    Get PDF

A benchmark study on identification of inelastic parameters based on deep drawing processes using pso – nelder mead hybrid approach

    Get PDF
Optimization techniques have been increasingly used to identification of inelastic material parameters owing to their generality. Development of robust techniques to solving this class of inverse problems has been a challenge to researchers mainly due to the nonlinear character of the problem and behaviour of the objective function. Within this framework, this work discusses application of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and a PSO – Nelder Mead hybrid approach to identification of inelastic parameters based on a benchmark solution of the deep drawing process

This research was carried out to evaluate the possibility of reuse of a tannery treated effluent. The experimental procedure compared the production of leather made by the use of drinking water, extracted from artesian wells, to leather produced by the use of the final treated liquid effluent. In order to achieve this goal, physic-chemical tests were carried out in laboratory (chemical and physical resistance analysis) and leather industry professionals performed organoleptic evaluations (for color, grain firmness, filling and touch). The analytical evaluation and the organoleptic properties evaluation do not indicate a statistically significant difference when compared to ABNT reference standards of produced leathers, what allows the researchers to conclude that the reuse of treated effluent does not change the appearance of leather goods.</div

    Get PDF

Boundary-Layer Instability Measurements in a Mach-6 Quiet Tunnel

Several experiments have been performed in the Boeing/AFOSR Mach-6 Quiet Tunnel at Purdue University. A 7 degree half angle cone at 6 degree angle of attack with temperature-sensitive paint (TSP) and PCB pressure transducers was tested under quiet flow. The stationary crossflow vortices appear to break down to turbulence near the lee ray for sufficiently high Reynolds numbers. Attempts to use roughness elements to control the spacing of hot streaks on a flared cone in quiet flow did not succeed. Roughness was observed to damp the second-mode waves in areas influenced by the roughness, and wide roughness spacing allowed hot streaks to form between the roughness elements. A forward-facing cavity was used for proof-of-concept studies for a laser perturber. The lowest density at which the freestream laser perturbations could be detected was 1.07 x 10(exp -2) kilograms per cubic meter. Experiments were conducted to determine the transition characteristics of a streamwise corner flow at hypersonic velocities. Quiet flow resulted in a delayed onset of hot streak spreading. Under low Reynolds number flow hot streak spreading did not occur along the model. A new shock tube has been built at Purdue. The shock tube is designed to create weak shocks suitable for calibrating sensors, particularly PCB-132 sensors. PCB-132 measurements in another shock tube show the shock response and a linear calibration over a moderate pressure range

Re-Entangling Design and Science Fiction: The Case of Daleko

    Get PDF
The present article discusses how speculative design relates to technoscientific extrapolation, an important science fiction feature, to plan for potential scenarios and prototype viable models of futurity. Through it, the paper outlines some important nuances between different approaches concerning speculative design’s role, considering their particular epistemological assumptions. A specific case is presented and discussed: Daleko (2020), a project developed for the Strelka Institute’s Terraforming program. This project consists of nine science fiction pieces that entangle issues of waste management, technical infrastructure, and climate politics, discussing the problematic conception of waste as a form of externality and imagining future scenarios for managing it through a more holistic perspective. By analysing Daleko’s approach to speculative design, in its final section the article suggests further developing speculative projects in contexts of design education. This would serve towards stimulating designers to ponder how their craft relates to anthropogenic impact and how it can play a decisive role in prospecting more viable future scenarios

    Ashes, by Steve McQueen

    Get PDF
This review covers the experience of visiting Ashes, a video installation by Steve McQueen, exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Art, in Boston. It explores the expectations, surprises and reflections raised by the work and the way McQueen introduces, through the image, the question of memory

Input-state-output representations and constructions of finite-support 2D convolutional codes

    Get PDF
Two-dimensional convolutional codes are considered, with codewords having compact support indexed in N^2 and taking values in F^n, where F is a finite field. Input-state-output representations of these codes are introduced and several aspects of such representations are discussed. Constructive procedures of such codes with a designed distance are also presented. © 2010 AIMS-SDU
