LONG-TERM HEDGING ANALYSIS FOR SOYBEANS, 1973-95
The study analyzed a two-year hedge for soybeans in three states trying to capture high prices. The differences in prices received over a 23 year period were not significant when compared to annual hedges or cash sales.Demand and Price Analysis, Marketing,

The Two-Fluid Dynamics and Energetics of the Asymmetric Magnetic Reconnection in Laboratory and Space Plasmas
Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process in magnetized plasma where magnetic energy is converted to plasma energy. Despite huge differences in the physical size of the reconnection layer, remarkably similar characteristics are observed in both laboratory and magnetosphere plasmas. Here we present the comparative study of the dynamics and physical mechanisms governing the energy conversion in the laboratory and space plasma in the context of two-fluid physics, aided by numerical simulations. In strongly asymmetric reconnection layers with negligible guide field, the energy deposition to electrons is found to primarily occur in the electron diffusion region where electrons are demagnetized and diffuse. A large potential well is observed within the reconnection plane and ions are accelerated by the electric field toward the exhaust region. The present comparative study identifies the robust two-fluid mechanism operating in systems over six orders of magnitude in spatial scales and over a wide range of collisionality
Low-energy earth-moon mission analysis using low-thrust optimal and feedback control
This work is focused on designing a low-energy orbit transfer in the Earth-Moon system, aimed at reaching stable capture in a highly elliptical lunar orbit, with the use of low-thrust propulsion. The mission at hand includes three different phases: low-energy ballistic transfer starting from Earth, low-thrust minimum-fuel arc, and low-thrust lunar orbit insertion using variable-thrust nonlinear orbit control. First, a reference trajectory is generated in the framework of the Patched Planar Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem (PPCR3BP), leveraging invariant manifold dynamics. Trajectory propagation is performed using the Bicircular Restricted FourBody Problem (BR4BP) model. Particle swarm optimization is applied for trajectory refinement and to detect the subsequent minimum-fuel low-thrust arc. Finally, the lunar orbit is entered thanks to the use of variable-thrust nonlinear orbit control
Focusing on surgical and laser advances in glaucoma management
Introduction: Lowering the IOP remains the mainstay treatment to stop the progression of glaucoma. Different modalities can be used to achieve this including IOP lowering medications, laser, and surgeries. Nowadays, minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries and newer lasers are becoming more popular due to their safety profile, and their efficacy, allowing the patients to be less dependent on life long medications and substituting more invasive procedures as trabeculectomy, and shunt operations.
/
Areas covered: This review will go through how lasers and surgery are used to lower the IOP, and the newest techniques, and modalities used to achieve this.
/
Expert opinion: the authors of this review believe that in five years’ time lasers and minimally invasive glaucoma procedures will replace eye drops and surgeries like trabeculectomy and shunt procedures
Monitoring and mapping broadleaf mountain forests of southern Sierra de Bahoruco, Dominican Republic
One of the most important wintering regions for Bicknell’s Thrush (Catharus bicknelli) in the Dominican Republic is Bahoruco National Park, which is also a core area within the Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enriquillo Biosphere Reserve. Bahoruco’s humid, broadleaf mountain forests are one of the most critically endangered habitats on Hispaniola, not just for Bicknell’s Thrush, but for overall biodiversity. Between 2007 and 2008, Grupo Jaragua, with support from American Bird Conservancy, conducted studies on migratory birds in the broadleaf forests of the southern slopes of Sierra de Bahoruco (Dominican Republic), and identified and established a bird watching trail near the community of Los Arroyos, in the southwest corner of the Park. Because of this, we decided to explore a larger area of forest there to establish its importance for Bicknell’s Thrush and other birds, as well as to map its extent, road access and document existing threats
