    Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov description of the deformed ground-state proton emitters

    Ground-state properties of deformed proton-rich odd-Z nuclei in the region 59Z6959 \leq Z \leq 69 are described in the framework of Relativistic Hartree Bogoliubov (RHB) theory. One-proton separation energies and ground-state quadrupole deformations that result from fully self-consistent microscopic calculations are compared with available experimental data. The model predicts the location of the proton drip-line, the properties of proton emitters beyond the drip-line, and provides information about the deformed single-particle orbitals occupied by the odd valence proton.Comment: 9 pages, RevTeX, 3 PS figures, submitted Phys.     Pairing Properties In Relativistic Mean Field Models Obtained From Effective Field Theory

    We apply recently developed effective field theory nuclear models in mean field approximation (parameter sets G1 and G2) to describe ground-state properties of nuclei from the valley of β\beta-stability up to the drip lines. For faster calculations of open-shell nuclei we employ a modified BCS approach which takes into account quasi-bound levels owing to their centrifugal barrier, with a constant pairing strength. We test this simple prescription by comparing with available Hartree-plus-Bogoliubov results. Using the new effective parameter sets we then compute separation energies, density distributions and spin--orbit potentials in isotopic (isotonic) chains of nuclei with magic neutron (proton) numbers. The new forces describe the experimental systematics similarly to conventional non-linear σω\sigma-\omega relativistic force parameters like NL3.Comment: 29 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in PR

    Continuum effects for the mean-field and pairing properties of weakly bound nuclei

    Continuum effects in the weakly bound nuclei close to the drip-line are investigated using the analytically soluble Poschl-Teller-Ginocchio potential. Pairing correlations are studied within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method. We show that both resonant and non-resonant continuum phase space is active in creating the pairing field.     A Dirac-Hartree-Bogoliubov approximation for finite nuclei

    We develop a complete Dirac-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation to the ground state wave function and energy of finite nuclei. We apply it to spin-zero proton-proton and neutron-neutron pairing within the Dirac-Hartree-Bogoliubov approximation (we neglect the Fock term), using a zero-range approximation to the relativistic pairing tensor. We study the effects of the pairing on the properties of the even-even nuclei of the isotopic chains of Ca, Ni and Sn (spherical) and Kr and Sr (deformed), as well as the NN=28 isotonic chain, and compare our results with experimental data and with other recent calculations.Comment: 43 pages, RevTex, 13 figure

    Ground-state properties of spherical even-even nuclei 14Z2814\leq Z \leq 28 and N=18,20,22N=18,20,22 are described in the framework of Relativistic Hartree Bogoliubov (RHB) theory. The model uses the NL3 effective interaction in the mean-field Lagrangian, and describes pairing correlations by the pairing part of the finite range Gogny interaction D1S. Binding energies, two-proton separation energies, and proton rmsrms radii that result from fully self-consistent RHB solutions are compared with experimental data. The model predicts the location of the proton drip-line.     Shell Effects in Nuclei with Vector Self-Coupling of Omega Meson in Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov Theory

    Shell effects in nuclei about the stability line are investigated within the framework of the Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) theory with self-consistent finite-range pairing. Using 2-neutron separation energies of Ni and Sn isotopes, the role of σ\sigma- and ω\omega-meson couplings on the shell effects in nuclei is examined. It is observed that the existing successful nuclear forces (Lagrangian parameter sets) based upon the nonlinear scalar coupling of σ\sigma-meson exhibit shell effects which are stronger than suggested by the experimental data. We have introduced nonlinear vector self-coupling of ω\omega-meson in the RHB theory. It is shown that the inclusion of the vector self-coupling of ω\omega-meson in addition to the nonlinear scalar coupling of σ\sigma-meson provides a good agreement with the experimental data on shell effects in nuclei about the stability line. A comparison of the shell effects in the RHB theory is made with the Hartree-Fock Bogoliubov approach using the Skyrme force SkP. It is shown that the oft-discussed shell quenching with SkP is not consistent with the available experimental data.Comment: 34 pages latex, 18 ps figures, replaced with minor corrections in some figures, accepted for publication in Phys.     Determination of the optimal pH for doxorubicin encapsulation in polymeric micelles

