Do bilinguals have different concepts? The case of shape and material in Japanese L2 users of English
An experiment investigated whether Japanese speakers’ categorisation of objects and substances as shape or material is influenced by acquiring English, based on Imai and Gentner (1997). Subjects were presented with an item such as a cork pyramid and asked to choose between two other items that matched it for shape (plastic pyramid) or for material (piece of cork). The hypotheses were that for simple objects the number of shape-based categorisations would increase according to experience of English and that the preference for shape and material-based categorisations of Japanese speakers of English would differ from mono¬lingual speakers of both languages. Subjects were 18 adult Japanese users of English who had lived in English-speaking countries between 6 months and 3 years (short-stay group), and 18 who had lived in English-speaking countries for 3 years or more (long-stay group). Both groups achieved above criterion on an English vocabulary test. Results were: both groups preferred material responses for simple objects and substances but not for complex objects, in line with Japanese mono¬linguals, but the long-stay group showed more shape preference than the short-stay group and also were less different from Americans. These effects of acquiring a second language on categorisation have implications for conceptual representation and methodology
Singular Coexistence-curve Diameters: Experiments and Simulations
Precise calculations of the coexistence-curve diameters of a hard-core

exhibit mar ked deviations from rectilinear behavior. The HCSW diameter
displays a singularity that sets in sharply for ; this compares favorably with extensive data for
, also reflec ted in CH, N, etc. By contrast, the curvature
of the RPM diameter va ries slowly over a wide range ; this
behavior mirrors observati ons for liquid alkali metals, specifically Rb and
Cs. Amplitudes for the leading singular terms can be estimated numerically but

Analysis of satellite-derived Arctic tropospheric BrO columns in conjunction with aircraft measurements during ARCTAS and ARCPAC
We derive tropospheric column BrO during the ARCTAS and ARCPAC field campaigns in spring 2008 using retrievals of total column BrO from the satellite UV nadir sensors OMI and GOME-2 using a radiative transfer model and stratospheric column BrO from a photochemical simulation. We conduct a comprehensive comparison of satellite-derived tropospheric BrO column to aircraft in-situ observations of BrO and related species. The aircraft profiles reveal that tropospheric BrO, when present during April 2008, was distributed over a broad range of altitudes rather than being confined to the planetary boundary layer (PBL). Perturbations to the total column resulting from tropospheric BrO are the same magnitude as perturbations due to longitudinal variations in the stratospheric component, so proper accounting of the stratospheric signal is essential for accurate determination of satellite-derived tropospheric BrO. We find reasonably good agreement between satellite-derived tropospheric BrO and columns found using aircraft in-situ BrO profiles, particularly when satellite radiances were obtained over bright surfaces (albedo \u3e0.7), for solar zenith angl
Existence of a critical point in the phase diagram of the ideal relativistic neutral Bose gas
We explore the phase transitions of the ideal relativistic neutral Bose gas
confined in a cubic box, without assuming the thermodynamic limit nor
continuous approximation. While the corresponding non-relativistic canonical
partition function is essentially a one-variable function depending on a
particular combination of temperature and volume, the relativistic canonical
partition function is genuinely a two-variable function of them. Based on an
exact expression of the canonical partition function, we performed numerical
computations for up to hundred thousand particles. We report that if the number
of particles is equal to or greater than a critical value, which amounts to
7616, the ideal relativistic neutral Bose gas features a spinodal curve with a
critical point. This enables us to depict the phase diagram of the ideal Bose
gas. The consequent phase transition is first-order below the critical pressure
or second-order at the critical pressure. The exponents corresponding to the
singularities are 1/2 and 2/3 respectively. We also verify the recently

