Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the fourth leading cause of death in the world. Many of these patients are not diagnosed and as the disease progresses, breathing difficulties and changes in pulmonary physiology begin to appear. Among these changes is hyperinflation, hyperinflation patients retain air in the lungs. Therefore, these patients require follow-up and need to do specific exercises with PEP (Positive Expiratory Pressure) devices to expel this air. In this project we want to implement a system that includes the function of spirometry (calculation of lung function) and telerehabilitation function. For this reason, It is developed on the one hand a mobile application that will be the graphical interface and computer brain, on the other hand is designed a turbine spirometer that by bluetooth sends the velocity of the exhaled air to the application, and finally two replaceable nozzles, one for spirometry tests and another that will be the PEP nozzle for rehabilitation exercises. For the PEP nozzle, which integrates the same turbine to be able to count revolutions, a game will be designed that, through visual stimulation, will alert the patient when exhales too hard or too slow, thus helping the exercises to be performed correctly. For the spirometry nozzle, the FVC, FEV1, Tiffenau Index and volume flow curve will be calculated, and the results stored for graphing as a function of time. With this project, it is intended to provide facilities and solutions to people suffering from this pathology, whose needs require external help from medical centers to follow up their disease and carry out rehabilitation, thereby offering the possibility of do it from home and with equitable control that could give the technical service of a medical center.Universidad de Sevilla. Intergenerational struggles and technological dramas of the neobakala music scene

Get PDF
In late modernity, Western societies undergo profound processes of change that lead to tensions between different social actors, which sometimes occur in intergenerational terms. This article explores these tensions in the field of music through the neobakala scene, which is composed of adults who have created a nostalgic discourse to establish a hierarchy with other musical scenes created by youngsters. The concepts of nostalgia and generation, therefore, will be key in articulating this text but both will be critically approximated, since the two assume a presence of memory in their constitution (that is not always backed by evidence). In this sense, this article, which also explores the past of the neobakala scene, claims memory as a field on its own, differentiated from nostalgia and as a source of criticism of it. On the other hand, in the analysis of this nostalgia, the neobakala scene and the same intergenerational struggles that occur in this late modernity, this article will pay special attention to the role of technological changes. To this end, the article will resort to the concept of remediation and, above all, that of "technological drama", which will allow us to observe a process of reintegration in which the neobakala subversive past ends up aligning itself with power in a context of expansion of digital technologies

Reducing C-terminal truncation mitigates synucleinopathy and neurodegeneration in a transgenic model of multiple system atrophy

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a sporadic orphan neurodegenerative disorder. No treatment is currently available to slow down the aggressive neurodegenerative process, and patients die within a few years after disease onset. The cytopathological hallmark of MSA is the accumulation of alpha-synuclein (α-syn) aggregates in affected oligodendrocytes. Several studies point to α-syn oligomerization and aggregation as a mediator of neurotoxicity in synucleinopathies including MSA. C-terminal truncation by the inflammatory protease caspase-1 has recently been implicated in the mechanisms that promote aggregation of α-syn in vitro and in neuronal cell models of α-syn toxicity. We present here an in vivo proof of concept of the ability of the caspase-1 inhibitor prodrug VX-765 to mitigate α-syn pathology and to mediate neuroprotection in proteolipid protein α-syn (PLP-SYN) mice, a transgenic mouse model of MSA. PLP-SYN and age-matched wild-type mice were treated for a period of 11 wk with VX-765 or placebo. VX-765 prevented motor deficits in PLP-SYN mice compared with placebo controls. More importantly, VX-765 was able to limit the progressive toxicity of α-syn aggregation by reducing its load in the striatum of PLP-SYN mice. Not only did VX-765 reduce truncated α-syn, but it also decreased its monomeric and oligomeric forms. Finally, VX-765 showed neuroprotective effects by preserving tyrosine hydroxylase-positive neurons in the substantia nigra of PLP-SYN mice. In conclusion, our results suggest that VX-765, a drug that was well tolerated in a 6 wk-long phase II trial in patients with epilepsy, is a promising candidate to achieve disease modification in synucleinopathies by limiting α-syn accumulation

