Further evidence of tetragonality in bainitic ferrite

    Get PDF
There is growing evidence that bainitic ferrite which retains a substantial amount of carbon in solid solution does not have cubic symmetry. We provide additional data on a different nanostructured bainitic steel to support this evidence, based on synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments. The data are consistent only with a displacive transformation mechanism for bainite. </jats:p

Different Deformation Mechanisms Leading to Auxetic Behavior Exhibited by Missing Rib Square Grid Structures

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Wiley via the DOI in this recordAn extensive investigation is carried out on the missing rib square grid structure using finite element simulations. This showed that, in the cases considered in this study, the type of deformation is primarily dependent on the ratio of the thickness of different ribs with the structure behaving like an anti-tetrachiral at particular ratios. The analysis also showed that the ability of the structure to deform predominantly through the bending of the ligament allows it to achieve much more negative values of the Poisson's ratio than previously reported. Confirmation of the numerical results is obtained through experimental methods involving the 3D printing of representative structures which are subsequently subjected to compression.European Regional Development Fun

Shallow depth reflection seismic is analyzed with respect to its applicability to imaging a fracturedpotential reservoir. Methods, procedures and equipments used in this type of survey are critically discussed.Initially, refraction and walkaway data were acquired to provide information on the seismic response of thestudy area and so determining the high resolution, shallow depth reflection seismic acquisition parameters, which constitutes the main target of the research. A quick data processing is carried out simply to allow for thecorrelation of the seismic data with geological information and to validate the choice of the acquisitionparameters. Seismic results are correlated with borehole and surface geology data. The use of shallow depthreflection seismic is so applied for the first time to make the image of the fractured sandstones of the ItararéGroup, generating seismic images which contribute to the geological knowledge of the study area and givesupport to the study of outcrops which resemble fractured potential reservoirs

Textural record of an intra-oceanic subduction: the Careón ophiolite (NW Spain)

    Get PDF
Texture analyses were done in mylonitic amphibolites from the Careón ophiolite (Órdenes Complex, NW Iberia). Experiments were carried out using time-of-flight (TOF) neutron diffraction and electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) techniques to determine crystallographic preferred orientation of the principal phases. While both techniques appear to be complimentary, neutron diffraction plus Rietveld data refinement showed better resolution of low-symmetry phases. Results are discussed within the geological context (Gómez Barreiro et al., 2007a) supporting a continuous deformative evolution from the closure of the Rheic Ocean to the Variscan accretion

COVID-19 Pandemic School Disruptions and Acute Mental Health in Children and Adolescents

Importance There are suggestions that school pressure may be stressful and a factor in child and adolescent mental health disturbances, but data about this association are scarce and inconclusive. Objective To assess whether varying degrees of school interruption were associated with changes in emergency department (ED) psychiatric visits of children and adolescents before and after the COVID-19 outbreak. Design, Setting, and Participants A cross-sectional observational study was conducted at 9 urban university hospitals in Italy. All ED visits from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2021, for psychiatric reasons of patients younger than 18 years were examined for demographic characteristics and type of psychopathologic factors. Data analysis was conducted from July 1 to August 31, 2023. Exposure The disruption in the usual succession of school and holiday periods brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic at different times and with various degrees of intensity. Main Outcomes and Measures Total number of pediatric ED visits, psychiatric ED visits, and psychiatric ED visits categorized by specific reasons (eg, psychomotor agitation, suicide ideation [SI] or suicide attempt [SA], and eating disorders) on a weekly basis. Results A total of 13 014 psychiatric ED visits (1.3% of all pediatric ED visits) were recorded (63.2% females; mean [SD] age, 13.8 [3.8] years). The number of ED psychiatric visits increased over time (incidence rate ratio [IRR], 1.19; 95% CI, 1.16-1.22 for each year). Significant increases in ED visits were observed for eating disorders (294.8%), SI (297.8%), and SA (249.1%). School opening, but not social lockdown restriction, was associated with an increase in the number of ED psychiatric visits (IRR, 1.29; 95% CI, 1.23-1.34), which was evident for females and for SI with SA. Socioeconomic status was associated with an increase in psychiatric visits for males (IRR, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.04-1.20) but not females (IRR, 1.04; 95% CI, 0.98-1.10). Conclusions and Relevance In this study, school opening was associated with an increased incidence of acute psychiatric emergencies among children and adolescents, suggesting that school can be a substantial source of stress with acute mental health implications