Are language production problems apparent in adults who no longer meet diagnostic criteria for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder?
In this study, we examined sentence production in a sample of adults (N = 21) who had had attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as children, but as adults no longer met DSM-IV diagnostic criteria (APA, 2000). This “remitted” group was assessed on a sentence production task. On each trial, participants saw two objects and a verb. Their task was to construct a sentence using the objects as arguments of the verb. Results showed more ungrammatical and disfluent utterances with one particular type of verb (i.e., participle). In a second set of analyses, we compared the remitted group to both control participants and a “persistent” group, who had ADHD as children and as adults. Results showed that remitters were more likely to produce ungrammatical utterances and to make repair disfluencies compared to controls, and they patterned more similarly to ADHD participants. Estimate of the Collins fragmentation function in a chiral invariant approach
We predict the features of the Collins function, which describes the
fragmentation of a transversely polarized quark into an unpolarized hadron, by
modeling the fragmentation process at a low energy scale. We use the chiral
invariant approach of Manohar and Georgi, where constituent quarks and
Goldstone bosons are considered as effective degrees of freedom in the
non-perturbative regime of QCD. To test the approach we calculate the
unpolarized fragmentation function and the transverse momentum distribution of
a produced hadron, both of which are described reasonably well. In the case of
semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, our estimate of the Collins function
in connection with the transversity distribution gives rise to a transverse
single spin asymmetry of the order of 10%, supporting the idea of measuring the
transversity distribution of the nucleon in this way. In the case of e+ e-
annihilation into two hadrons, our model predicts a Collins azimuthal asymmetry

Thermodynamic characteristics of the classical n-vector magnetic model in three dimensions
The method of calculating the free energy and thermodynamic characteristics
of the classical n-vector three-dimensional (3D) magnetic model at the
microscopic level without any adjustable parameters is proposed. Mathematical
description is perfomed using the collective variables (CV) method in the
framework of the model approximation. The exponentially decreasing
function of the distance between the particles situated at the N sites of a
simple cubic lattice is used as the interaction potential. Explicit and
rigorous analytical expressions for entropy,internal energy, specific heat near
the phase transition point as functions of the temperature are obtained. The
dependence of the amplitudes of the thermodynamic characteristics of the system
for and on the microscopic parameters of the interaction
potential are studied for the cases and . The obtained
results provide the basis for accurate analysis of the critical behaviour in

The liquid-vapor interface of an ionic fluid
We investigate the liquid-vapor interface of the restricted primitive model
(RPM) for an ionic fluid using a density-functional approximation based on
correlation functions of the homogeneous fluid as obtained from the
mean-spherical approximation (MSA). In the limit of a homogeneous fluid our
approach yields the well-known MSA (energy) equation of state. The ionic
interfacial density profiles, which for the RPM are identical for both species,
have a shape similar to those of simple atomic fluids in that the decay towards
the bulk values is more rapid on the vapor side than on the liquid side. This
is the opposite asymmetry of the decay to that found in earlier calculations
for the RPM based on a square-gradient theory. The width of the interface is,
for a wide range of temperatures, approximately four times the second moment
correlation length of the liquid phase. We discuss the magnitude and
temperature dependence of the surface tension, and argue that for temperatures
near the triple point the ratio of the dimensionless surface tension and
critical temperature is much smaller for the RPM than for simple atomic fluids.Comment: 6 postscript figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Investigating Executive Working Memory and Phonological Short-Term Memory in Relation to Fluency and Self-Repair Behavior in L2 Speech
This paper reports the findings of a study investigating the relationship of executive working memory (WM) and phonological short-term memory (PSTM) to fluency and self-repair behavior during an unrehearsed oral task performed by second language (L2) speakers of English at two levels of proficiency, elementary and lower intermediate. Correlational analyses revealed a negative relationship between executive WM and number of pauses in the lower intermediate L2 speakers. However, no reliable association was found in our sample between executive WM or PSTM and self-repair behavior in terms of either frequency or type of self-repair. Taken together, our findings suggest that while executive WM may enhance performance at the conceptualization and formulation stages of the speech production process, self-repair behavior in L2 speakers may depend on factors other than working memory
