Engineering and Manipulating Exciton Wave Packets
When a semiconductor absorbs light, the resulting electron-hole superposition
amounts to a uncontrolled quantum ripple that eventually degenerates into
diffusion. If the conformation of these excitonic superpositions could be
engineered, though, they would constitute a new means of transporting
information and energy. We show that properly designed laser pulses can be used
to create such excitonic wave packets. They can be formed with a prescribed
speed, direction and spectral make-up that allows them to be selectively
passed, rejected or even dissociated using superlattices. Their coherence also
provides a handle for manipulation using active, external controls. Energy and
information can be conveniently processed and subsequently removed at a distant
site by reversing the original procedure to produce a stimulated emission. The
ability to create, manage and remove structured excitons comprises the
foundation for opto-excitonic circuits with application to a wide range of
quantum information, energy and light-flow technologies. The paradigm is
demonstrated using both Tight-Binding and Time-Domain Density Functional Theory

Embedded Ribbons of Graphene Allotropes: An Extended Defect Perspective
Four fundamental dimer manipulations can be used to produce a variety of
localized and extended defect structures in graphene. Two-dimensional templates
result in graphene allotropes, here viewed as extended defects, which can
exhibit either metallic or semiconducting electrical character. \emph{Embedded
allotropic ribbons}--i.e. thin swaths of the new allotropes--can also be
created within graphene. We examine these ribbons and find that they maintain
the electrical character of their parent allotrope even when only a few atoms
in width. Such extended defects may facilitate the construction of monolithic

Feasibility study for a numerical aerodynamic simulation facility. Volume 1
A Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation Facility (NASF) was designed for the simulation of fluid flow around three-dimensional bodies, both in wind tunnel environments and in free space. The application of numerical simulation to this field of endeavor promised to yield economies in aerodynamic and aircraft body designs. A model for a NASF/FMP (Flow Model Processor) ensemble using a possible approach to meeting NASF goals is presented. The purpose of mess in action research: building rigour though a messy turn
Mess and rigour might appear to be strange bedfellows. This paper argues that the purpose of mess is to facilitate a turn towards new constructions of knowing that lead to transformation in practice (an action turn). Engaging in action research - research that can disturb both individual and communally held notions of knowledge for practice - will be messy. Investigations into the 'messy area', the interface between the known and the nearly known, between knowledge in use and tacit knowledge as yet to be useful, reveal the 'messy area' as a vital element for seeing, disrupting, analysing, learning, knowing and changing. It is the place where long-held views shaped by professional knowledge, practical judgement, experience and intuition are seen through other lenses. It is here that reframing takes place and new knowing, which has both theoretical and practical significance, arises: a 'messy turn' takes place
A Binary Millisecond Pulsar in Globular Cluster NGC6544
We report the detection of a new 3.06 ms binary pulsar in the globular
cluster NGC6544 using a Fourier-domain ``acceleration'' search. With an implied
companion mass of ~0.01 solar masses and an orbital period of only P_b~1.7
hours, it displays very similar orbital properties to many pulsars which are
eclipsed by their companion winds. The orbital period is the second shortest of
known binary pulsars after 47 Tuc R. The measured flux density of 1.3 +/- 0.4
mJy at 1332 MHz indicates that the pulsar is almost certainly the known

Colligative properties of solutions: II. Vanishing concentrations
We continue our study of colligative properties of solutions initiated in
math-ph/0407034. We focus on the situations where, in a system of linear size
, the concentration and the chemical potential scale like and
, respectively. We find that there exists a critical value \xit such
that no phase separation occurs for \xi\le\xit while, for \xi>\xit, the two
phases of the solvent coexist for an interval of values of . Moreover, phase
separation begins abruptly in the sense that a macroscopic fraction of the
system suddenly freezes (or melts) forming a crystal (or droplet) of the
complementary phase when reaches a critical value. For certain values of
system parameters, under ``frozen'' boundary conditions, phase separation also
ends abruptly in the sense that the equilibrium droplet grows continuously with
increasing and then suddenly jumps in size to subsume the entire system.
Our findings indicate that the onset of freezing-point depression is in fact a

Gallus GBrowse: a unified genomic database for the chicken
Gallus GBrowse (http://birdbase.net/cgi-bin/gbrowse/gallus/) provides online access to genomic and other information about the chicken, Gallus gallus. The information provided by this resource includes predicted genes and Gene Ontology (GO) terms, links to Gallus In Situ Hybridization Analysis (GEISHA), Unigene and Reactome, the genomic positions of chicken genetic markers, SNPs and microarray probes, and mappings from turkey, condor and zebra finch DNA and EST sequences to the chicken genome. We also provide a BLAT server (http://birdbase.net/cgi-bin/webBlat) for matching user-provided sequences to the chicken genome. These tools make the Gallus GBrowse server a valuable resource for researchers seeking genomic information regarding the chicken and other avian species
