A small azhdarchoid pterosaur from the latest Cretaceous, the age of flying giants
Pterosaur fossils from the Campanian–Maastrichtian of North America have been reported from the continental interior, but few have been described from the west coast. The first pterosaur from the Campanian Northumberland Formation (Nanaimo Group) of Hornby Island, British Columbia, is represented here by a humerus, dorsal vertebrae (including three fused notarial vertebrae), and other fragments. The elements have features typical of Azhdarchoidea, an identification consistent with dominance of this group in the latest Cretaceous. The new material is significant for its size and ontogenetic stage: the humerus and vertebrae indicate a wingspan of ca 1.5?m, but histological sections and bone fusions indicate the individual was approaching maturity at time of death. Pterosaurs of this size are exceedingly rare in Upper Cretaceous strata, a phenomenon commonly attributed to smaller pterosaurs becoming extinct in the Late Cretaceous as part of a reduction in pterosaur diversity and disparity. The absence of small juveniles of large species—which must have existed—in the fossil record is evidence of a preservational bias against small pterosaurs in the Late Cretaceous, and caution should be applied to any interpretation of latest Cretaceous pterosaur diversity and success
A human coronavirus responsible for the common cold massively kills dendritic cells but not monocytes
Copyright @ 2012, American Society for Microbiology.Human coronaviruses are associated with upper respiratory tract infections that occasionally spread to the lungs and other organs. Although airway epithelial cells represent an important target for infection, the respiratory epithelium is also composed of an elaborate network of dendritic cells (DCs) that are essential sentinels of the immune system, sensing pathogens and presenting foreign antigens to T lymphocytes. In this report, we show that in vitro infection by human coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E) induces massive cytopathic effects in DCs, including the formation of large syncytia and cell death within only few hours. In contrast, monocytes are much more resistant to infection and cytopathic effects despite similar expression levels of CD13, the membrane receptor for HCoV-229E. While the differentiation of monocytes into DCs in the presence of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor and interleukin-4 requires 5 days, only 24 h are sufficient for these cytokines to sensitize monocytes to cell death and cytopathic effects when infected by HCoV-229E. Cell death induced by HCoV-229E is independent of TRAIL, FasL, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and caspase activity, indicating that viral replication is directly responsible for the observed cytopathic effects. The consequence of DC death at the early stage of HCoV-229E infection may have an impact on the early control of viral dissemination and on the establishment of long-lasting immune memory, since people can be reinfected multiple times by HCoV-229E
Optical Spectroscopy of Type Ia Supernovae
We present 432 low-dispersion optical spectra of 32 Type Ia supernovae (SNe
Ia) that also have well-calibrated light curves. The coverage ranges from 6
epochs to 36 epochs of spectroscopy. Most of the data were obtained with the
1.5m Tillinghast telescope at the F. L. Whipple Observatory with typical
wavelength coverage of 3700-7400A and a resolution of ~7A. The earliest spectra
are thirteen days before B-band maximum; two-thirds of the SNe were observed
before maximum brightness. Coverage for some SNe continues almost to the
nebular phase. The consistency of the method of observation and the technique
of reduction makes this an ideal data set for studying the spectroscopic

