The DIGMAP geo-temporal web gazetteer service

This paper presents the DIGMAP geo-temporal Web gazetteer service, a system providing access to names of places, historical periods, and associated geo-temporal information. Within the DIGMAP project, this gazetteer serves as the unified repository of geographic and temporal information, assisting in the recognition and disambiguation of geo-temporal expressions over text, as well as in resource searching and indexing. We describe the data integration methodology, the handling of temporal information and some of the applications that use the gazetteer. Initial evaluation results show that the proposed system can adequately support several tasks related to geo-temporal information extraction and retrieval

Formulation of a project for a flow water adaptation in a concrete plant, coming front a quarry to a zaracza´s stream

El presente trabajo formula una metodología con lineamientos de PMI para el desarrollo de un proyecto de adecuación de un flujo de agua proveniente de una cantera, que cruza por una planta de concreto y termina desembocando en la quebrada Zaracza, logrando así evitar sanciones ambientales y jurídicas. Primero se realiza un levantamiento actual del estado de la adecuación del agua antes de desarrollar el proyecto, después se define el alcance, un plan de riesgos, la creación de las actividades para definir la EDT del proyecto, tiempos de asignación a cada actividad, costo estimado, entregables y responsables de cada actividad. Con la implementación del proyecto se logra evitar una contaminación de sedimentos en el cuerpo de agua (Quebrada) y un reaprovechamiento del recurso en su proceso productivo.This paper formulates a methodology with guidelines of PMI for the development of a project to adapt a water flow from a quarry, that crosses a concrete plant and ends at the Zaracza´s stream, thus avoiding environmental and legal sanctions. First, a current survey of the state of the water pipeline is carried out before the project is developed, after defines a scope, a risk plan, the creation of activities to define the project WBS, allocation times for each activity, estimated cost, deliverables and responsible for each activity. With the implementation of the project it is possible to avoid a contamination of sediments in the body of water (stream) and reuse the resource in the productive process

Good practice of receipt of suppliers in a cross docking platform for mass products

En este trabajo se identificara la metodología de programación de citas para los proveedores y los lineamientos que se realiza a los mismos cuando hagan entregas de productos en una plataforma de Cross Docking. Este articulo muestra la problemática que ha tenido la cadena de abastecimiento buscando cumplir tanto en tiempo como en cantidad logrando suplir las necesidades de una tienda, bajo este esquema uno de los caminos que ayudara al cumplimiento es el proceso de Cross Docking el cual busca reducir la manipulación del producto, se puede consolidar y desconsolidar múltiples productos, el costo es mucho menor para un proveedor que entregue en múltiples sitio que ahora lo realice en un solo punto y los más importante el control y trazabilidad del procesamiento de los mismos. Por otra parte, se identifican las metodologías que ayudaran al Cross Docking ser mucho más efectivo en su flujo operativo, mediante una identificación de una administración de malla objetiva tanto para el proveedor como para la operación y la certificación de proveedores que busca reducir el proceso de auditorías y revisión de la mercancía durante el proceso de la misma logrando transformar un proveedor normal a uno estratégico en la compañía.In this paper the methodology of scheduling for providers and guidelines to be undertaken to identify themselves when making deliveries of products in a cross docking platform. This article shows that the problem has been looking for a supply chain meet both time and quantity to meet the needs of managing a store under this scheme one of the ways to help the compliance is Cross Docking process which seeks to reduce product handling, consolidation and deconsolidation can multiple products, the cost is much lower for a supplier to deliver in multiple site now done in a single point and the most important control and traceability of the processing thereof. Likewise methodologies that help the Cross Docking be much more effective in its Effective flow by an identification of a management objective mesh for both the supplier and the operation and certification of providers seeking to reduce the audit process are identified and review of the goods during the same managing to transform a normal supplier to a strategic supplier to the company

A geo-temporal information extraction service for processing descriptive metadata in digital libraries

In the context of digital map libraries, resources are usually described according to metadata records that define the relevant subject, location, time-span, format and keywords. On what concerns locations and time-spans, metadata records are often incomplete or they provide information in a way that is not machine-understandable (e.g. textual descriptions). This paper presents techniques for extracting geotemporal information from text, using relatively simple text mining methods that leverage on a Web gazetteer service. The idea is to go from human-made geotemporal referencing (i.e. using place and period names in textual expressions) into geo-spatial coordinates and time-spans. A prototype system, implementing the proposed methods, is described in detail. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed approaches

Grasslands, cattle and land use in the neotropics and subtropics

The paper reviews trends in land use change in the tropics and subtropics of Latin America and the Caribbean, and their relation to the evolution of the cattle industry in the region. It is posited that horizontal expansion is nearly finished, and that cattle sector, and the grasslands that support it, are beginning to intensify. Nevertheless a number of paradoxes subsist and are discussed. Most notable among these are the interactions among land speculation, a characteristic aspect of much of the extensive cattle industry throughout history, with policies and technologies. An overview of grassland-based cattle systems is given and their social, economic and environmental are discussed, showing some of the tradeoffs between intensification, equity and environmental impact. In this context, the desirability of integrating the crop and cattle enterprises is pointed out, and some of the barely incipient trends are identified. The potential benefits brought about by public sector funded research on tropical pastures has been simulated and is summarized, implying that this area of investment has been systematically underfunded. Lastly, the overriding importance of policy changes, and their close interactions with technology developments are analyzed based on simulations ran for the region, and it is concluded that grassland and animal scientists should become more involved in policy debates regarding development of the sector and its environmental implications
