Yukawa couplings from magnetized D-brane models on non-factorisable tori
We compute Yukawa couplings in type IIB string theory compactified on a non
factorisable six-torus in the presence of D9 branes and fluxes. The setting
studied in detail, is obtained by T-dualising an intersecting brane
configuration of type IIA theory compactified on a torus generated by the
SO(12) root lattice. Particular deformations of such torus are taken into
account and provide moduli dependent couplings. Agreement with the type IIA
result is found in a non trivial way. The classical type IIB calculation gives
also information on a factor accessible only by quantum computations on the
type IIA side.Comment: 35 pages, v2 references adde
Policy Analysis in Prioritising Societal Challenges- the Case of Sri Lanka
The 30-year war ended in Sri Lanka in 2009. Country is now heading towards local, regional
and national development through the development of infrastructure and services. However,
there are obstacles along the way in achieving the required development targets set by the different levels of governments. These obstacles, for the purpose of this paper, can be identified as ‘societal challenges’. According to the largest ever research and innovation programme of the
European Union named as Horizon 2020, there are seven areas of societal challenges, i.e.
Health, demographic change and wellbeing; Food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry,
marine and maritime and inland water research, and the Bioeconomy; Secure, clean and efficient energy; Smart, green and integrated transport; Climate action, environment, resource
efficiency and raw materials; Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies; and Secure societies.
According to the EU, these seven societal challenges that need to be addressed for a country to prosper and move towards development. However, especially for a developing nation like Sri
Lanka it is difficult to address these seven challenges all at once. It should happen as a
systematic approach on a long-term basis. The paper, in this context, intends to investigate, of
the seven challenges, which is/are the critical societal challenge(s) to be addressed first in the
case of Sri Lanka. This is investigated using a questionnaire survey. Addressing the challenges
needs to happen as a top-down approach. One of the first steps towards that is the implementation of effective policies. Therefore, the main focus of the questionnaire survey is to assess the availability and effectiveness of policies in relation to addressing the societal challenges. The survey was conducted among 54 Sri Lankan experts on the seven areas of challenges.

The findings reveal that secure societies is the most critical challenge to be addressed followed
by climate action. According to the policy analysis, ‘health, demographic change and wellbeing’ is identified as the challenge, which has the highest number of related policies whilst the inclusive, innovative and reflective societies have the least. It is further revealed that the correlation between the availability of policies and their effectiveness are not always linear
Effect of light environment experienced by the parent plant on the establishment of Brachiaria decumbens stem cuttings
An experiment was conducted in a glass house at the University of New England. Armidale, N.S.W., Australia to investigate the effect on light environment of the parent plant onm the establishment performance of Brachiaria decumbens stapf. The light treatments were 100perc. day light in the glass house (full day light), 60perc. and 30perc. of full day light. Overall results demonstrated that the stem cuttings taken from full day light treatment produced higher number of tillers, arger leaf area and higher dry weights of tops and roots than the rest of the treatment. Stem cuttings obtained from 60perc. light treatment appeared to be superior to 30 perc. light treatment. The results suggeste that parent plants of Brachiaria species raised on young coconut plantations on senile plantations would bemore suitable as a source of planting aterial than those grown on mature plantations for commercial cultivation of grasses
Facilities Management Approach For Achieving Sustainability in Commercial Buildings in Nigeria
The purpose of this research is to determine the extent of sustainable facilities management (FM) practice in the management of commercial buildings in Nigeria and identify barriers to it, in order to develop a solution model that will proffer ways of overcoming these barriers and ultimately determine sustainable methods by which facility managers in Nigeria can effectively manage commercial properties. This study is a work in progress and it presents a theoretical review on the extent of sustainable FM in developed countries, especially the United Kingdom (UK), and comparing it with the development of sustainable FM in developing countries and Nigeria in particular. Nigeria has a history of unsustainable building practices, mismanagement of buildings and poor maintenance culture with no consideration for its impact on the environment. Findings reveal the three main barriers to sustainable FM practice in corporate organisations in Nigeria, as lack of training and tools, lack of relevant laws and regulation, and lack of knowledge and awareness. Nevertheless, there remains the urgent need to investigate barriers of sustainable FM practice in the management of commercial buildings in Nigeria
