Analysis of wind tunnel test results for a 9.39-per cent scale model of a VSTOL fighter/attack aircraft. Volume 1: Study overview
The ability of current methodologies to accurately predict the aerodynamic characteristics identified as uncertainties was evaluated for two aircraft configurations. The two wind tunnel models studied horizontal altitude takeoff and landing V/STOL fighter aircraft derivatives
Supply chain options for biobased businesses
This research paper investigates and evaluates the supply chain structures currently being used in biobased businesses, as well as presenting corollary examples of supply chains in businesses of all types (in the United States and abroad)
Analysis of wind tunnel test results for a 9.39-per cent scale model of a VSTOL fighter/attack aircraft. Volume 3: Effects of configuration variations from baseline
The aerodynamic characteristics of the components of the baseline E205 configuration is presented. Geometric variations from the baseline E205 configuration are also given including a matrix of conrad longitudinal locations and strake shapes
Perceptions of required leadership behaviors for nurse leaders as measured by the leadership practices inventory
In the United States a significant nursing shortage exists. To compound this shortage, the health care system is in need of reform. In order to impact effectively these issues, strong nursing leadership will be critical. Historically, nursing education has focused primarily on clinical judgment and the nurse-patient relationship. Leadership education and mentoring has been limited. Because nursing theory does not emphasize leadership development, it is important to investigate the possible use of existing leadership theory and assessment tools from other disciplines and bring them to the nursing environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of required leadership characteristics for nurse leaders as measured by the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), as well as investigate the use of the transformational leadership model. A sample of 100 registered nurses completed an opinion survey utilizing the LPI with a modified 5-point metric (1 = not important, 3 = fairly important, 5 = very important). The results demonstrated the top three characteristics: Sets a personal example of what I expect from others (M = 4.99), Treats others with dignity and respect (M = 4.97), and Develops cooperative relationships among the people I work with (M = 4.87). The three lowest ranked characteristics were identified as: Describes a compelling image of what the future could be like (M = 3.97); Experiments and takes risks, even when there is a chance of failure (M = 4.00); and Appeals to others to share an exciting dream of the future (M = 4.03). This study also investigated the correlations between those leadership perceptions and the background characteristics of the nurse respondent. Based on the results of this study and from the review of the literature, it appears that there is a great opportunity for nursing leadership to take on a new approach to leadership development and selection of future nurse leaders. Through further investigation and research, additional insights will be discovered, and a greater understanding of what is required to provide effective leadership training and mentoring to future nurse leaders will develop
Quilt or quilts : do the national environmental organizations speak for the grassroots environmental organizations
This thesis asks whether or not the national environmental organizations represent the interests of the grassroots environmental organizations. In order to answer this question another must first be addressed: how do the two wings differ? This study uses data collected from local grassroots activists who attended Stop The Poisoning (STP) workshops sponsored by Highlander Research and Education Center in the fall of 1990. This original data is used to compare the grassroots activists with national environmental activists as they have been represented in previous studies of environmental activism. I compare my data with the previous literature in order to assess the linkages between national and grassroots participants in the Environmental Movement. The hypothesis is that these two wings are different, with local activists more strongly supportive of political and economic democracy (consistent with the oppositional model of a power-elite political structure) and the national organizations tending toward stronger support for the existing political-economic system (in line with a pluralist model of the political structure). Confirmation of the hypothesis would indicate that in their lobbying efforts, the national groups do not adequately represent the participatory interests of the local organizations. The analysis of this thesis concludes that the hypothesis is supported
Investigating the Effects of Natural Environmental Factors on the Viability of Dye Tracer Testing
Dye tracer tests that use granular activated carbon (GAC) to passively detect dyes in water flowing through wells, springs, and streams offer a semi-quantitative method of characterizing flow paths in karst aquifers. Because dye tracer testing is done in the field, there are many environmental factors that could impact the adsorption of dye to GAC. This study aims to investigate the kinetic properties of dye adsorption, determine whether or not naturally-occurring tannic acid affects the sorptive capacity of dye onto GAC, and measure the impact of pH upon dye adsorption onto GAC in a controlled lab setting using batch reactors and mixed flow reactors. Our results provide insight into the competitive adsorption that fluorescent dyes may experience in natural aquifer systems, thus putting quantitative constraints on processes that could inhibit dye adsorption and lead to false negatives in dye tracer tests.
Results show that uranine dye adsorbs to GAC exponentially, following the first order rate law. GAC packets interacting with 20 ppm uranine dye are not susceptible to competitive adsorption with tannic acid, but more research needs to be conducted to determine if tannic acid can hinder concentrations near 500 ppb. Dye-water solutions with pH values near 4.5 have an inhibitory effect on adsorption due to the pH-dependent functional groups of both dye and GAC molecular structures. This research helps hydrogeologists working in karst environments understand some of the shortcomings of dye tracer testing in uncontrolled field environments
THE FORMATIVE ERA OF AMERICAN LAW, by Roscoe Pound. Little, Brown & Co., Boston, 1938. Pp. x, 188. $2.00.
Study of aerodynamic technology for VSTOL fighter/attack aircraft, volume 1
An assessment was made of the aerodynamic uncertainties associated with the design of a cold-deck-environment Navy VSTOL fighter/attack aircraft utilizing jet-diffuser ejectors for vertical lift and vectored-engine-over-wing blowing for supercirculation benefits. The critical aerodynamic uncertainties were determined as those associated with the constraints which size the aircraft to a specified set of requirements. A wind tunnel model and test programs are recommended for resolving these uncertainties
One Nation, Two Languages: Latinization and Language Reform in Turkey and Azerbaijan, 1905-1938
University of Minnesota Ph.D. dissertation. May 2021. Major: History. Advisor: Giancarlo Casale. 1 computer file (PDF); vi, 266 pages. This dissertation examines 20th-century Turkic Latinization, the process by which Turkic language reformers replaced the Perso-Arabic alphabet with the Latin-based New Turkish Alphabet, from a transnational perspective. Focusing on the Turkish and Soviet Azerbaijani cases, my work reconstructs the intellectual and nationalist networks that were forged across imperial and national boundaries and shaped the debates over language, modernization, and national identity in Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Central Asia. The ascendancy of Turkic Latinization, I argue, emerged with the rise of the Soviet and Kemalist states in the post-WWI period. These revolutionary states enacted far-reaching reforms to modernize all areas of life, and remake their respective societies in a Soviet or Kemalist mold. At the heart of both states’ political projects was language reform, which increasingly equated Latinization with reaching modernity. Though the Soviets and Kemalists ultimately envisioned different modernities, their language reforms of the Turkic language both drew from the same pool of Turcological and nationalist literature.Lummus, Wesley.
