Compositions and medical devices for controlled release of nitric oxide and methods of production thereof
The present disclosure describes compositions providing for controlled release of nitric oxide (NO) and methods for production of these compositions. In some embodiments, the compositions may include a biodegradable polymer and a nitric oxide-releasing material at least partially encapsulated by the biodegradable polymer. Nitric oxide-releasing materials may include, for example, diazeniumdiolates and nitric oxide contained within a zeolite, metal-organic framework or other porous material. In general, the compositions are spun into a porous fiber, which may be further annealed by heating in order to densify the fiber. Annealing may prolong the NO release profile. Medical devices containing the compositions described herein are also contemplated by the present disclosure. Medical devices include, for example, textiles, bandages and articles of clothing.Board of Regents, University of Texas Syste

Multi-Channel Stochastic Variational Inference for the Joint Analysis of Heterogeneous Biomedical Data in Alzheimer's Disease
The joint analysis of biomedical data in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is
important for better clinical diagnosis and to understand the relationship
between biomarkers. However, jointly accounting for heterogeneous measures
poses important challenges related to the modeling of the variability and the
interpretability of the results. These issues are here addressed by proposing a
novel multi-channel stochastic generative model. We assume that a latent
variable generates the data observed through different channels (e.g., clinical
scores, imaging, ...) and describe an efficient way to estimate jointly the
distribution of both latent variable and data generative process. Experiments
on synthetic data show that the multi-channel formulation allows superior data
reconstruction as opposed to the single channel one. Moreover, the derived
lower bound of the model evidence represents a promising model selection
criterion. Experiments on AD data show that the model parameters can be used
for unsupervised patient stratification and for the joint interpretation of the
heterogeneous observations. Because of its general and flexible formulation, we
believe that the proposed method can find important applications as a general
data fusion technique.Comment: accepted for presentation at MLCN 2018 workshop, in Conjunction with

Mid-infrared broadband modulation instability and 50 dB Raman assisted parametric gain in silicon photonic wires
Abstract: We demonstrate broadband modulation instability, > 40 dB parametric amplification with on-chip gain bandwidth > 580 nm, and narrowband Raman-assisted peak on-chip gain exceeding 50 dB, using mid-infrared dispersion-engineered silicon nanophotonic wires

A simple method for estimating in vitro air-tissue and in vivo blood-tissue partition coefficients
YesA simple method is reported for the estimation of in vivo air-tissue partition coefficients of VOCs and of in vitro blood-tissue partition coefficients for volatile organic compounds and other compounds. Linear free energy relationships for tissues such as brain, muscle, liver, lung, kidney, heart, skin and fat are available and once the Abraham descriptors are known for a compound, no more than simple arithmetic is required to estimate air-tissue and blood-tissue partitions
Scalar Decay in Chaotic Mixing
I review the local theory of mixing, which focuses on infinitesimal blobs of
scalar being advected and stretched by a random velocity field. An advantage of
this theory is that it provides elegant analytical results. A disadvantage is
that it is highly idealised. Nevertheless, it provides insight into the
mechanism of chaotic mixing and the effect of random fluctuations on the rate
of decay of the concentration field of a passive scalar.Comment: 35 pages, 15 figures. Springer-Verlag conference style svmult.cls

Anisotropic Magnetoconductance in Quench-Condensed Ultrathin Beryllium Films
Near the superconductor-insulator (S-I) transition, quench-condensed
ultrathin Be films show a large magnetoconductance which is highly anisotropic
in the direction of the applied field. Film conductance can drop as much as
seven orders of magnitude in a weak perpendicular field (< 1 T), but is
insensitive to a parallel field in the same field range. We believe that this
negative magnetoconductance is due to the field de-phasing of the
superconducting pair wavefunction. This idea enables us to extract the finite
superconducting phase coherence length in nearly superconducting films. Our
data indicate that this local phase coherence persists even in highly
insulating films in the vicinity of the S-I transition.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure RevTex, Typos Correcte
Deflection of coronal rays by remote CMEs: shock wave or magnetic pressure?
We analyze five events of the interaction of coronal mass ejections (CMEs)
with the remote coronal rays located up to 90^\circ away from the CME as
observed by the SOHO/LASCO C2 coronagraph. Using sequences of SOHO/LASCO C2
images, we estimate the kink propagation in the coronal rays during their
interaction with the corresponding CMEs ranging from 180 to 920 km/s within the
interval of radial distances form 3 R. to 6 R. . We conclude that all studied
events do not correspond to the expected pattern of shock wave propagation in
the corona. Coronal ray deflection can be interpreted as the influence of the
magnetic field of a moving flux rope related to a CME. The motion of a
large-scale flux rope away from the Sun creates changes in the structure of
surrounding field lines, which are similar to the kink propagation along
coronal rays. The retardation of the potential should be taken into account
since the flux rope moves at high speed comparable with the Alfven speed.Comment: Accepted for Publication in Solar Physic
Indication, from Pioneer 10/11, Galileo, and Ulysses Data, of an Apparent Anomalous, Weak, Long-Range Acceleration
Radio metric data from the Pioneer 10/11, Galileo, and Ulysses spacecraft
indicate an apparent anomalous, constant, acceleration acting on the spacecraft
with a magnitude cm/s, directed towards the Sun.
Two independent codes and physical strategies have been used to analyze the
data. A number of potential causes have been ruled out. We discuss future
kinematic tests and possible origins of the signal.Comment: Revtex, 4 pages and 1 figure. Minor changes for publicatio
