. The 2-sample t-test was used to compare the scores of 42 students in the treatment group to the scores of 47 students in the control group. Based on the findings, there was not a significant difference in the scores of the treatment and control groups. Recommendations for future research included redesigning the treatment to involve additional areas of mathematics instruction as well as extending the number of weeks for the treatment. This study may effect social change by informing teachers and administrators at the local site of the need to examine the effects of incorporating math into other content areas and recommending continued research in this area. The additional exposure, practice, and learning opportunities in math may help high school students achieve in mathematics and ultimately improve graduation rates

The purpose of the study was to examine the usage of YouTube video clips in English Language lesson of Lower Six students of SMK Simunjan No.1. Descriptive statistics was used to collect the intended data. 32 Lower Six students were selected to be part of this study. Pre-test was done before integrating YouTube video clips in the English Language lesson. After the pre-test, treatment was given to the respondents for four weeks. Then, post-test was done to obtain the end results. After the speaking test, respondents were given a questionnaire which consisted of 45 items to identifY factors that motivate them in using YouTube video clips, to investigate their general attitude and to identify the benefits of using YouTube video clips in the English Language lesson. The data was then analyzed using Pair Sample T-test and frequency. The findings showed that the respondents scored better after using YouTube video clips during lesson. The intrinsic motivation among the respondents was derived from the way the native speakers speak. Meanwhile, extrinsic motivation was obtained from the availability of YouTube video clips when the respondents were having their leisure time. The general attitudes of the respondents showed that they appreciated the use of YouTube video clips in learning the English Language. The finding in this study is significant as it showed that authentic materials from YouTube video clips can make the learning of English Language more enjoyable and meaningful. In addition, students will be able to use a wide range of vocabulary and will be more confident to speak English Language

A Comparison of Reunification Rates Between Kin and Non-kin Placements Among African American Children in Foster Care

    Get PDF
Over the past few decades, the number of child maltreatment and child fatality cases has continued to rise. There are more children placed in out of home care than there are foster homes throughout the county. Although studies indicate that the amount of time children spend in foster care has decreased, this is not true for all ethnic groups. African Americans are the minorities among the U.S. population however; they represent t he vast majority in the child welfare system. Research indicates that African American children are less likely to reunify and less likely to be adopted. The purpose of this project is to use existing data to test the hypothesis that African American children placed with family members are less likely to reunify with their parents than African American children placed with non-kin