Making a difference: One teacher's journey as a mentor

The focus of this work was a mentor-protege relationship that developed over the course of several months between a five year veteran teacher, myself, and Olivia, who was hired for her first year to teach Science in Kindergarten, First, Fourth and Fifth grades. It began as help to plan the First grade lessons only, but over the course of ten meetings it became assistance with planning, teaching strategies, classroom management and advice for all grade levels. Interactions included three observations of her teaching (once in First grade and twice in Kindergarten), teaching a model lesson for a First grade class at her school, and acting as a critical friend and confidant. Having reflected on the data collected and our time together, the following findings have emerged. 1. Teacher attrition is an enormous problem facing first year teachers. 2. A successful mentor-protege relationship requires certain conditions. 3. The experience of acting as a mentor is invaluable to the veteran teacher, offering opportunities for growth and self-reflection. 4. Time and space for teaching science in the elementary classroom is limited, and teachers often feel unqualified to do so. Key Words: mentor, teacher attrition, critical frien

Get PDF

This article ethnographically explores how the neobakala music scene creates ritual and carnivalesque practices to deal with the affective states produced by late capitalism in urban societies. To this end, this study takes as its point of reference the theoretical and methodological proposal of affectivity suggested by Alexandre Surrallés (2005). The article therefore explores the capitalist body and personhood, and identifies its affective states and identity discourses to see how these are projected and reflected. The paper also considers the contributions to the understanding of nostalgia made by Arjun Appadurai (2001) and Sinji Hirai (2009) and finally explores its relations with memory, revealing that, in this case, nostalgia seems to erode memory.

The Bakalas were a youth culture that showed up in some Spanish cities, Madrid among them. After disappearing, this culture has been recreated by neobakalas. This article, based on ethnography and in-depth interviews, explores how neobakalas from Madrid have transformed the bakala culture into a music scene that ritualizes some of the features of the bakalas, especially its songs, giving birth to a music genre. Furthermore, the case of bakalas and neobakalas will allow us to question the way Bennet (2012, 2013) has approached music scenes formed by adults. This work therefore interrogates the applicability of the concepts of ageing cultures (Bennet y Hodkinson 2012; Bennet, 2013) and cultural memory for the neobakala scene. The case of neobakalas will also allow us to problematize how St John (1999, 2011, 2014) analyses the ritual practices of the music scenes related to electronic music

Spectro-photometric analysis of galaxy merger remnants with tidal features

1 online resource (xvi, 68 pages) : illustrations (chiefly colour)Includes abstract and appendix.Includes bibliographical references (pages 65-68).We use 21 208 galaxies at redshifts 0.05 < z < 0.45 with images from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) and accompanying spectroscopic observations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to study the properties of systems that host features of past mergers: streams and shells. We detect 251 shells and 774 streams through visual classification of the original and filtered galaxy images. We retrieve measurements of stellar mass and stellar population age for 16 936 galaxies from our sample. Galaxies with shells are more massive and older than both featureless galaxies and stream hosts, suggesting that they may be a result of major mergers. We analyse the star formation rates (SFR) for 6738 of our galaxies, derived from reliable measurements of Hα available from the SDSS Legacy Survey. Shell hosts are predominantly among quiescent galaxies while stream hosts span the full range of SFR measurements. We construct diagnostic diagrams for 6778 galaxies to separate star forming galaxies from those that are dominated by Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). A fraction (10%) of galaxies with streams show evidence of strong AGN activity, which may be a result of material being funnelled into the central region of the host galaxy. In contrast, almost no shell hosts show the presence of strong nuclear activity. We measure the local density in the vicinity of our tidal feature hosts using data from the New York University Value-Added Galaxy Catalog (NYU-VAGC). We find that galaxies with features are, as expected, neither in isolated regions nor in clusters since these environments suppress mergers. We also observe that galaxies with shells tend to be in regions with slightly higher densities than the general population of galaxies. Based on sheer numbers and the distribution of the basic properties of the galaxies, we find that streams can occur in a vast range of galaxy mergers, while the formation of shells needs specific sets of conditions
