In November 2012, the UK Department for International Development (DFID) set the terms of reference for a commissioned assessment of fisheries and aquaculture science. The task was to complete a "scoping review", consisting of an in-depth assessment of the existing evidence related to fisheries and aquaculture activities in developing countries and their contribution to economic growth, food security and nutrition. For this the assessment was expected to identify the existing evidence and 'evidence in the pipeline' (i.e. to be published imminently) from the existing literature, compile it, and provide an assessment of the strength (in the sense, scientific rigor) of that evidence, and identify knowledge or evidence gaps. In addition the assessment was to be complemented by a mapping of existing relevant interventions in fisheries and aquaculture. In order to conduct this assessment, the team of consultants adopted a six step methodological protocol that allowed them to assess in a consistent manner the scientific quality of the documents included in the assessment, based on quality, size and consistency of the evidence. After scanning, 202 documents were retained. The main evidences from these 202 documents were organised under two main threads: (i) Developmental outcomes, including food security; nutrition; health; economic growth and (ii) Mediating factors focusing on governance; and gender

Rapidly reconfigurable optically induced photonic crystals in hot rubidium vapor

    Get PDF
Through periodic index modulation, we create two different types of photonic structures in a heated rubidium vapor for controlled reflection, transmission and diffraction of light. The modulation is achieved through the use of the AC Stark effect resulting from a standing-wave control field. The periodic intensity structures create translationally invariant index profiles analogous to photonic crystals in spectral regions of steep dispersion. Experimental results are consistent with modeling.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

A farmer’s guide to organic fruit and vegetable production

    Get PDF
This guide is aimed at farmers who are considering diversification into horticulture. It assumes a sound and system-based understanding of agricultural systems, but limited knowledge of fruit and vegetable production. It gives a general introduction on organic systems and soil fertility components including factors and examples of successful crop rotation. For the main pests and diseases simple and system-based measures are highlighted, as e.g. considering the right timing of control measures, crop rotations and tillage. For weed management weeding machinery is briefly explained. Basic questions on how to choose the right variety and the equipment for weeding, harvest, and storage are discussed. Additionally, the guide gives a rough overview and understanding of energy and greenhouse gas emissions and possible adaptation measures on farm level. The economic aspect are separately highlighted with a given example. Summing up, horticultural farmers, get an overall guideline to establish a system sound production of field and fruit vegetables, including fertility building strategies and protective structures. Useful addresses of advice services, certification bodies and research Centres are listed up for Welsh farmers
