On Hindutva and a Hindu-Catholic, with a Moral for our Times

The purpose of this article is to comment on the term hindutva, viz. Hinduness, with special reference to a 19th century Bengali thinker who sought to indigenise his Christian faith, and to draw some topical conclusions. The thinker is Brahmabandhab Upadhyay (1861-1907) whom his sometime friend, Rabindranath Tagore, Bengal\u27s greatest luminary, described as a Roman Catholic ascetic, yet a Vedantin -- spirited, fearless, self-denying, erudite and uncommonly influential. No doubt Upadhyay was influential then; he had a powerful impact on Tagore himself especially when they were jointly establishing what would later develop as Tagore\u27s brainchild of Santiniketan. For years previously Upadhyay had made a name for himself among the educated in the land in his attempt to give content to his self-description as a Hindu-Catholic, not only by a vigorous campaign of journalism and lectures but by his extraordinary life-style

African animal genetic resources: Their characterisation, conservation and utilisation. Proceedings of the research planning workshop

Addresses different papers presented on the workshop organised by ILCA, as part of the research planning process on a project of characterisation, conservation and utilization of Africa's indigenous animal genetic resources. In taking on this challenging task, ILCA recognised that it could not succeed without substantial collaboration with NARS colleagues. However, it also recognised the need to work out standard characterisation methodology and to outline the implementation process. Workshop participants reached the consensus that this project was timely and that activities should be initiated to document Africa's animal genetic resources, with a view to developing strategies for their conservation and sustainable utilisation. While stressing the importance of breed characterisation, participants reiterated that those breeds identified as currently endangered should be conserved even if their value is not presently apparent. Considerable attention was given to development of experimental designs which would optimise collection of data on population dynamics, physical characteristics and phenotypic and genetic parameters of biological performance traits

Livestock and resource management policy: Issues and priorities for research. Proceedings of the research planning workshop

This workshop was convened to help ILCA develop priorities and plan for research over the five year period, 1994-1998. The purpose of the workshop was to identify issues and priorities for research and training in the general areas of livestock and resource management policy, appropriate methodologies for research in these priorities, the role of ILCA in policy research and opportunities for collaboration with national and international institutes. The workshop addressed topics in the areas of trade and macro-economic policies, technology, policy, markets and institutions, and resource management policy

Review of onychocryptosis: epidemiology, pathogenesis, risk factors, diagnosis and treatment

Ingrown toenail, or onychocryptosis, is a highly prevalent nail condition that occurs when the nail edge grows into the periungual dermis. It most frequently affects the hallux and has a biphasic presentation, being most common in the second and fifth decades. It is often painful and may be debilitating in severe cases. Risk factors include trauma, weight changes, poor nail-cutting technique, and hyperhidrosis. Both conservative and surgical treatments have been described, and choice of therapy is dependent on patient co-morbidities, severity, and associated symptoms. This review covers the epidemiology, risks factors, pathogenesis, evaluation, and staging of ingrown toenails, as well as, treatment options. Although there is an unmet need for clinical trials comparing therapies, current recommendations are to treat conservatively and then proceed to surgical therapies if symptoms persist