Canada v. Khadr: Reflections on the Use of International Law in the Repatriation Litigation
The genesis for this article was anticipation of a discussion of international human rights law by the Supreme Court in its Khadr 2010 repatriation decision, given the approach taken by the two levels of the Federal Court in the analysis of the principles of fundamental justice under section 7 of the Charter. As the Supreme Court’s identification of the relevant principle of fundamental justice in Khadr 2010 makes no reference to international law, the article examines instead the implications of the Supreme Court’s analysis, in R. v. Hape, of state jurisdiction under international law, for the approaches taken by the Federal Court in the Khadr repatriation litigation. The Supreme Court’s approach in Khadr 2010 is at least not inconsistent with its Hape analysis. Its analysis of the principles governing state jurisdiction at international law supports a limited extraterritorial application of both the Charter and state parties’ obligations under international human rights treaties
The Transitional Stripped-Envelope SN 2008ax: Spectral Evolution and Evidence for Large Asphericity
Supernova (SN) 2008ax in NGC 4490 was discovered within hours after shock
breakout, presenting the rare opportunity to study a core-collapse SN beginning
with the initial envelope-cooling phase immediately following shock breakout.
We present an extensive sequence of optical and near-infrared spectra, as well
as three epochs of optical spectropolarimetry. Our initial spectra, taken two
days after shock breakout, are dominated by hydrogen Balmer lines at high
velocity. However, by maximum light, He I lines dominated the optical and
near-infrared spectra, which closely resembled those of normal Type Ib
supernovae (SNe Ib) such as SN 1999ex. This spectroscopic transition defines
Type IIb supernovae, but the strong similarity of SN 2008ax to normal SNe Ib
beginning near maximum light, including an absorption feature near 6270A due to
H-alpha at high velocities, suggests that many objects classified as SNe Ib in
the literature may have ejected similar amounts of hydrogen as SN 2008ax,
roughly a few x 0.01 M_sun. Early-time spectropolarimetry (6 and 9 days after
shock breakout) revealed strong line polarization modulations of 3.4% across
H-alpha, indicating the presence of large asphericities in the outer ejecta.
The continuum shares a common polarization angle with the hydrogen, helium, and
oxygen lines, while the calcium and iron absorptions are oriented at different
angles. This is clear evidence of deviations from axisymmetry even in the outer
ejecta. Intrinsic continuum polarization of 0.64% only nine days after shock
breakout shows that the outer layers of the ejecta were quite aspherical. A
single epoch of late-time spectropolarimetry, as well as the shapes of the
nebular line profiles, demonstrate that asphericities extended from the

Discovery and Follow-up Observations of the Young Type Ia Supernova 2016coj
The Type~Ia supernova (SN~Ia) 2016coj in NGC 4125 (redshift ) was
discovered by the Lick Observatory Supernova Search 4.9 days after the fitted
first-light time (FFLT; 11.1 days before -band maximum). Our first detection
(pre-discovery) is merely day after the FFLT, making SN 2016coj one
of the earliest known detections of a SN Ia. A spectrum was taken only 3.7 hr
after discovery (5.0 days after the FFLT) and classified as a normal SN Ia. We
performed high-quality photometry, low- and high-resolution spectroscopy, and
spectropolarimetry, finding that SN 2016coj is a spectroscopically normal SN
Ia, but with a high velocity of \ion{Si}{2} 6355 (\,\kms\
around peak brightness). The \ion{Si}{2} 6355 velocity evolution can
be well fit by a broken-power-law function for up to a month after the FFLT. SN
2016coj has a normal peak luminosity ( mag), and it
reaches a -band maximum \about16.0~d after the FFLT. We estimate there to be
low host-galaxy extinction based on the absence of Na~I~D absorption lines in
our low- and high-resolution spectra. The spectropolarimetric data exhibit weak
polarization in the continuum, but the \ion{Si}{2} line polarization is quite

SN2007ax : An Extremely Faint Type Ia Supernova
We present multi-band photometric and optical spectroscopic observations of
SN2007ax, the faintest and reddest Type Ia supernova (SNIa) yet observed. With
M_B = -15.9 and (B-V)max = 1.2, this SN is over half a magnitude fainter at
maximum light than any other SNIa. Similar to subluminous SN2005ke, SN2007ax
also appears to show excess in UV emission at late time. Traditionally,
Delta-m_15(B) has been used to parameterize the decline rate for SNeIa.
However, the B-band transition from fast to slow decline occurs sooner than 15
days for faint SNeIa. Therefore we suggest that a more physically motivated
parameter, the time of intersection of the two slopes, be used instead. Only by
explaining the faintest (and the brightest) supernovae, we can thoroughly
understand the physics of thermonuclear explosions. We suggest that future
surveys should carefully design their cadence, depth, pointings and follow-up
to find an unbiased sample of extremely faint members of this subclass of faint
