Relaxation processes in thiophene-based random copolymers
The relaxation dynamics of soluble polyalkylthiophenes obtained by the random copolymerisation of 3,4-dibutylthiophene and 3-butylthiophene monomers is investigated. In these systems, the effective conjugation length, the optical gap and the non-radiative decay rate are controlled by varying the content of disubstituted monomers, the steric hindrance of which induces a twisting angle between thiophene rings. Several indications are reported in favour of spectral diffusion of the photoexcitations. Migration processes mainly occur within a few tens of picoseconds
Chiral Polyalkylthiophenes for Organic Light Emitting Diodes
Chiral polyalkylthiophenes are noncentrosymmetric organic materials which can be used
both in second harmonic-generation devices and in polarized light emitting diodes. In this work
we present the synthesis and the characterization of a polyalkylthiophene with a chiral center
very close to the conjugated backbone: poly(3-[(S)-2-methylbutyl]thiophene) (PMBT). Circular
dichroism (CD) measurements have been carried out to ascertain the chirality of these materials.
The CD spectra show intense signals both in mixed solvents and in the solid state. The strong
Cotton effect can be associated to a highly ordered aggregated phase whose nature is still under
investigation. We also present the photo and electroluminescence characterization of single layer
light emitting diode (LED) with the following configuration: ITO (Tin Indium Oxide)/PMBT/Al
Pressure Induced Topological Phase Transitions in Membranes
Some highly unusual features of a lipid-water liquid crystal are revealed by
high pressure x-ray diffraction, light scattering and dilatometric studies of
the lamellar (bilayer ) to nonlamellar inverse hexagonal ()
phase transition. (i) The size of the unit cell of the phase increases
with increasing pressure. (ii) The transition volume, ,
decreases and appears to vanish as the pressure is increased. (iii) The
intensity of scattered light increases as decreases. Data are
presented which suggest that this increase is due to the formation of an
intermediate cubic phase, as predicted by recent theoretical suggestions of the

Long-lived photoexcited states in polydiacetylenes with different molecular and supramolecular organization
With the aim of determining the importance of the molecular and supramolecular organization on the excited states of polydiacetylenes, we have studied the photoinduced absorption spectra of the red form of poly[1,6-bis(3,6-didodecyl-N-carbazolyl)-2,4-hexadiyne] (polyDCHD-S) and the results compared with those of the blue form of the same polymer. An interpretation of the data is given in terms of both the conjugation length and the interbackbone separation also in relation to the photoinduced absorption spectra of both blue and red forms of poly[1,6-bis(N-carbazolyl)-2,4-hexadiyne] (polyDCHD), which does not carry the alkyl substituents on the carbazolyl side groups. Information on the above properties is derived from the analysis of the absorption and Raman spectra of this class of polydiacetylenes
Tick-borne encephalitis in north-east Italy: a 14-year retrospective study, January 2000 to December 2013
Italy is considered at low incidence of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), and the occurrence of human cases of TBE appears to be geographically restricted to the north east of the country. However, most information to date derives from case series, with no systematic data collection. To estimate incidence rates (IR) and spatial distribution of TBE cases, we conducted a retrospective study in north-eastern Italy. Data were collected through the infectious disease units and public health districts of three regions (Friuli Venezia Giulia, Trentino Alto Adige and Veneto) between 2000 and 2013. Overall, 367 cases were identified (IR: 0.38/100,000). The cases' median age was 56 years and 257 (70%) were male. Central nervous system involvement was reported in 307 cases (84%). Annual fluctuations in case numbers occurred, with peaks in 2006 and in 2013, when 44 and 42 cases were respectively observed. A strong seasonality effect was noted, with the highest number of cases in July. In terms of geographical location, three main endemic foci with high TBE IR (> 10/100,000) were identified in three provinces, namely Belluno (Veneto region), Udine (Friuli Venezia Giulia) and Trento (Trentino Alto-Adige). When investigating the whole study area in terms of altitude, the IR between 400 and 600\u2009m was greater (2.41/100,000) than at other altitudes (p< 0.01). In conclusion, the incidence of TBE in Italy is relatively low, even considering only the three known affected regions. However, three endemic foci at high risk were identified. Strong-Segregation Theory of Bicontinuous Phases in Block Copolymers
We compute phase diagrams for starblock copolymers in the
strong-segregation regime as a function of volume fraction , including
bicontinuous phases related to minimal surfaces (G, D, and P surfaces) as
candidate structures. We present the details of a general method to compute
free energies in the strong segregation limit, and demonstrate that the gyroid
G phase is the most nearly stable among the bicontinuous phases considered. We
explore some effects of conformational asymmetry on the topology of the phase

ELECTROPHORETICALLY HOMOGENEOUS ANTIBODY SYNTHESIZED BY SPLEEN FOCI OF IRRADIATED REPOPULATED MICE
106 splenocytes from primed donors were injected, together with sheep erythrocytes (SRBC), into X-irradiated syngeneic mice. 8 days later the spleens were excised and cut into small fragments, keeping track of their location in the organ. Each fragment was cultured individually for 24 hr in the presence of 14C amino acids and the culture fluids were assayed for antibody activity. The antibody-producing fragments were found to be clustered in few restricted areas (foci) surrounded by negative tissue. The anti-SRBC antibody from single foci was purified by absorption on stroma followed by acid elution. Thereafter, it was subjected to electrophoresis and immunoelectrophoresis. The radioautography of the runs showed a considerable degree of homogeneity. Distinct and sharp spikes were localized in the beta and gamma region. The pattern of each focus is unique from the point of view of the number of spikes and their mobility. Eluates obtained from many pooled fragments gave a broad radioactive smear in beta-gamma region. Many foci synthesized antibody migrating as a single band. This homogeneous protein is probably the product of a clone of cells homogeneously differentiated. However, some foci producing two and probably more antibody bands were also encountered. Two interpretations of the finding can be given. Either more than one precursor may participate in the formation of a focus or a differentiation switch may occur during the clonal expansion

Watching mesoporous metal films grow during templated electrodeposition with in situ SAXS
In this paper, we monitor the real-time growth of mesoporous platinum during electrodeposition using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Previously, we have demonstrated that platinum films featuring the ‘single diamond’ (Fd3m) morphology can be produced from ‘double diamond’ (Pn3m) lipid cubic phase templates; the difference in symmetry provides additional scattering signals unique to the metal. Taking advantage of this, we present simultaneous in situ SAXS/electrochemical measurement as the platinum nanostructures grow within the lipid template. This measurement allows us to correlate the nanostructure appearance with the deposition current density and to monitor the evolution of the orientational and lateral ordering of the lipid and platinum during deposition and after template removal. In other periodic metal nanomaterials deposited within any of the normal topology liquid crystal, mesoporous silica or block copolymer templates previously published, the template and emerging metal have the same symmetry, so such a study has not been possible previously
