The gravitational field of a global monopole
We present an exact solution to the non-linear equation which describes a
global monopole in the flat space. We re-examine the metric and the geodesics
outside the global monopole. We will see that a global monopole produces a
repulsive gravitational field outside the core in addition to a solid angular
deficit. The lensing property of the global monopole and the global
monopole-antimonopole annihilation mechanism are studied.Comment: 8 pages, no figure

PGGA: A predictable and grouped genetic algorithm for job scheduling
This paper presents a predictable and grouped genetic algorithm (PGGA) for job scheduling. The novelty of the PGGA is twofold: (1) a job workload estimation algorithm is designed to estimate a job workload based on its historical execution records, (2) the divisible load theory (DLT) is employed to predict an optimal fitness value by which the PGGA speeds up the convergence process in searching a large scheduling space. Comparison with traditional scheduling methods such as first-come-first-serve (FCFS) and random scheduling, heuristics such as a typical genetic algorithm, Min-Min and Max-Min indicates that the PGGA is more effective and efficient in finding optimal scheduling solutions
Sorting, Selection, and Transformation of the Return to College Education In China
We estimate selection and sorting effects on the evolution of the private return to schooling for college graduates during China’s reform between 1988 and 2002. We pay special attention to the changing role of sorting by ability versus budget-constraint effects as China’s education policy has changed from one in which the bulk of direct costs are paid by government for students who pass a rigid set of test to one in which freedom of choice is increasingly the rule for those who can afford to pay for tuition and living expenses while acquiring higher education. We find evidence of substantial sorting gains under the traditional system but that gains have diminished and even become negative as schooling choices widened and participation has become subject to increasing direct private costs. We take this as evidence consistent with the influence of financial constraints on decisions to attend college.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/40142/3/wp756.pd
Three-Dimensional MHD Simulation of Caltech Plasma Jet Experiment: First Results
Magnetic fields are believed to play an essential role in astrophysical jets
with observations suggesting the presence of helical magnetic fields. Here, we
present three-dimensional (3D) ideal MHD simulationsof the Caltech plasma jet
experiment using a magnetic tower scenario as the baseline model. Magnetic
fields consist of an initially localized dipole-like poloidal component and a
toroidal component that is continuously being injected into the domain. This
flux injection mimics the poloidal currents driven by the anode-cathode voltage
drop in the experiment. The injected toroidal field stretches the poloidal
fields to large distances, while forming a collimated jet along with several
other key features. Detailed comparisons between 3D MHD simulations and
experimental measurements provide a comprehensive description of the interplay
among magnetic force, pressure and flow effects. In particular, we delineate
both the jet structure and the transition process that converts the injected
magnetic energy to other forms. With suitably chosen parameters that are
derived from experiments, the jet in the simulation agrees quantitatively with
the experimental jet in terms of magnetic/kinetic/inertial energy, total
poloidal current, voltage, jet radius, and jet propagation velocity.
Specifically, the jet velocity in the simulation is proportional to the
poloidal current divided by the square root of the jet density, in agreement
with both the experiment and analytical theory. This work provides a new and
quantitative method for relating experiments, numerical simulations and
astrophysical observation, and demonstrates the possibility of using
terrestrial laboratory experiments to study astrophysical jets.Comment: accepted by ApJ 37 pages, 15 figures, 2 table
