Optimizing One Fair Document Exchange Protocol
This paper presents an efficient fair document exchange protocol. The
exchange of the documents will be between two parties. The protocol is based on
the verifiable and recoverable encryption of a document's key. This verifiable
and recoverable encryption of the document's key will allow one party to verify
the encrypted key. It will also ensure this party that the Semi Trusted Third
Party will be able to recover the key if the other party misbehaves. The
protocol also incorporates the concept of enforcing the honesty of one party.
The proposed protocol consists of only three messages and is more efficient

Inertial sensor real-time feedback enhances the learning of cervical spine manipulation: a prospective study.
BACKGROUND: Cervical Spinal Manipulation (CSM) is considered a high-level skill of the central nervous system because it requires bimanual coordinated rhythmical movements therefore necessitating training to achieve proficiency. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of real-time feedback on the performance of CSM. METHODS: Six postgraduate physiotherapy students attending a training workshop on Cervical Spine Manipulation Technique (CSMT) using inertial sensor derived real-time feedback participated in this study. The key variables were pre-manipulative position, angular displacement of the thrust and angular velocity of the thrust. Differences between variables before and after training were investigated using t-tests. RESULTS: There were no significant differences after training for the pre-manipulative position (rotation p = 0.549; side bending p = 0.312) or for thrust displacement (rotation p = 0.247; side bending p = 0.314). Thrust angular velocity demonstrated a significant difference following training for rotation (pre-training mean (sd) 48.9°/s (35.1); post-training mean (sd) 96.9°/s (53.9); p = 0.027) but not for side bending (p = 0.521). CONCLUSION: Real-time feedback using an inertial sensor may be valuable in the development of specific manipulative skill. Future studies investigating manipulation could consider a randomized controlled trial using inertial sensor real time feedback compared to traditional training
Sterculic Acid and Its Analogues Are Potent Inhibitors of Toxoplasma gondii
Toxoplasmosis is a serious disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii, one of the most widespread parasites in the world. Lipid metabolism is important in the intracellular stage of T. gondii. Stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD), a key enzyme for the synthesis of unsaturated fatty acid is predicted to exist in T. gondii. Sterculic acid has been shown to specifically inhibit SCD activity. Here, we examined whether sterculic acid and its methyl ester analogues exhibit anti-T. gondii effects in vitro. T. gondii-infected Vero cells were disintegrated at 36 hr because of the propagation and egress of intracellular tachyzoites. All test compounds inhibited tachyzoite propagation and egress, reducing the number of ruptured Vero cells by the parasites. Sterculic acid and the methyl esters also inhibited replication of intracellular tachyzoites in HFF cells. Among the test compounds, sterculic acid showed the most potent activity against T. gondii, with an EC(50) value of 36.2 μM, compared with EC(50) values of 248-428 μM for the methyl esters. Our study demonstrated that sterculic acid and its analogues are effective in inhibition of T. gondii growth in vitro, suggesting that these compounds or analogues targeting SCD could be effective agents for the treatment of toxoplasmosis
Progesterone ameliorates diabetic nephropathy in streptozotocin-induced diabetic Rats
BACKGROUND: Previous studies reported that 17β-estradiol may influence the progression of diabetic renal disease in females. The present study was intended to provide an insight into the specific effects of progesterone, the other female sex hormone, in the diabetic renal complications. METHODS: Adult female wistar rats were divided into four groups (n = 6/group): intact control (non-diabetic, ND), intact diabetic (D), ovariectomized diabetic (D-OVX) and ovariectomized diabetic which were treated with progesterone (D-OVX + P; 10 mg/kg, s.c, every second day) for 10 weeks. Diabetes was induced by a single dose injection of 55 mg/kg streptozotocin. Expressions of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), fibronectin, vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A), angiotensin II type 1 receptor (ATR1) and podocyte markers (nephrin and podocin) were assessed by immunohistochemistry and real-time PCR. RESULTS: The treatment of D-OVX rats with progesterone attenuated diabetic-associated increases in the urinary albumin to creatinine ratio, glomerulosclerosi and the expression of profibrotic and angiogenic factors (TGF-β, Fibronectin and VEGF-A). Furthermore, progesterone supplementation prevented diabetes-induced downregulation of nephrin and podocin while the overexpression of ATR1 in the diabetic rats was inhibited by the progesterone supplementation. CONCLUSION: These results provided evidence, for the first time, that the replacement of progesterone can ameliorate the renal damage in the experimental models of diabetic nephropathy through improving the renal function; the inhibition of renal fibrosis and abnormal angiogenesis; along with the amelioration of podocyte injury. Additionally, the blocking of renin-angiotensin system through the down-regulation of ATR1 expression may also account for the reno-protective effect of progesterone. Outcome Following Hemorrhage From Cranial Dural Arteriovenous Fistulae Analysis of the Multicenter International CONDOR Registry:Analysis of the Multicenter International CONDOR Registry
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dural arteriovenous fistulae can present with hemorrhage, but there remains a paucity of data regarding subsequent outcomes. We sought to use the CONDOR (Consortium for Dural Arteriovenous Fistula Outcomes Research), a multi-institutional registry, to characterize the morbidity and mortality of dural arteriovenous fistula-related hemorrhage.METHODS: A retrospective review of patients in CONDOR who presented with dural arteriovenous fistula-related hemorrhage was performed. Patient characteristics, clinical follow-up, and radiographic details were analyzed for associations with poor outcome (defined as modified Rankin Scale score ≥3).RESULTS: The CONDOR dataset yielded 262 patients with incident hemorrhage, with median follow-up of 1.4 years. Poor outcome was observed in 17.0% (95% CI, 12.3%-21.7%) at follow-up, including a 3.6% (95% CI, 1.3%-6.0%) mortality. Age and anticoagulant use were associated with poor outcome on multivariable analysis (odds ratio, 1.04, odds ratio, 5.1 respectively). Subtype of hemorrhage and venous shunting pattern of the lesion did not affect outcome significantly.CONCLUSIONS: Within the CONDOR registry, dural arteriovenous fistula-related hemorrhage was associated with a relatively lower morbidity and mortality than published outcomes from other arterialized cerebrovascular lesions but still at clinically consequential rates.</p

Nrf-2-dependent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects underlie the protective effect of esculeoside A against retinal damage in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats
Esculeoside A (ESA) is a tomato-derived glycoside with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The protective effect of ESA against diabetic retinopathy is not well-investigated and was the core objective of this study. In addition, we tested if such protection involves the activation of Nrf2 signaling. Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) was induced in adult Wistar male rats by an intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (65 mg/kg). Non-diabetic and T1DM rats were divided into two subgroup groups given either the vehicle or ESA (100 mg)/kg. An additional T1DM group was given ESA (100 mg/kg) and an Nrf2 inhibitor (2 mg/kg) (n=8 rats/group). Treatments continued for 12 weeks. In this study, according to the histological features, ESA improved the structure of ganglionic cells and increased the number of cells of the inner nuclear and plexiform layers in the retinas of T1DM rats. Concomitantly, it reduced the retina levels of malondialdehyde (lipid peroxides), vascular endothelial growth factor, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, Bax, and caspase-3. In the retinas of the control and diabetic rats, ESA boosted the levels of total glutathione, superoxide dismutase, heme-oxygenase-1, and Bcl2, reduced the mRNA levels of REDD1, and enhanced cytoplasmic and nuclear levels of Nrf2. However, ESA failed to alter the mRNA levels of Nrf2 and keap1, protein levels of keap1, plasma glucose, plasma insulin, serum triglycerides, cholesterol, and LDL-c in both the control and T1DM rats.
