The Berry-Tabor conjecture for spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type
According to a long-standing conjecture of Berry and Tabor, the distribution
of the spacings between consecutive levels of a "generic'' integrable model
should follow Poisson's law. In contrast, the spacings distribution of chaotic
systems typically follows Wigner's law. An important exception to the
Berry-Tabor conjecture is the integrable spin chain with long-range
interactions introduced by Haldane and Shastry in 1988, whose spacings
distribution is neither Poissonian nor of Wigner's type. In this letter we
argue that the cumulative spacings distribution of this chain should follow the
"square root of a logarithm'' law recently proposed by us as a characteristic
feature of all spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type. We also show in detail that
the latter law is valid for the rational counterpart of the Haldane-Shastry

High Resolution Imaging of the Magnetic Field in the central parsec of the Galaxy
We discuss a high resolution (FWHM~ 0.45 arcsec) image of the emissive
polarization from warm dust in the minispiral in the Galactic Centre and
discuss the implications for the magnetic field in the dusty filaments. The
image was obtained at a wavelength of 12.5 microns with the CanariCam multimode
mid-infrared imager on the Gran Telescopio Canarias. It confirms the results
obtained from previous observations but also reveals new details of the
polarization structures. In particular, we identify regions of coherent
magnetic field emission at position angles of ~45 deg to the predominantly
north--south run of field lines in the Northern Arm which may be related to
orbital motions inclined to the general flow of the Northern Arm. The luminous
stars that have been identified as bow-shock sources in the Northern Arm do not
disrupt or dilute the field but are linked by a coherent field structure,
implying that the winds from these objects may push and compress the field but
do not overwhelm it. The magnetic field in the the low surface brightness
regions in the East-West Bar to the south of SgrA* lies along the Bar, but the
brighter regions generally have different polarization position angles,
suggesting that they are distinct structures. In the region of the Northern Arm
sampled here, there is only a weak correlation between the intensity of the
emission and the degree of polarization. This is consistent with saturated
grain alignment where the degree of polarization depends on geometric effects,
including the angle of inclination of the field to the line of sight and
superposition of filaments with different field directions, rather than the

Iterative Structural and Functional Synergistic Resolution Recovery (iSFS-RR) Applied to PET-MR Images in Epilepsy
Structural Functional Synergistic Resolution Recovery (SFS-RR) is a technique that uses supplementary structural information from MR or CT to improve the spatial resolution of PET or SPECT images. This wavelet-based method may have a potential impact on the clinical decision-making of brain focal disorders such as refractory epilepsy, since it can produce images with better quantitative accuracy and enhanced detectability. In this work, a method for the iterative application of SFS-RR (iSFS-RR) was firstly developed and optimized in terms of convergence and input voxel size, and the corrected images were used for the diagnosis of 18 patients with refractory epilepsy. To this end, PET/MR images were clinically evaluated through visual inspection, atlas-based asymmetry indices (AIs) and SPM (Statistical Parametric Mapping) analysis, using uncorrected images and images corrected with SFS-RR and iSFS-RR. Our results showed that the sensitivity can be increased from 78% for uncorrected images, to 84% for SFS-RR and 94% for the proposed iSFS-RR. Thus, the proposed methodology has demonstrated the potential to improve the management of refractory epilepsy patients in the clinical routine
Multi-Generational Star Formation in L1551
The L1551 molecular cloud contains two small clusters of Class 0 and I
protostars, as well as a halo of more evolved Class II and III YSOs, indicating
a current and at least one past burst of star formation. We present here new,
sensitive maps of 850 and 450 um dust emission covering most of the L1551
cloud, new CO J=2-1 data of the molecular cloud, and a new, deep, optical image
of [SII] emission. No new Class 0/I YSOs were detected. Compact sub-millimetre
emitters are concentrated in two sub-clusters: IRS5 and L1551NE, and the
HL~Tauri group. Both stellar groups show significant extended emission and
outflow/jet activity. A jet, terminating at HH 265 and with a very weak
associated molecular outflow, may originate from LkHa 358, or from a binary
companion to another member of the HL Tauri group. Several Herbig Haro objects
associated with IRS5/NE were clearly detected in the sub-mm, as were faint
ridges of emission tracing outflow cavity walls. We confirm a large-scale
molecular outflow originating from NE parallel to that from IRS5, and suggest
that the "hollow shell" morphology is more likely due to two interacting
outflows. We confirm the presence of a prestellar core (L1551-MC) of mass 2-3
Mo north-west of IRS5. The next generation cluster may be forming in this core.
The L1551 cloud appears cometary in morphology, and appears to be illuminated
and eroded from the direction of Orion, perhaps explaining the multiple
episodes of star formation in this cloud. The full paper (including figures)

Association of VAV2 and VAV3 polymorphisms with cardiovascular risk factors
Hypertension, diabetes and obesity are cardiovascular risk factors closely associated to the development of renal and cardiovascular target organ damage. VAV2 and VAV3, members of the VAV family proto-oncogenes, are guanosine nucleotide exchange factors for the Rho and Rac GTPase family, which is related with cardiovascular homeostasis. We have analyzed the relationship between the presence of VAV2 rs602990 and VAV3 rs7528153 polymorphisms with cardiovascular risk factors and target organ damage (heart, vessels and kidney) in 411 subjects. Our results show that being carrier of the T allele in VAV2 rs602990 polymorphism is associated with an increased risk of obesity, reduced levels of ankle-brachial index and diastolic blood pressure and reduced retinal artery caliber. In addition, being carrier of T allele is associated with increased risk of target organ damage in males. On the other hand, being carrier of the T allele in VAV3 rs7528153 polymorphism is associated with a decreased susceptibility of developing a pathologic state composed by the presence of hypertension, diabetes, obesity or cardiovascular damage, and with an increased risk of developing altered basal glycaemia. This is the first report showing an association between VAV2 and VAV3 polymorphisms with cardiovascular risk factors and target organ damage