    Hypothesis The anticancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DX) shows a high solubility in aqueous media thanks to the positive charge in the ammonium group. This feature, however, affects the drug encapsulation in the hydrophobic domains of polymeric micelles (PMs) used for the targeted delivery of the drug. At basic pH, DX deprotonates but also acquires a negative charge in the phenolic groups of the anthracycline structure. Both the efficiency and the rate of encapsulation will be increased by choosing an appropriate pH such that the drug molecule is in neutral form. Experiments An optimal pH for the encapsulation of the DX in PMs based on commercial poloxamers and on the diblock copolymer methoxy-poly(ethylene glycol)17-b-poly(ε-caprolactone)9 was determined by fluorescence spectroscopy, following the time evolution of both the intensity ratio of the first and the second emission bands of DX and its fluorescence lifetime, both sensitive to the environment polarity. Intracellular delivery of PMs encapsulated drug was followed by Confocal Scanning Laser Microscopy (CSLM). Cell viability was assessed with the sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay. Findings By adjusting pH to 8.1 a high yield of incorporation of DX in the PMs was achieved coupled to an appreciable increase (one order of magnitude) in the drug encapsulation rate. In-vitro tests in selected cancer cell lines showed the slow release of the drug and a delay in the cytotoxic response in comparison to free DX as detected by CSLM and SRB assay. The proposed methodology paves the way for a greener, faster and more efficient encapsulation of DX in PMs

    Holocene and ‘Little Ice Age’ glacial activity in the Marboré Cirque, Monte Perdido Massif, Central Spanish Pyrenees

    The Marboré Cirque, which is located in the southern Central Pyrenees on the north face of the Monte Perdido Peak (42°40′0″N; 0.5°0″W; 3355 m), contains a wide variety of Holocene glacial and periglacial deposits, and those from the ‘Little Ice Age’ (‘LIA’) are particularly well developed. Based on geomorphological mapping, cosmogenic exposure dating and previous studies of lacustrine sediment cores, the different deposits were dated and a sequence of geomorphological and paleoenvironmental events was established as follows: (1) The Marboré Cirque was at least partially deglaciated before 12.7 kyr BP. (2) Some ice masses are likely to have persisted in the Early Holocene, although their moraines were destroyed by the advance of glaciers during the Mid Holocene and ‘LIA’. (3) A glacial expansion occurred during the Mid Holocene (5.1 ± 0.1 kyr), represented by a large push moraine that enclosed a unique ice mass at the foot of the Monte Perdido Massif. (4) A melting phase occurred at approximately 3.4 ± 0.2 and 2.5 ± 0.1 kyr (Bronze/Iron Ages) after one of the most important glacial advances of the Neoglacial period. (5) Another glacial expansion occurred during the Dark Age Cold Period (1.4–1.2 kyr), followed by a melting period during the Medieval Climate Anomaly. (6) The ‘LIA’ represented a clear stage of glacial expansion within the Marboré Cirque. Two different pulses of glaciation were detected, separated by a short retraction. The first pulse occurred most likely during the late 17th century or early 18th century (Maunder Minimum), whereas the second occurred between 1790 and ad 1830 (Dalton Minimum). A strong deglaciation process has affected the Marboré Cirque glaciers since the middle of the 19th century.     Making sense of local knowledge and indigenous practices on health and biosecurity risk management

    The potential for zoonotic emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) to spread worldwide is immense. Geographical boundaries can be uncertain and management of disease crises, biosecurity and health risks is a huge task that requires cooperation and understanding from many parts of the public and private sectors. A glimpse of this has been seen over the years during epidemics, including the bovine spongiform encephalopathy or mad cow disease outbreak in the United Kingdom, Hendra virus outbreaks among horses in Australia, Nipah virus spread in Malaysia and Singapore, and the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreaks in Asia. In the last decade, highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 (HPAI H5N1), or ‘bird flu’, outbreaks have also been a focus of global attention. These zoonotic EIDs have predominantly affected countries in South-East Asia. Why is this so? One obvious factor is the way animals are raised, slaugh¬tered and prepared for food consumption. There are certain animal-rearing practices and human health beliefs in countries in the region that need to be recognised before control programs can be designed. Governance and institutional systems also function differently in countries in the region, affecting the enactment of policies to support biosecurity risk management and preparedness. International non-government organisations, donor agencies and other humanitarian organisations have supported countries in the region to help eradicate HPAI H5N1. Assistance is given through technical and funding support necessary to build local capacity for disease control, as well as to institute prepared¬ness plans and manage health and biosecurity risks. Resources are poured into the establishment of emergency plans and protocols to prepare for a possible influenza pandemic to minimise global catastrophe

    Effects of new nonlinear couplings in relativistic effective field theory

    We extend the relativistic mean field theory model of Sugahara and Toki by adding new couplings suggested by modern effective field theories. An improved set of parameters is developed with the goal to test the ability of the models based on effective field theory to describe the properties of finite nuclei and, at the same time, to be consistent with the trends of Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations at densities away from the saturation region. We compare our calculations with other relativistic nuclear force parameters for various nuclear phenomena
